Tully Mars 09-29-2009 02:02 PM

Pigpen. Can't think of his real name.

Tophat665 09-29-2009 03:03 PM

Correct! Real name Ron McKernan. Take it away Tully.

Tully Mars 09-30-2009 02:30 AM

Ok, where did Radiohead play it's first gig?

Tully Mars 10-01-2009 03:01 AM

No one?

Clue- tavern that lunched a few bands back in the 90's.

mixedmedia 10-01-2009 03:24 AM

I'm a big radiohead fan, but it's limited mostly to the music...I don't know much about their history and all that...

Tully Mars 10-03-2009 03:11 AM

Ok, times up The Jericho Tavern, Oxford.

Ok, lets try this again...

What Detroit rocker co-wrote The Eagles #1 hit "Heartache Tonight?"

jewels 10-03-2009 04:08 AM

It doesn't sound Henley to me so I've got to guess Glenn Frey?

mixedmedia 10-03-2009 05:40 AM

Would that be Bob Seger?

Tully Mars 10-03-2009 06:38 AM

That would be Bob Seger.

Yer up.

mixedmedia 10-03-2009 07:36 AM

Thanks!

Which 1970's-80's punk/post-punk outfit used to open their own shows as a satirical Christian soft-rock band named 'Dove'?

Tully Mars 10-04-2009 09:34 AM

No idea but sounds like something the Velvet Underground would do.

mixedmedia 10-04-2009 10:06 AM

nope, not even close...think a little later on...

Tully Mars 10-04-2009 10:14 AM

Hmm, Dove... Devo?

mixedmedia 10-04-2009 10:29 AM

Well done! You are correct, sir...you're up.

Tully Mars 10-04-2009 10:39 AM

Never heard that before, complete shot in the dark. I credit a report of maps.

Who was the first bass player for the Rolling Stones?

Tophat665 10-04-2009 01:53 PM

Let me go for the stupid and obvious: Bill Wyman.

Tully Mars 10-04-2009 03:19 PM

Nope

Tully Mars 10-05-2009 11:07 AM

Couple more hours and I'll post an easier question.

Tully Mars 10-06-2009 06:04 AM

Dick Taylor was the first bass player for the Stones.

Whats the first song ever written by Jagger and Richards?

mixedmedia 10-06-2009 11:59 AM

Is it a well-known Stones song?

Tully Mars 10-06-2009 01:26 PM

It was released by them but was a hit for another singer. My guess is you've heard of it.

If this one proves too hard also, I'll accept the first #1 UK single to be written by Jagger/Richards and released by The Stones.

Sooner or later I'll find a Stones trivia someone knows.

mixedmedia 10-06-2009 01:29 PM

Was it 'As Tears Go By?'

The_Jazz 10-06-2009 01:32 PM

As Tears Go By, which made Maryanne Faithfull a star.

---------- Post added at 04:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:31 PM ----------

Dang it, MM. Cross posting....

Their first #1 UK single? "This could be the last time"

mixedmedia 10-07-2009 07:41 AM

yikes, I missed this last night somehow...I'm pathetic at keeping up with updates, heh.

anyway, wow, I'm really surprised that was the first song they wrote...it's so sweet, lol

ok...

Which 1980's new wave diva contributed vocals and voiceover dialogue to the Frank Zappa concept album Thing-Fish.

Tophat665 10-07-2009 07:49 AM

Was it Ronnie Specter? (Or the woman from 'Til Tuesday whos name escapes me?)

Kills me I don't have the immediate answer to a Zappa question.

mixedmedia 10-07-2009 07:56 AM

Nope, think early '80s...the only clue I can think of right now would give it away, I'm afraid.

Tophat665 10-07-2009 07:58 AM

Patti LaBelle?

mixedmedia 10-07-2009 08:00 AM

Nope. I should have specified that she was part of a group. She was the lead singer of the group and had some notoriety for her over-the-top sexual persona.

Tully Mars 10-07-2009 09:38 AM

Don't know her name but pretty sure it's the chick from Missing Persons.

mixedmedia 10-07-2009 10:26 AM

Close enough. Dale Bozzio.
I was going to hint that her husband was a drummer for Zappa, but I thought that might give it away. And he, of course, was also in Missing Persons.

you're up, Tully, again

Tophat665 10-07-2009 11:29 AM

Ah! I always confuse Til Tuesday and Missing Persons. And Kajagoogoo. And Bow Wow Wow. And Howard Jones. I think it has something to do with the hair.

mixedmedia 10-07-2009 11:41 AM

haha, that could be it.
I associate Missing Persons with my first car, therefore, you know it's sentimental...

Just picture it: 1982, 17 years old and in beauty school, '78 toyota corolla w. a tapedeck...

Tully Mars 10-07-2009 01:19 PM

You're kidding about the 78 Corolla, right? If you say white H/back I'm gonna be weirded out.

When did Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young first preform?

nope, not a hatchback. and it was that weird '70s beige that looked a little like silly putty...

was it Woodstock?

Tully Mars 10-07-2009 01:31 PM

Whew!

And yes at Woodstock.

Ya never know what people are going know. UBUP... no UB40 questions please.

mixedmedia 10-07-2009 01:48 PM

that's fine, 'cause I know nothing about UB40.

What was the Talking Head's only Top 10 American hit? (too easy, probably...)

Tully Mars 10-07-2009 02:02 PM

Burnin' down the house?

mixedmedia 10-07-2009 02:03 PM

ya. your turn. :)

(i knew it was too easy)

Tully Mars 10-07-2009 02:16 PM

First one that popped in my head.

With a cost total cost of £12,500 what was the name of Dire Straits first album?

Tophat665 10-08-2009 05:07 AM

It was "Dire Straits" No?

Tully Mars 10-08-2009 06:09 AM

It was Dire Straits, yes. Too obvious?

Yer up.

Tophat665 10-08-2009 07:09 AM

Sneaky obvious. If I didn't have all their early albums in order, I might have gone with "Love Over Gold"

So, Dire Straits means really good Guitar work to me, which leads to:

On What David Bowie Album did Stevie Ray Vaughn provide the Lead Guitar tracks?

mixedmedia 10-08-2009 08:50 AM

interesting...would that be Let's Dance??

Tophat665 10-08-2009 09:24 AM

Put on your red shoes and dance the blues......

Indeed it would. You're up, mm.

Tully Mars 10-15-2009 09:01 AM

/smacks MM up side the head

Yo wake up!

mixedmedia 10-15-2009 09:24 AM

hey, yo, what already! :p

uhhhh, ok...what 50's/early '60s R&B singer started his own record label featuring great (but nearly forgotten) classic soul artists such as Johnny Morrisette, Billy Preston, The Simms Twins and The Valentinos? Extra credit (which, of course, means nothing) if you can tell me the name of the record label.

Tully Mars 10-16-2009 08:20 AM

I have no clue, never heard of half these people.

But bump. maybe someone else will know it.

mixedmedia 10-21-2009 05:19 AM

No one even wants to venture a guess?

I'll give a hint that will probably give it away...he died tragically (and too young) in 1964.

Tully Mars 10-21-2009 05:38 AM

No help here, the first though I had was quickly killed when I remembered that happened in 59'.

mixedmedia 10-21-2009 05:46 AM

ok, one of his most famous songs experienced a revival of sorts in late 2008...

Leto 10-21-2009 05:53 AM

ah crap. I was drawing a blank so I googled r&b artists who died in '64. You guys are going to kick yourselves.

Tully Mars 10-21-2009 05:58 AM

Sam Cooke?

Leto 10-21-2009 06:00 AM

lol.....

Tully Mars 10-24-2009 04:50 AM

Well MM?

mixedmedia 10-24-2009 04:54 AM

oh, doh! I'm so sorry. I'm not sure why I keep missing this thread's updates.

But yes, Tully, you are correct!

And Sam Cooke's record label was SAR Records. :)

Tully Mars 10-24-2009 05:05 AM

Never knew he had a label.

Ok, Bruce Springsteen's nickname is "The Boss" what's origins?

Bonus points if you know his previous nickname.

perripken 10-26-2009 07:12 PM

I am a huge Springsteen fan, but had to google this so I'm out. I will be interested to see the answer since when I googled it, I got quite a few. Thanks for this question Tully Mars!

Tophat665 10-26-2009 10:29 PM

Have anything to do with the 1979 Diana Ross hit of that name?

Tully Mars 10-27-2009 06:46 AM

No, I heard his answer to this question on an interview I watching when I was making up the question.

It's about as simply as it sounds.

Tophat665 10-27-2009 10:55 AM

So Bruce says to Clarence Clemons, "Big man, play it a little more....[whatever]", and Clarence says, "OK, you're the Boss."

Something like that?

Tully Mars 10-27-2009 01:18 PM

No, maybe this is too obscure. So.... according to the interview I saw Bruce said early on his nickname was "Doc." He didn't explain why but went on to say that one of his first paying gigs he was hired my a band call "Earth." He didn't much care for the music they played or the other members, but it paid. He said back in the early days making sure the club owners paid the band wasn't always pleasant nor successful. The band regulated this task to Bruce starting on his first day. He always made sure they got paid and he split the cash up with the other band members. Within a few gigs another band member stated, to him "You're the boss! Hey everyone the new kids the boss!" And it stuck. He said he didn't care much for bosses and preferred Doc.

Give me a few and I'll come up with another Q.

Tully Mars 10-28-2009 03:38 PM

Okay, sorry been powerless, literally for a while...

The Pointer Sisters hit number two on the US charts in 1979 with what Springsteen song?

Tophat665 10-29-2009 08:56 AM

I have been trying for years to erase the existence of the Pointer Sisters from my memory. With some success, even though I saw them live once. That said, I'm thinking the answer to this is "Fire". And my FSM have mercy upon me if that's right.

Tully Mars 10-29-2009 09:09 AM

You're on fire and you're up.

Ummm, sorry?

Tophat665 10-29-2009 09:42 AM

Drat. Got it right. Obviously I am not drinking enough.

After fronting Iron Maiden for some years, Bruce Dickinson took time off to produce a solo album that was released in 1990.

Name it.

perripken 11-03-2009 06:46 AM

Man....I never bought this album even though I liked Iron Maiden. Couldn't tell ya without cheating!

Tophat665 11-03-2009 07:28 AM

Hmm. Hint: There is a cover of the Mott the Hoople Cover of the David Bowie Tune, "All the Young Dudes" on there. Apparently Bruce wants to relate to you.
