I'm not sure what he means by "better", and you might want to ask him to define it more clearly.
If you are talking about hunting whitetail deer, which is what we would do with those calibres here in upstate NY, they all seem like good choices.
My gut feeling is that the .270 will have wider ammo choices than the .280 but you would need to look into that further.
