Music Trivia:

Ok, let's get the old music trivia thread going again.
If you are a newbie, the rules are pretty simple:
Answer the question correctly, you get to ask the next question. Wait for the asker to confirm that you are correct.
A question is deemed a stumper if it is not answered correctly in a 24 hour period. At that time, the original asker gives the answer and comes up with another trivia question. Simple, eh?
I'll ask the first one:
In light of the recent mistrial of Phil Spector, What artist did a song that quotes Phils ex wife Ronnie and she actually sings the quote in the song?

Should be pretty easy!

pig 10-14-2007 01:42 PM

shit, i didn't know that's what it was about...i'm not giving the answer, because i have no appropriate trivia question, but i would like to say that i hate that guy, that song, and his crappy little slurring accent. nothing personal.

roachboy 10-14-2007 02:46 PM

i know the song title but not the "artist"---are there rules about looking stuff up?

Anxst 10-14-2007 07:35 PM

I think it's Take Me Home Tonight by Eddie Money. I'll wait for confirmation.

perripken 10-15-2007 05:12 AM

Anxst, you are correct. your turn.
Roachboy, sorry, I forgot the rule about not looking it up. thanks for your honesty. Obviously we will get googlers, but everyone is on their honor.

Lucifer 10-15-2007 05:18 AM

on their honour? where do you think you are?

perripken 10-15-2007 06:33 AM

I'm in the TFP where everyone is honorable!

Sweet, I got it right. Btw, googlers will be shot on sight!

NEW QUESTION:

This surf rock band, famous for stunts such as playing entirely in 1950's cosmonaut gear and wearing flaming TVs on their heads recently reunited for a single show at the Touch and Go records 25th anniversary concert. (They put on one hell of a show, btw.)

Who are they?

God of Thunder 10-15-2007 03:24 PM

As before, I'll help moderate. If that's alright with perripken.

This thread was a blast the last time and I kind of missed it.

This is just a guess based on the only surf rock band I know to have played at the Touch and Go concert, but I'm going to say the group in question is Man...or Astro-Man? I don't know if they did stunts like that but I certainly wouldn't put it past them.

Waiting for confirmation.

Bingo!

I was a huge fan of theirs during the 90's. Between them, Big Black, and Killdozer, I wanted to be on that record label so bad when I first formed a band.

If only I hadn't sucked.

Great job, Martian! Line up the next one.

perripken 10-16-2007 05:21 AM

Thunder... without your help the Music Trivia thread would'nt have lasted so long last time. Let's make it a hit again!

Martian, looks like it's your turn!

Martian 10-16-2007 07:39 AM

Hmm.. well, let's stick with festivals.

It's been 40 years since this festival took place in California, catapulting numerous musicians to stardom; including one particular left-handed guitarist.

Name the festival and the man.

roachboy 10-16-2007 08:16 AM

the monterey pop festival.
jimi hendrix.

pennebaker's film is one of the best...

Martian 10-16-2007 08:31 AM

Right and right, roachboy. You're up.

roachboy 10-16-2007 08:56 AM

away from festivals then.

miles davis wanted to assemble the greatest rock band in the world.
between 1969 and 1975, his bands toured rock venues, being put on strange double bills with neil young and the steve miller band at the fillmore for example.
this audience cross-over meant that miles' bands of this period were not only lovely, but were also career-making gigs for many of the band members.

name 3 of the musicians whose public careers started with miles' bands of this period (between "in a silent way" and "panagea")

perripken 10-17-2007 05:17 AM

This is a great question, I think I know one, but am totally stumped on the other two. Looks like you're only 4 hours from an official stumper, roachboy.
You would be the first stumper of the new Music Trivia era!

roachboy 10-17-2007 09:06 AM

i dont know how to figure out when the time has lapsed...
there are alot of folk---
john mclaughlin
chick corea
keith jarrett
joe zawinul (who played with cannonball adderly for a while before joining miles' electric band--but weather report came out of the miles band and so seems to owe something of its trajectory to this cross-over exposure)
colin walcott (later of oregon)

let's try again then.

hip hop question:

who coined the expression "turntablist"?

This one I know. It was DJ Supreme, if I remember correctly. Funny thing was, he planned on coming up with another name for it, but this one stuck.

I'm off to work, but if correct I'll have another question ready when I get home.

perripken 10-18-2007 06:33 AM

Roachboy, up above your name and avatar there should be a time stamp.
Chick Corea was the one I knew. Great question. Is Anxst correct? I'm not much of a hip hop guy.

roachboy 10-18-2007 09:20 AM

i was thinking q-bert, who coined the expression in the mid 1990s to differentiate more underground, skill-heavy dj practices from what has become mainstream. right about the time that copyright-infringement-suit happy people were driving dj practices underground. if mainstream hip-hop blows now, these lawsuits are a big reason why. go american copyright law!

here's an easy one.
cream had a huge hit with "spoonful"
its also been covered by every blues-influenced artist in the universe--my favorite version is by koko taylor.
who wrote the song?

Martian 10-18-2007 11:20 AM

I've been reading up on bassists lately, and thus I know that Spoonful was actually written by the one and only Willie Dixon.

Let's get a little more modern now.

Although he's best known for his bass skills, this man originally started out playing trumpet and had no ambitions whatsoever to join a rock band. He still plays the horn regularly now, and has appeared blowing his horn on albums for Jane's Addiction and the Mars Volta, among others.

Who the hell am I talking about?

The_Jazz 10-18-2007 11:36 AM

Flea? I know he's played trumpet with Jane's and Mars Volta at times.

Anxst 10-18-2007 03:12 PM

Since I was sure I had it right, I took the liberty of doing some research. Check it:

So, it looks like no one really knows. Oh well, at least I took a good stab at it. Great question!

Yeah, the man in question is one Michael Balzry, aka Flea.

The_Jazz 10-19-2007 04:01 PM

Wow, I'm a little surprised to be right. I figured it couldn't be that obvious - and I mean that in the least snobby way possible.

OK, after Sugar broke up, Bob Mould released a solo album and then quit the music industry to work for who? The company or the industry is acceptable.

Bob went on to work as a Pro Wrestling scriptwriter, I forget whom for. WCW, maybe?

Husker Du, where are you?

I'll wait for confirmation in case I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure.

The_Jazz 10-20-2007 09:29 AM

Got the industry and company. You're up.

Anxst 10-20-2007 11:09 AM

I'll continue with the "Who am I?" line of questions. I like that format.

Having lost a lung in the Korean war, I found myself unable to sing, so I focused on guitar playing. I recorded the only instrumental song to be banned from airplay on American radio during the 50's, and punched holes in the speakers of my amp doing it so it sounded more like the live version.

Who am I? (Bonus meaningless internet points if you can name the song.)

perripken 10-21-2007 03:19 PM

Anxst, this is officially a stumper. Man... I remember hearing about the punch the hole in the speaker thing and I know when you say it I'm gonna keel over.

Wow, I didn't think this would stump anyone.

It's Link Wray (and his Wray Men). The song was Rumble.

Okay, new question:

Originally formed as a fill in punk act at the First International UK Punk Festival, this band had Simon Ritchie (later known as Sid Vicious) as their drummer. Later, after a drastic sound and lineup change, they went on to influence bands such as Tricky and Garbage. Robert Smith (of the cure) even spent 2 or 3 years in the group in the early 80's.

Who are they?

pan6467 10-21-2007 09:08 PM

Siouxsie & the Banshees.......... great band and wonder voice in Siouxsie Sioux.

One of the better "underground" groups (Smiths, Dead Kennedys, Pogues, Psych Furs, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure, the Cult, Lords of the New Church, Violent Femmes, etc) of the 80's. My best friend in high school lived for that type of rock, he even named his cat Morrisey. I was 60's and 80's pop rock. I didn't appreciate that music until later in the 90's.

I agree on all counts, Pan, except I was into them in the 80's when I was growing up.

You're up!

pan6467 10-22-2007 09:52 PM

Cool.....

very simple one.....

In the 70's a solo act (female) sang a song rumored to be about another very popular singer (male).....

OR

in the 70's a famed group sang about a famed female artist, rumor says...

Both songs were among each's biggest hits and appears on their respective greatest hits album.

name either song and the act singing or the person the song was about

extra points if you guess both.

God of Thunder 10-23-2007 03:14 AM

The first one you're talking about is Carly Simon's "You're So Vain", but even she hasn't told who it is about. Rumors have been told that is was about everyone from James Taylor, to Mick Jagger to Warren Beatty.

As for the second one, A group singing about a girl... You're gonna have to get more specific :D

My guess is KISS singing "Plaster Caster", even though it does not appear on any of their greatest hits packages.

I was going to say Marianne Faithful with "why d'ya do it?" But i suspect it wasn't a greatest hit... although I believe the tune was written about Mick Jagger.

I'm pretty sure you're right on this one Thunder... I saw an interview once when Carly was asked about it, and she kinda smirked when the interviewer mentioned James Taylor, but she wouldn't disclose who it was about. Pan, I'm dying to know the other one!

The_Jazz 10-23-2007 07:32 AM

Hmmmm, I'd always heard "You're So Vain" was about Barry Manilow....

Maybe its just like DB Cooper's true identity - better left unanswered.

pan6467 10-23-2007 07:40 AM

Yes, "You're So Vain" was the one by the female artist. Perri is right she never came out and claimed it but she has hinted in interviews.

Witchy Woman by the Eagles had a similar rumor.... being about Stevie Nicks This was false, however, there were rumors at the time that Witchy Woman was released, the song was about Linda Rondstadt.

God of Thunder 10-23-2007 08:43 AM

Now that you mention it, I have the rumors about "Witchy Woman". The story about Linda Rondstadt makes sense since they were her backup band at one point.

Ohhhhh Lets see... Hmmm...

Do I go easy, or come out with a stumper?

Let's continue on with "Songs About Chicks" for $200 Alex,

Who was the Derek & The Domino's hit "Layla" written about and name at least one other song written about her for bonus points.

Layla was written about one Pattie Boyd, who was George Harrison's wife. Patti later left George for Eric, either leaving George devestated or shrugging his shoulders, depending on who you talk to. Either way, he attended Eric and Pattie's wedding; that joyous union lasted for about a year, if I recall correctly.

Wonderful Tonight is (I think) also about her.

For the record, my cat is named Layla.

Let's follow another theme, now. What incident occasioned Bono of U2 writing The Sweetest Thing?

Leto 10-23-2007 12:37 PM

this was written for George Harrison's wife at the time (Patty?). George and Eric were friends, but Eric fell in love with George's wife. He even threatened to take drugs (coke?) if (I'm sure it's Patty) didn't go home with him instead of George.

As to another song... (desparately trying to remember the special I watched a couple of weeks ago on this..) I'll have to ponder a bit. I was thinking that George may have written "Something" for her.

Pretty sure he wrote it for his wife, as he forgot her Birthday.

I have one of the wrappers from the chocolate bars they gave away when the single was first released.

This is the correct answer. Bono forgot Ali's birthday during the recording of The Joshua Tree and wrote The Sweetest Thing in a shameless bid for forgiveness. The video contains several instances of the words 'I'm sorry,' as well as the Chippendale dancers, and all proceeds from the single went to Ali's favourite charity.

Your question, sir.

Anxst 10-24-2007 05:32 PM

This popular 70's band, named for a sex toy in "Naked Lunch", featured Chevy Chase on drums in an early incarnation.

Who are they?

pan6467 10-26-2007 09:59 AM

It's been 24 hours and we need a kick start.....

This band was a somewhat slow growing band that became big recording The Byrds throw aways (discards or rejected music).

Leto 10-26-2007 10:13 AM

Moody Blues? CSN?

roachboy 10-26-2007 10:21 AM

flying burrito brothers?
long ryders and all other "neoamericana" bands of the middle 1980s (green on red, giant sand...)?

God of Thunder 10-26-2007 12:24 PM

My guess is The Hollies

Leto 10-27-2007 03:54 AM

I'm stickin with CSN

pan6467 10-27-2007 08:23 AM

Nope...... this band was a SLOW moving band who's 2 frontmen played with Zappa in Mothers of Invention.

dub question then.

mad professor is one of the cooler dub producers out there.
his record label---ariwa----puts out two kinds of music: dub and what?
another way: mad professor acts a producer in two forms of reggae--one is dub. what is the other?

Anxst 10-28-2007 05:15 PM

I'm totally guessing, since I don't even know the label...Roots Reggae?

Leto 10-29-2007 02:39 AM

ska?

roachboy 10-30-2007 05:44 AM

lover's rock.

another one then:

he was the singer for the german band can over 4 albums in the middle 1970s.
the fall did a song about him.
when he tours these days, he accumulates "sound carriers" from each city to do shows with him.
who is he?

martian: the association between mad professor and lover's rock is curious.
you have to get over somehow.

the singer is damo suzuki.

someone else should post a question....

God of Thunder 11-02-2007 06:41 AM

I'll take the torch and run with it.

Let's go north of the border, for $200.

Barenaked Ladies did a cover of "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" early in their career, but it never appeared on a BNL record until "Greatest Hits: Volume 1"

Which Canadian did the original song, and for bonus points name the tribute album BNL originally did it for.

Martian 11-02-2007 06:45 AM

The original singer is Bruce Cockburn. I have no idea re: the tribute album, so no bonus points for me.

God of Thunder 11-02-2007 08:33 AM

The tribute album was "Kick At The Darkness: A Tribute to Bruce Cockburn"

The title come from a line in the song "Lovers in a Dangerous Time"

You're up Martian

Leto 11-02-2007 09:01 AM

The BNL version had a good video too... Driving in a pickup, singing, through the streets of Scarborough...

Martian 11-02-2007 10:05 AM

Whoops, I hadn't thought up a new question. Well, let's see here...

Over in the Found on the Net forum, there's a video of Tom Waits in an interview. Tom has had quite a career, including several feuds with different companies for attempting to use his, er, colourful music for marketing purposes. One particular example was interesting, because it involved a song that was, itself, an attack on advertising.

Name the song and the company who tried to use it.

mixedmedia 11-02-2007 11:09 AM

Finally, one I know.

That, I believe (he's filed and won a few) would be Frito Lay's (almost) use of the song 'Step Right Up.'

Off of the album, Small Change, if that gives me a bonus. :p

What/who are the Horns of Dilemma?

perripken 11-02-2007 08:33 PM

ohh...ohhh... They would be the horn section for the Violent Femmes, correct? I believe the sax player, his name escapes me, either toured or was a session player for pink floyd. Correct?

mixedmedia 11-02-2007 08:50 PM

Correctamundo!

And you are right one of the stand-ins was a session player for Pink Floyd, but I don't recall his name, either.

perripken 11-04-2007 07:30 PM

Hi all,
I'm so sorry I let the time lapse so long on this! I'm at a very busy point in my life! Anyways... I think I might have asked this question on the old board, but here goes:

This singer was the frontman for the band Squeeze and Mike and the Mechanics. Name him!

pan6467 11-04-2007 11:36 PM

You did ask before it's Paul Carrack (an aside: I know he sang their biggest hit "Living Years but did he sing "All I Need...." or did Paul Young?)

perripken 11-05-2007 05:31 AM

Not sure Pan... you're question, sir!

pan6467 11-05-2007 10:19 AM

Ray Davies is coming out with his second solo album so this maybe a good promo question....

What VH1 show was developed by his late 90's stage appearances?

perripken 11-06-2007 07:11 AM

I'm going to take a wild guess, I no longer have cable so I'm not up to date on VH1- "Behind the Music" ?

God of Thunder 11-06-2007 07:54 AM

Very good guess and accurate.

When his "Unauthorized" Autobiography came out he went on a book signing tour that eventually became "Ray Davies Storyteller/20th Century Man". That led to him doing a shortened version on VH1 and the show "Storytellers" was born.

I'll lob a softball out to try and capture some new blood to the thread.

Alright, everyone. Hands on buzzers...

Renowned film composer Danny Elfman founded what band with his brother in 1972?

Martian 11-07-2007 09:58 AM

What, nobody but GoT and I know that Danny Elfman was a founding member of Oingo Boingo?

I'll wait for confirmation, even though I'm almost entirely certain I'm correct. I need to come up with a new question anyway.

mixedmedia 11-07-2007 10:11 AM

Well, I knew it, but I thought we were waiting on someone new to come along. :shy:

God of Thunder 11-07-2007 10:40 AM

Yes Martian, you are correct. Danny and his brother founded "The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo", later shortened to just Oingo Boingo

Looks like we had no new takers MM  Oh well, jump in next time.

Leto 11-07-2007 12:47 PM

well, i looked at the Q, and didn't know the name, so I'm new, but dumb.

God of Thunder 11-07-2007 02:14 PM

Keep looking in this thread Leto, you'll find something you can answer.

Martian 11-07-2007 03:14 PM

Oh, I hadn't realized we were trying to draw some fresh blood in. Very well, I throw another easy one out there.

Tom Morello is widely known for his innovative guitar techniques, used to good effect in both Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. However, he also writes acoustic folk songs. He does so under what alias?

God of Thunder 11-07-2007 03:18 PM

It's all good Martian. New blood is welcome anytime.

Truth be told, I threw out a softball question because it was the only thing I could think of at the time.

The Night Watchman?

*ahem*

I mean, that is correct. He actually spells it all as one word, but there's just no way I'm going to be that much of a pedant.

Your question, sir.

cj2112 11-07-2007 03:39 PM

Who was the punk rocker who ran for Governor against Arnold Shwarzenegger?

Anxst 11-07-2007 06:29 PM

Jello Biafra?

Sounds like something he would do...and I would have voted for him. Total guess, though.
