The Tragically Hip told Bill Barilko's story in the song Fifty Mission Cap.

perripken 12-04-2007 09:56 AM

Martian, I'm going to interject here and say go ahead and ask a new question.

Leto 12-04-2007 11:06 AM

oh shit! sorry guys... I forgot the process. yes Martian you are right.

perripken 12-05-2007 08:42 AM

Dat's otay Leto, we're all human, I think?

Martian 12-05-2007 09:13 AM

Hey, whoops. I forgot too, apparently.

Right. How about a holiday-themed question?

What famous singer, inextricably linked with the Christmas season in the minds of many, has been dogged posthumously of reports of child abuse ever since his death in 1977?

mixedmedia 12-05-2007 09:53 AM

Would that be Bing Crosby?

Martian 12-05-2007 09:56 AM

That's the guy. It's an easy one, I know, but I reckon that'll do to get things moving again.

Your question, my dear.

mixedmedia 12-05-2007 10:36 AM

Well, this one's probably easy, too...

Which Bob Dylan song, titled after an article of clothing, has been speculated (among others) to have been written about Edie Sedgwick.

*extra bit* the song is good for stripping, too

cereal 12-05-2007 10:38 AM

Might it be Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat off of Blond on Blond?

mixedmedia 12-05-2007 11:23 AM

That it might!

And you're new here, too. Awesome. :)

Welcome. It's your question.

cereal 12-05-2007 11:53 AM

Thanks for the warm welcome. Here's my first question.

What artist was forced to bring a guitar to the witness stand to prove the difference between two songs that he/she had written?

Leto 12-05-2007 12:25 PM

I'll go with George Harrison.

cereal 12-05-2007 01:32 PM

Try the other side of the ocean.

Anxst 12-05-2007 03:39 PM

I think it was John Fogerty, when his Ex-CCR mates tried to sue him for The Old Man Down the Road being the same as Run Through the Jungle.

You are 100% correct, and might I add that is one very comprehensive answer. You even got the songs correct.

mixedmedia 12-05-2007 03:55 PM

aw man, why didn't I think of that? I knew that...damn

perripken 12-05-2007 04:11 PM

Actually, a little clarification, Fogarty was sued by his former manager Saul Zaentz. He was also sued because Fogarty wrote a song called Vanz can't dance which was actually about Zaentz and all his corrupt dealings with CCR.
The chorus in the song was "Vanz can't dance but he'll steal your money, watch him or he'll rob you blind" John changed the Z to a V so that Zaentz couldn't prove he was singing about him.

Wow, I thought it was his bandmates. Good to know!

Question time:

This band, originally called Chad Allen and The Reflections, was the first Canadian band to have a number 1 hit in the US. They later had it's members break off to form a new band called Brave Belt, until that band also changed it's name.

What were the final (and well known) names of those 2 bands?

cereal 12-05-2007 06:04 PM

The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive

What seminal 80's album contains the real moans of a woman, mid-coitus, in its closing track?

duran duran - hungry like a wolf? or is that the song...

That's the song. I think the album was Rio. But that's not it, unless you consider Simon le Bon to be a girl.

You are correct. Apparently Axl Rose had sex with Steven Adler's (drummer at the time) girlfriend so he could record her moans for "Rocket Queen". The next question is yours.

perripken 12-06-2007 01:11 PM

Nice question, Axl's such a douchebag

Punk.of.Ages 12-06-2007 01:29 PM

Axl's the biggest sell-out known to man.

Next question's in the punk category. An easy one if you know the scene:
Keith Morris is currently the lead singer for The Circle Jerks, but what other well known punk band did he co-found and sing for before The Circle Jerks.

I think I am supposed to post the answer now. It was "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. And here's my next question. What blues artist reportedly sold his soul to the devil in return for his musical prowess?

Robert Johnson, right?

Well, Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle is correct.

Martian, if you want the next question go for it!

Martian 12-10-2007 09:18 AM

Hmm.

How did Lucille, BB King's famous guitar, earn her name?

God of Thunder 12-10-2007 09:44 AM

I love this story...

He was playing some backwoods joint somewhere in his early days. The place was one of those kind with burning barrel in the middle of the dance floor to provide heat. During his set, two men got in a fight and knocked over the barrel, setting fire to the place.

In his haste to leave the burning bar, he realized he forgot his guitar, so he went back in to get it. He later learned the two men were fighting over a girl named Lucille.

He named his guitar after her, not to remind him of her, but to never do anything as stupid as run into a burning building again.

Side story... I was visiting the "Hard Rock Cafe" in Toronto many years back and the first thing I saw upon entering the bar was one of the many guitars lucky enough to be named "Lucille". I turned to my wife and said "Well I've seen enough, lets go" We stayed of course, but just seeing her was a thrill.

Anyway, back to trivia.

Who did Axl Rose write "Sweet Child O' Mine" for?

Bonus points if you can name her dad.

mixedmedia 12-10-2007 10:19 AM

well, I know she was his on-again, off-again girlfriend...and that she is the daughter of...someone...but I can't remember who, lol

nor have I ever known her name...

she's in the video, though! :p

In that genre....

When Rick Nelson went to his "Garden Party" who hid in Dylan's shoes"?

Here goes:
This guitar player started Humble Pie with the late Steve Marriot and went on to have a fairly successful solo career in the late mid to late 70's. His live album is considered one of the best live albums ever.
(Man... am I showing my age? It seems like just yesterday!)

mixedmedia 12-11-2007 04:36 PM

Peter Frampton.

perripken 12-11-2007 04:56 PM

Correct mixedmedia, you're up!

mixedmedia 12-11-2007 06:19 PM

Well, here's an easy one...just 'cause I happen to be listening to these gentlemen tonight...

One R&B hit single of the 1970's, according to urban legend, featured a scream effect that was reported to be the scream of a woman being stabbed, like, right there in the studio.

Gee, what a bunch of gullible kids will believe, eh? :shy:

Anyways, name the group and the hit single.

Martian 12-11-2007 06:28 PM

That was Love Rollercoaster, by the Ohio Players.

mixedmedia 12-11-2007 06:33 PM

Yez, it was indeed.

You're up, Martian.

Martian 12-11-2007 06:42 PM

'Nother easy one, then.

Who famously screamed 'I've got blisters on my fingers!' and what prompted the outburst?

cereal 12-12-2007 02:00 AM

cereal 12-12-2007 09:20 PM

What album begins with the words "we came in", and ends with the words "Isn't this where"?

perripken 12-15-2007 04:14 AM

Pink Floyd- "The Wall"
I'm positive about this, so I'll ask a new one and stay with some fairly easy Floyd trivia.
Who is the only member that is on every album?

jewels 12-15-2007 05:45 AM

It had to be Nick Mason.

Who was drummer for both King Crimson and Yes?

God of Thunder 12-15-2007 07:13 AM

That would be Bill Bruford

jewels 12-15-2007 09:44 AM

Yep. You're up.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have seen Billy Joel twice, and while he is a great performer, Liberty does not get near the credit he deserves.

pan6467 12-16-2007 01:00 AM

Yes Liberty made Billy Joel, because before Liberty came on ...(evil grin)... Billy was kind of floundering.

During Turnstiles, Billy met Liberty and asked him to play drums. Billy pretty much just had session players and no true band.

Liberty said ok, but he was in a band and felt guilty leaving the guys.

Who were "the guys"?

perripken 12-16-2007 04:04 AM

I googled! Had no idea. Sorry... never heard of the band he was in.

Unicase 12-16-2007 08:15 AM

SUPA - Supa's Jamboree is the only thing I could come up with.

pan6467 12-16-2007 10:44 PM

The band was Topper..... it featured "the guys" who later became Billy's band

Doug Stegmeyer on bass, Russell Javors on guitar, Richie Cannata on sax.

I guess that was a misleading question, people thinking I meant a group maybe.... I'm sorry.

Someone else go ahead..... give it a shot.

perripken 12-20-2007 10:26 AM

OK, let's get this thing going again!
In memory of Dan Fogelberg who just passed away:
Name the album that he and Tim Weisberg recorded together. No googling please- This was a great album and someone out there should know it!

R.I.P. Dan Fogelberg

roachboy 12-20-2007 11:19 AM

this pains me.
i can see the cover of that record.

but i always hated dan fogelberg's music, every last second of it, and so i guess i feared the possibility that the record could at some potential moment be taken out of the dust jacket and, worse, far far worse, played, with the result that i have repressed the title. perhaps dan fogelberg is a Persecuting Other. so that means that there is some paranoid relationship between myself and his photograph on record covers. if this was really done with, i wouldn't be able to recognise the cause of my repression as a former paranoid relation to the photograph of dan fogelberg on a record cover because that relation would have become indifferent to me and so its meanings would have dropped away and so i wouldnt be able to use anything about my former paranoid relation to photographs of dan fogelberg on record covers to connect anything to anything else so that means that i must still be beholden to the paranoid circuit i once constructed around the photograph on record covers of dan fogelberg.

that means it can still hurt me.

now if the pattern holds, this should result in an extended period of repetitive activity.
if i post this 6 times, assume things have taken a dive.

mixedmedia 12-20-2007 11:31 AM

I was wondering what to get you for Christmas. :D

perripken 12-21-2007 06:31 PM

Man Roachboy... I'm sorry you hated Fogelberg. You're missing out on some seriously great music! Anyways, due to the lack of answers, maybe I'm the only Fogelberg fan in here which makes me sad! I would've thought that maybe God of Thunder or Pan... would have chimed in on this one. The answer is: Twin sons of different mothers! And with that, my tail is between my legs and I will hand the forum over to someone else!

Punk.of.Ages 12-28-2007 11:42 AM

It's been a week. What happened. I'll get it going again. Who did the infamous guitar Jimi Hendrix burned on stage belong to?

perripken 01-01-2008 11:15 AM

I'll take a wild guess just to get this thing going again:
Jimmy Page?

roachboy 01-01-2008 12:15 PM

wait--which hendrix performance are you referring to?
on film? monterrey? woodstock?
didnt he burn alot of guitars?
anyway.

i'd guess that the guitar belonged to pete townsend at monterrey...no idea about woodstock.

Punk.of.Ages 01-02-2008 01:57 PM

Sorry I didn't specify I was speaking of the monterey one. And yes It was Pete's.

roachboy 01-02-2008 02:16 PM

huh...well, in that case, who directed monterey pop?

bonus:
which performers made their american debuts at that festival?

perripken 01-19-2008 04:11 AM

Well... I guess this is a stumper Roachboy, give us the answer and a new question, or pass to a new player.
Thanks

Martian 01-19-2008 10:41 AM

It is not a stumper, I just haven't been paying attention.

Monterey was directed by Lou Adler and John Phillips, and it launched the American career of The Who (who were already established in the UK) and Jimi Hendrix (same).

For a new question, what was the inspiration of the Pearl Jam song Jeremy?

roachboy 01-19-2008 11:54 AM

i forgot about this too.

d.a. pennebaker directed the film. i think adler and philips produced it, but pennebaker was definitely the director.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064689/
it was the us big-time debut for janis joplin and jimi hendrix. and the who. and ravi shankar, for that matter.

anyway, i'm about to fade out for a bit, so back to martian's question

I can only assume through lyrics that it is based on a story about a boy (named Jeremy?) who brought a gun to class and shot himself.

Aha, my mistake. I thought you meant the festival itself, rather than the film based on it.

Can you be more specific?

ironpham 01-21-2008 05:24 AM

Not without taking it to google/wikipedia.

Martian 01-21-2008 05:40 AM

Eh. Whatever, then.

Jeremy is based on the true story of a young man from Texas (15, IIRC) unsurprisingly named Jeremy. As is depicted both through the song's lyrics and in the video, Jeremy decided to bring a gun into class one day. He was asked by his teacher to get a late slip from the office, but instead went and got a handgun, which he used to shoot himself in the mouth in front of the class.

Vedder read the story in the newspaper, and has said what really struck him was that this kid had used the gun to try to make a statement, but he ultimately ended up getting a single paragraph. Vedder stated that the better revenge was to live on and be stronger than whatever was causing you to think that way.

So it's sort of anti-suicide. Anyway, your question.

ironpham 01-21-2008 08:10 AM

Here's an easy one.

What is unique about the string instrument setup of the band the Presidents of the United States of America?

Martian 01-21-2008 08:18 AM

That is and easy one.

I don't remember who plays what, but rather than the traditional arrangement of one guitar and one bass, the Presidents have one guitbass and one basitar. I'm not sure if I spelt those right. Anyway, they're guitars with the first x strings replaced with bass strings.

ironpham 01-21-2008 09:43 AM

Chris Ballew plays the basitar and Andrew McKeag plays the guitbass. The basitar only has the A and D strings, while the guitbass only has the A, D and G strings.

I guess back to you Martian.

Martian 01-21-2008 09:53 AM

Okay.

How did the Guess Who get their name?

Leto 01-21-2008 10:36 AM

I think that's an easy one. Wasn't it a marketing ploy by their label? I don't think that it was their original name. One of my fav tunes by them is "These Eyes"...
