Dialated Peoples?

anyone?

I say run with it Stick, thread been dead for a while now. |
OK, I will probably not be able to ever answer any of these questions (some fo them are real killers) so this may be my only chance.
What is the claim to fame of the Dire Straits album Brothers in Arms? |
Sting did backing vocals on Money for Nothing. Same song had what may well have been the first computer animated video.
The title cut was featured in the West Wing. Well, those are both right, but Google tells me that's not what you're looking for. So somebody else. |
First digitally recorded album.
|
Tully Mars. It was the first album fully recorded digitally.
There are also a couple of other distinctions that go along with that, can you get them? |
Quote:
Wasn't it the first CD? Other then that I'd have to google it. I know "Money for Nothing" was one of if not the most played video on MTV for a a long time. |
Quote:
If I'm right, I bequeath the question to Tully Mars, who priovided the mental jolt necessary to bring all this crap to the surface anyway. |
Martian is correct. It was the first album to outsell its LP equivalent.
It was also the first album to sell 1,000,000 in CD format. Martian says Tully Mars goes next. |
Alright! The best thread on TFP is awake again!
|
Hey Martian, thanks but looks like you got (and I can't think of anything off the top of my head) so why do you take the honors?
|
Alright.
Yngwie Malmsteen modifies his guitars in a particular way that makes it difficult or impossible for anyone other than him to play them. He claims that these modifications give him greater control over the sound and pitch of the instrument. What does he do? |
I have no idea, but I'll take a stab in the dark here.
I'm gonna guess he puts the strings on out of the standard EBGDAE order. |
Quote:
Rules say that questions stay up for 24 hours. Since nobody seems to know, I'll give up the answer. Yngwie scallops his fretboard. Thus, when he pushes down on a sting he doesn't push it all the way down to the wood. If a player used to a regular guitar tried to play on one of his, they would find it very difficult to play in tune. 'Nother question, this one in honour of the late, great Jeff Healey. Mr. Healey was known for a distinctive technique of his own that he used when playing guitar. What was it? Bonus points if you can tell me why he played that way. |
I've only ever seen Jeff Healy in videos and I don't know much about the guy. He plays his guitar with it laying in his lap and he doesn't hold the frets, he runs his hand across the board (if that makes any sense).
As fas as why he plays that way, I don't know for sure but I'll take yet another stab in the dark and guess that he's blind, and that ways easier for him. |

Your question. |
Quote:
My question: There are two bands that are believed to be side projects of Green Day. Billy Joe disclaims any involvement with one, and the other is a fairly new band and it is unconfirmed as to whether it is them or not, but the similarities are almost undeniable. Name either of these bands. Bonus if you name both. |
I know the new project (free online downloads ftw!), but I'm not going to post it yet, since I think it would be cool if this game was more than just me and Punk.of.Ages..
I will say that even though the band haven't actually claimed it per se, it's pretty frickin' obvious. A little bit of reverb doesn't mask Billy Joe's voice all that well. If they'd put Mike on vocals they may have been able to pass it off as something new (assuming they actually wanted to). |
Yeah, I think we're the only music heads on right now Martian.
Yeah, there's no way it's not Green Day in the case of either band. The one they disclaim was a new wave band though. I'd disclaim a horrible decision like that too.:p I actually really enjoy the new side project, though. |
Quote:
I was not aware that Green Day had a new wave project. This may be because I generally avoid new wave on principle. I wonder if they'll try to disown the new one too? |
Yeah, you can only sing so many songs about hating Bush (yeah a punk rocker said it.)
The new stuff has a real whimsical, fun loving, poppy feel to it that is enjoyable. I hope they don't disclaim it later, it's definitely something to be owned. |
I've decided that I'm going to answer this one, because I want to start a thread.
The new side project that is probably Green Day even though they haven't come right out and said so is the Foxboro Hot Tubs. Their big hit so far has been Mother Mary, but depending on how much longer Green Day can maintain plausible deniability, I would suspect that there's a few more to come. Next question is a toss-up. Come on, folks, join in the fun! |
Ok here's an easy one:
What rocker currently plays "Lucky" on "King of the Hill?" |
Way easy.
Tom Petty. |
Quote:
Your move Jazz. |
I'm on the road for a bunch of the next few days, so I may not be able to be back to confirm this. I'll make it easy, and if you're sure of the answer, just go ahead and ask the next question.
Who wrote Patsy Cline's hit "Crazy"? |
Quote:
Willie Nelson? |
Yep. And you're up Senor Mars.
|
Quote:
When Tom Petty was 11 years old who did he meet in Ocala, Fl.? Hint he claims meeting this person changed his life. |
Jesus?
|
Dude, don't be stupid. Everyone knows Jesus has never been to Florida. That's totally the wrong king.
I believe it may have been Elvis. |
You forget one very important detail. He was 11. I think we still have the wrong king.
Michael Jackson |

Quote:
Elvis is correct your move Martian. |
Bump
Martian? Your move....
|
Oh, whoops! Sorry.
Before being known as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fogerty et al went by two other names. Name one, or both for bonus points. |
Quote:
|
The names in question are the Golliwogs (which I personally think is a great name) and Tommy and the Blue Velvets.
Different question? How about this one? Who did Dimebag Darrell cite as his hero and biggest influence? |
Eddie Van Halen

Hint: he had this individual tattooed prominently on his chest. |
God of Thunder, I've lost a little bit of my faith in you because of this.
The answer is he of the silver face paint, Ace Frehley. Gimme: Name the first and last names of all four members of CSNY. |
David Crosby
Stephen Stills Graham Nash Neil Young |
Your move.
|
Well, sticking with Graham Nash, what art form other than music is he known for?
|
Dammit!
I know this one too. I will leave it for now, however, in the interest of letting someone else get in on things. |

What Saturday Night Live actor worked part time as a graphic artist and designed Crosby Sills and Nash's logo?
|
That would be the late, great Phil Hartman.
He also designed the cover for Steely Dan's "Aja" |
You got it God.
You're up |
Sticking with supergroups
HSAS was formed in the 80's for one album. Name all four members. |
Quote:
Oh, yeah as to the question: Think it was Hagar, Schon, Aaronson and Shrievers? |
Quote:
Close enough though, you're up. |
What 50's, 60's and 70's, mostly gospel, musical icon released a metal album in the 90's covering such bands as Judas Priest, AC/DC and Guns and Roses?
|
That, sir, would be Mr. Pat Boone.
|
Correct sir, you're up.
|
What guitar legend who died at an early age allegedly sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his skills?
|
robert johnson

|
rb - I surrender the question to you.
|
the hard question: who did this version of that old robert palmer song? the easier question: what is their other, better-known band name? |
That's clearly Kim Gordon, so I'm going with Sonic Youth as the band. As to any other names they were known by, that's beyond me.
|
well, that's clearly half of it.
the side project was called ciccone youth. for madonna. your ball, sir. |
Interesting. Let's do a six-degrees thing here.
Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore directed a video for a track off the debut album of what well-known indie band? |
I wish I could participate more but so many of these questions are way beyond me.
|
I keep forgetting to update the question when no one gets it. The band is Pavement.
What highly influential Irish punk band released the first independent album to chart in the UK? |
The Pogues?

yikes.
"to hell with poverty we'll get drunk on cheap wine.." i've long had a weakness for that couplet. which group (most active during roughly the same period as stiff little fingers) did the song? |
Oooh, one I know, and I'm in time to answer!
That would be Gang of Four. |
yay!
your question. |
Jenny Lewis, lead singer of Rilo Kiley, was originally a child actor on what TV show?
For bonus points, what movie, starring Sir Frederick of Savage, did she also appear in? |
Was the TV show Charles in Charge?
|
Quote:
Since we're past the 24 hours, I'll give it up. The TV show was Life With Lucy. The movie was The Wizard. Damn, new question. What famous guitar shredder began his professional music career as Frank Zappa's music transcriptionist? |
Well, I'll take a wild guess and say...Steve Vai?
|
i think your right mixed. unless my friends dad is lying about being zappas old friend and roadie, or was misinformed.
|
Quote:

Mixed is right. Sorry I took so long to get back.
You're up, bucko! |
Thanks!
What well-known Republican political strategist has played back-up guitar for such soul and blues greats as Percy Sledge and B.B. King? |

This guy's from the south. |
Yez...you're just one letter away from victory.

Hugely random guess here. I'm not very knowledgeable about US politics and couldn't pick a Republican strategist out of a line-up. |

Wow, go figure. My other option was Wes Atwater.
How about this, then: The Streets song Fit But You Know It (currently featured in my signature) is rumoured to be about an early 200x pop starlet from what group? Bonus points for her name, but given how fast this lot came and went I'll be happy with just the group. |
Dammit, I heard about this. I know it's another Simon Fuller group, but I'll be damned if I can remember the band, or the girl.
|
bah the streets are great, im actually listening the "the irony of it all" right now.
too bad the answer for this totally eludes me....damnit man. |
The only Fuller group I know is the Spice Girls, doubt that who you're looking for.
|
Quote:
Hint Spoiler: They were the first (and so far as I know, only) Fuller group to get their own television show. |
I have no friggin' clue who Simon Fuller is. And I like it that way. :p
|

The group was S Club, and the particular girl described by the Streets as "an eight or a nine, maybe even nine and a half in four beers' time" was one Rachel Stevens. New, easier question: What popular Red Hot Chili Peppers song details an attempt by Anthony Kiedis to score some heroin? |
Under the Bridge?
|
Damn it, MM. I knew that one!
|
doh :shy:
|
No prize for second place, Jazz man.
Take it, mixedmedia. |
