It's a good idea, but what will they do differently than Chevy to make a profit? Chevy stopped making the Taxi/Cruiser platform because they simply weren't making enough money on them. If these are just "interceptors" like the Mustang 5.0 LX's then it makes more sense, since they are lower production, special use vehicles, but I don't see a whole fleet of them.

According to Car&Driver, the CHP will soon be testing a new V10 Crown Vic powered by Natural Gas that makes 500+ horsepower and high 600's for torque. It is expected to be efficient enough to recoup the extra cost in only a few years.
Around here, you just have to watch out for the State Police Z28's, Z06's and the Viper. A Viper coming up in your rearview mirror with blue and red lights flashing is one of the most intimidating things you'll ever see. |

Actually just for 2005 Dodge is going to build a police interceptor package Magnum.
I don't see them being too popular though. Police Package Vehicle: PPV) (Special Service Package: SSP) PPV Chevrolet Impala 9C1..............3.8L V6....200hp PPV Chevrolet Tahoe Pursuit...........5.3L V8....285hp PPV Chevrolet Tahoe Pursuit E85*....5.3L V8....285hp *variable fuel SSP Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD...............5.3L V8....285hp SSP Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 4WD.6.6L V8...320hp Diesel PPV Ford Police Interceptor (3.27).....4.6L V8....250hp PPV Ford Police Interceptor (3.55).....4.6L V8....250hp SSP Ford Expedition 2WD.................5.4L V8....260hp SSP Ford Explorer 2WD....................4.6L V8....239hp SSP Dodge Magnum........................3.5L V6....250hp Performance Testing ............................................0 to 60..0 to 100..T. The good old Crown Vic is still the quickest. Hate to see those old dogs go. Now that V10 Crown Vic sounds interesting. MrSelfDestruct can you find where you read that and post it? |

If there is a V10 Crown Vic in production, lemme tell ya that I'll be the first civilian in line to try to purchase one of those babies. The last car that I bought was a used cruiser...I'll tell you, once you own a cop car, you'll never go back again.
I would love to see the Chrysler 300C (or Dodge Charger) become the new police wehicle. Imagine seeing one of those behind you... Anyway, I'm amazed that the stock performance stats are so low for the Ford and Chevy police packages. Now, I know that many cops mod their vehicles (mine had a supercharger with it - it's a pretty common thing, apparently), but I'd think that Ford and Chevy would at least tune their engines to acceptable levels. I mean, come on! There's plenty of stock vehicles out there that can out-run a stock police cruiser with the above stats. I want my local police to have cars that can push out numbers comperable to a Vette or BMW V8. The police certainly shouldn't be put at a disadvantage.

After driving the crown vic, i still think the old chevy caprice feels a little quicker and nimbler. BTW, if anything, PD should use the kenny brown panther... thats a beast. Last edited by animal909; 01-24-2005 at 10:12 PM.. |

Performance Testing
............................................0 to 60..0 to 100..T. Speed...Road Course Ford Police Interceptor (3.27).......8.42....23.30........128.......1:42.8 1 Ford Police Interceptor (3.55).......8.15....22.91........119.......1:42.4 3 Chevrolet Impala 9C1..................8.76....25.29........123..... ..1:44.74 Chevrolet Tahoe Pursuit E85........8.19....23.69........125.......1:46.70 Dodge Magnum.........................9.10....24.96...... ..117.........N/A --------------------------------------------------------------------- Maybe "Lack of performance" testing would be a better term,if these numbers were taken in the snow this week excuse me, but otherwise they are dismal. 0-60 numbers are pretty average but 0-100 in 20 plus seconds means the cop better be able to catch the plate number of that speeding car 'cause he sure ain't running him down. Not sure why the top speed numbers are so low either, the 3.55 gears shouldn't drop any since the engine can't be anywhere near maximum RPM in overdrive. |

Cop cars don't need to be speed demons. Remember the old adage...you can't out run a radio. If they are chasing you and they want you bad enough...you will be caught.
Besides when you look at just what kind of cars they typically will have to chase...it's not going to take much to run down an Altima or Civic driven by somebody who know how to handle a car at high speeds. And here in Texas the people that really need the fast cars have them. I remember the old Fox body Mustang Police interceptors from the 80s and now there are a good bit of Camaro interceptors here. |

They aren't as common as they once were but you will still see a few here and there.
I wouldn't doubt it if Ford released the new Mustang to the police department for interceptor duty. They'll be getting slaughtered in the cruiser department by the Hemi powered Dodges until they get a replacement for the Panther cars but they would be able to corner a niche in the market again with a police issue Mustang. |

The 2005 Dodge Magnum is currently available to governments as V6 only units. The 2006 Magnum will be an actual Interceptor and has been heavily modified for Police use. The Magnum will have the Hemi option as stated above and will likely be the most popular engine choices by PDs. Dodge indicated that the price would be close to that of the CVs so they can compete with Ford. The Crown Victorias days are numbered and will likely be discontinued in 2007/2008 and as of yet Ford has not decided on a replacement for it. A rumor was that they would import the Ford Falcon which is currently being built in Australia by Ford. Either way it will be interesting to see who else jumps into the compitition to build the ultimate cop cruiser.........

They will have to do some serious price cutting if they are going to bring either the Charger or the Magnum within striking distance of the Crown Vic price wise.
You can get into a new Crown Vic for roughly 22k. I'd imagine the fleet sales price would be even lower. Hemi Chargers and Magnum MSRP for around 28-29k. |

We got Impalas for the local boys, a Z28 or two in the Troopers (That thing is slightly intimidating lights a flashing... ) and Crown Vics. I think theres also a Dodge Intrepid floating around. I certainly wudnt want to see a new Z06 flying up behind me, those things are badass.

The nice thing about the Magnums is that they're rear-wheel drive. Once the Crown Vics go away, Magnum will be the only rear-wheel drive vehicle with the police package. Personally, I think they would be cool. Lots of room to store stuff in the back and plenty of power to chase bad guys.

i always had this little scheme; If your driving and an unmarked car pulls up on you with its cherries flashing, call 911 and say you think someone impersonating an officer is tryin to pull you over and your fearing for your life. They would dispatch marked cars and pull the whole thing over. By this time it would be such a fiasco that u might get out of the ticket. I wouldnt advise tryin it, but just something me and my dad were kinda discussing.
