new police cars?

I did some research on google and found that the new police cars are going to be the dodge magnum v6 version... anyone confirm this? google 2005 police car and it should come up

doubleaught 01-24-2005 01:07 AM

I couldn't find any confirmation. I did find this: http://www.gulfcoastnews.com/RT2005DodgeHemiPolice.htm

DEI37 01-24-2005 05:22 AM

No. The Magnum Police Interceptors are getting the Hemi. If I remember right, Dodge confirmed this a while back.

Ilow 01-24-2005 11:38 AM

It's a good idea, but what will they do differently than Chevy to make a profit? Chevy stopped making the Taxi/Cruiser platform because they simply weren't making enough money on them. If these are just "interceptors" like the Mustang 5.0 LX's then it makes more sense, since they are lower production, special use vehicles, but I don't see a whole fleet of them.

According to Car&Driver, the CHP will soon be testing a new V10 Crown Vic powered by Natural Gas that makes 500+ horsepower and high 600's for torque. It is expected to be efficient enough to recoup the extra cost in only a few years.

Around here, you just have to watch out for the State Police Z28's, Z06's and the Viper. A Viper coming up in your rearview mirror with blue and red lights flashing is one of the most intimidating things you'll ever see.

Lockjaw 01-24-2005 09:03 PM

Actually just for 2005 Dodge is going to build a police interceptor package Magnum.
I don't see them being too popular though.

It's the slowest of all the available police packages by a good amount. The good old Crown Vic is still the quickest. Hate to see those old dogs go. Now that V10 Crown Vic sounds interesting. MrSelfDestruct can you find where you read that and post it?

TM875 01-24-2005 09:51 PM

If there is a V10 Crown Vic in production, lemme tell ya that I'll be the first civilian in line to try to purchase one of those babies. The last car that I bought was a used cruiser...I'll tell you, once you own a cop car, you'll never go back again.

I would love to see the Chrysler 300C (or Dodge Charger) become the new police wehicle. Imagine seeing one of those behind you...

Anyway, I'm amazed that the stock performance stats are so low for the Ford and Chevy police packages. Now, I know that many cops mod their vehicles (mine had a supercharger with it - it's a pretty common thing, apparently), but I'd think that Ford and Chevy would at least tune their engines to acceptable levels. I mean, come on! There's plenty of stock vehicles out there that can out-run a stock police cruiser with the above stats. I want my local police to have cars that can push out numbers comperable to a Vette or BMW V8. The police certainly shouldn't be put at a disadvantage.

according to the previously posted website and the website i saw the first time, the v6 will be standard and the HEMI will be optional. I really don't see the point of using a HEMI other than the City putting in more money to the economy. its like the chevy camaro... bragging rights. I can maybe see state troopers using the HEMI but the HEMI will prolly be out of the question for local.

After driving the crown vic, i still think the old chevy caprice feels a little quicker and nimbler.

BTW, if anything, PD should use the kenny brown panther... thats a beast.

The Crown Vic is just a nice car. Even my old beater Vic still has some decent pep to it. I've got plans for that thing when I get a new daily driver.

GetRdone 01-25-2005 04:21 PM

I hope my local cops really dont get those, running from them would be a bitch with the hemi. Although ive been in a couple squad cars, and the magnum would prove roomier for the arrested person.

I think that the less than stellar performance numbers are mostly due to the extra weight that the police packages carry around. Also I would guess that gearing has something to do with it, as you saw with the 3.55 vs the 3.27 gears, even a small change makes 1/3 of a second difference. I wouldn't want the cops at a top end disadvantage either when they're running down some yahoo who just robbed a Quickie Mart and stole some dude's M3!

GetRdone 01-26-2005 01:40 PM

know of any good place to get used police vehicles? I have a hard time locating them around my area, autions and such seem hard to find. Oh, i also knew someone that had an ex-cop crown vic, he modded it up and got pretty darn fast.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe "Lack of performance" testing would be a better term,if these numbers were taken in the snow this week excuse me, but otherwise they are dismal.

0-60 numbers are pretty average but 0-100 in 20 plus seconds means the cop better be able to catch the plate number of that speeding car 'cause he sure ain't running him down. Not sure why the top speed numbers are so low either, the 3.55 gears shouldn't drop any since the engine can't be anywhere near maximum RPM in overdrive.

Scorps 01-27-2005 08:43 AM

A dodge cop car I thought I would never see the day. I don't think my city will change they just got a shit load of new Fords. Plus I can tell the cop car from a mile away just from the head lights:)

Lockjaw 01-27-2005 08:45 PM

Cop cars don't need to be speed demons. Remember the old adage...you can't out run a radio. If they are chasing you and they want you bad enough...you will be caught.
Besides when you look at just what kind of cars they typically will have to chase...it's not going to take much to run down an Altima or Civic driven by somebody who know how to handle a car at high speeds.

And here in Texas the people that really need the fast cars have them. I remember the old Fox body Mustang Police interceptors from the 80s and now there are a good bit of Camaro interceptors here.

They still have the camaros down there....WOW!

Lockjaw 01-28-2005 02:21 PM

They aren't as common as they once were but you will still see a few here and there.
I wouldn't doubt it if Ford released the new Mustang to the police department for interceptor duty. They'll be getting slaughtered in the cruiser department by the Hemi powered Dodges until they get a replacement for the Panther cars but they would be able to corner a niche in the market again with a police issue Mustang.

BoCo 01-28-2005 06:22 PM

Ah, shit! Now how am I supposed to out run them? :o

jjibad 02-02-2005 09:04 AM

The 2005 Dodge Magnum is currently available to governments as V6 only units. The 2006 Magnum will be an actual Interceptor and has been heavily modified for Police use. The Magnum will have the Hemi option as stated above and will likely be the most popular engine choices by PDs. Dodge indicated that the price would be close to that of the CVs so they can compete with Ford. The Crown Victorias days are numbered and will likely be discontinued in 2007/2008 and as of yet Ford has not decided on a replacement for it. A rumor was that they would import the Ford Falcon which is currently being built in Australia by Ford. Either way it will be interesting to see who else jumps into the compitition to build the ultimate cop cruiser.........

Lockjaw 02-02-2005 11:54 AM

They will have to do some serious price cutting if they are going to bring either the Charger or the Magnum within striking distance of the Crown Vic price wise.
You can get into a new Crown Vic for roughly 22k. I'd imagine the fleet sales price would be even lower. Hemi Chargers and Magnum MSRP for around 28-29k.

krwlz 02-03-2005 05:27 AM

We got Impalas for the local boys, a Z28 or two in the Troopers (That thing is slightly intimidating lights a flashing... ) and Crown Vics. I think theres also a Dodge Intrepid floating around. I certainly wudnt want to see a new Z06 flying up behind me, those things are badass.

mrbill700 02-13-2005 01:17 AM

The PD here just got(well i just started seeing it in september) a '04 mustang gt cruiser.

MXL 02-13-2005 05:19 AM

Too bad they are Canadian imports. I think the government should be buying domestic vehicles, to help keep the trade deficit down and employee the people who are paying for the vehicles.

the-wangster 02-17-2005 06:52 AM

The best police cars ever were the 80's tv show ones. You know the chevy caprice. Those cars rolled!

bigdaddy19 02-22-2005 11:24 AM

The nice thing about the Magnums is that they're rear-wheel drive. Once the Crown Vics go away, Magnum will be the only rear-wheel drive vehicle with the police package. Personally, I think they would be cool. Lots of room to store stuff in the back and plenty of power to chase bad guys.

Wow, that's crazy, I can't say I've ever seen a Viper in actuall use by a police force around here. The thing I hate is the unmarked cars they have, along one highway where I used to have to drive every day to get to work and back the State Police had 2 or 3 unmarked Camaros, and those always made me nervous, so I guess they worked haha. Haven't seen any of them lately though.

GetRdone 02-22-2005 09:37 PM

i always had this little scheme; If your driving and an unmarked car pulls up on you with its cherries flashing, call 911 and say you think someone impersonating an officer is tryin to pull you over and your fearing for your life. They would dispatch marked cars and pull the whole thing over. By this time it would be such a fiasco that u might get out of the ticket. I wouldnt advise tryin it, but just something me and my dad were kinda discussing.

I drive one of those. It definitely rolls. Finely made car. Probably the best I've owned so far out of my "used" cars.
