30 lbs in 30 days... no kidding!
I am back from Army training. I was sent into the lion's den needing to lose a little weight, and there is nothing like a Military course to peel the weight off.
I weighed myself before I went, for curiosity sake. I really could care less about how I look and what number the scale displays. One guy told me "It looks like you are losing weight" and I replied that my uniform was fitting a little differently. We did not have access to a scale, nor did I have the time to inquire. I got home, and stepped on the ol' truth machine, and POW! 30 lbs lighter. I am back to my "ripped" weight. It was bad (long marches and heavy weight) and the PT was intense. There were 5 platoons, and the DND is thinking about adopting a new program called "Cross Fit". 2 Platoons did regular PT, 2 did Cross Fit (mine included) and 1 was a control group meaning they did whatever the Commander wanted on any given day. Ladies and Gentlemen, I should direct you to the site www.crossfit.com to check it out. I was eating healthy, well balanced meals (and I was eating alot, trust me). I walked past the dessert tray, for no good reason. I am going to try to keep up the PT schedule, but unless there is an NCO screaming at me, I doubt that I will be able to stay in this shape. It was intense, and was wondering if there are any other people on TFP who have tried Cross Fit or been subjected to their mascot "Pukey the Clown".

When my husband got done with bootcamp, he was very thin. His face was pinched; he lost A LOT of weight, and he wasn't too big before he went in. He didn't stay that weight though; he put a little back on and stayed about the same during his four years in. Glad to see you are back!!

Sounds brutal BigBen. But I feel better about Canada knowing that lads like you are ready to do what's necessary.

Congrats, Ben. You'll probably live longer now. If you can't maintain the exercise schedule (no one will blame you), try to stay on a healthy diet consisting of organic fruits and veggies, lean grass fed meat, nuts, and a bit of natural grains (and non fat dairy, if you want).

Considering 1 lb of fat is 3,500 calories, you would be burning 3,500 calories a day on average. Some of that could be water weight being off, but 30lbs in 30 days is still quite an accomplishment.

Let's give due credit - he was burning off 3,500 EXCESS calories per day. I did my first CrossFit workout yesterday. It was brutal and today I'm having difficulty moving my legs, but it was also fun. I'll definitely be continuing with it. There are some fun, moitivated guys in NY doing it in a group. As for Pukey, I almost met him. Fortunately I wasn't strong enough to be doing power cleans after weighted tabata squats and 150 full range situps. If I had done those lifts, Pukey and I would have been real close.
One question for BigBen931 - how did you guys start doing CrossFit cold turkey and still remain functional (in terms of muscle soreness/stiffness and fatigue)?

I swear that there were times when I had to get help getting dressed in the morning, my arms were so sore!
The Chelsea Mile was so bad that the instructors let us walk for the rest of the day, meaning no marching... Chelsea Mile: 100 full range squats (no weight, just your body) followed by a 400m run. 75 " " " " 50 " " " " 25 " " " " it was so intense, I felt like I was a newborn baby learning how to walk again. We tried to march, and we couldn't keep step. The marching NCO started to scream at us "What the fuck is wrong with you people today?!?" and when we told him, he laughed and said, "Okay, make your way on your own time, but just this once..." My muscles seemed to be constantly sore and stiff. They also EXPLODED out of my skin at about week 3. It was awesome to see the results like that. The handstand pushups were very intimidating, and the intensity of every workout was something that I never got used to. I have new respect for body builders, if that is what it takes to get ripped. Anyone else take a look at the website? Do you health and fitness TFP'ers like what you see? Is there parts that concern you? I want to find a program that fits me best, and sofar this is it. I am always looking for good imput though.

I've been following the website since you posted this here. I haven't gone to the gym to meet Pukey and the other NYC folks yet, but I have done the WOD twice now (on the days I have off from karate). If you listen to your body and adjust the workouts when necessary, this is the perfect workout regime - it never gets old and it never stops being hard. Actually, since I made a commitment from the start to try and get through the warm-up every time (which is already a workout in itself for me), getting through three sets of 20 push-ups in karate class has seemed almost easy. (This, from a person who wasn't able to do even one real push-up just three months ago.) I'm finding more and more that my muscles are ready to do it as long as I'm willing to push through the pain.

And good news - I can walk up and down stairs today with only moderate assistance from my arms and the handrail. I never figured I would be so happy that my bathroom has handicap-friendly bars everywhere, but this week I have been so thankful...

Well, I'm no expert.... BUT, it seems to me that CrossFit workouts are actually less equipment-intensive. If you want to get started, go through their archives and find the more body-weight oriented WODs. Also, I'd highly recommend starting without weights or with really light stuff. You'll need a pull-up bar, a place to do small sprints (even back and forth in your garage), something to lift (people often talk about canvas sea bags full of sand), a place to do situps, a stop-watch, puke bucket (not kidding)... Get a PVC pipe or broomstick to get working on olympic weightlifting form. You can pick up the other things gradually. A 45 pound 0-bar, kettlebells, some bumberplates with handles would be the basic stuff when you are ready to get smoked. By the time you need more than that, you'll know what you need and where to get it. There is a forum section of their website that deals with equipment and gym set-up: http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messa...rd-topics.html
Depending on where you are, there may be other people you can work-out with. That is definitely helpful.

So far, I've been able to do a small handful of the workouts with just my pull-up bar, the stopwatch on my cellphone, a couple of chairs, a broomstick and a couple of heavy textbooks.
While I'm here, I could use some advice specifically from CFers. I have been working on being able to do chin-ups and pull-ups for a couple of weeks now, and my neck has been cramping for the last two days between the chin/pull-up negatives and the push-ups. I'm not sure how much I'm supposed to rest or if I'm just supposed to push through the pain and keep doing it every day. The neck cramping has been confusing because I'm very careful not to tense up my neck and shoulders when I'm doing these exercises - it's afterward, when I raise my arms to stretch, my neck muscles will all of a sudden get extremely tense and then cramp up. Anybody know what the deal is and how I can fix it and stay on the CF fast track? I want to be able to do full extension chin-ups and pull-ups soon!

Dude, get a set of dumbbells, at about 20% body weight, and rock on... Kettleballs and the other stuff doesn't matter. these guys are insane about chinups, so a chimp bar (that what we called it) is really a necessity. Look at it this way. Installing a bar is cheaper than looking for bar weights. You guys have convinced me.. TIME TO START A TFP CROSS FIT PAGE.... The bad news, we will become close friends with PUKEY. The good news, we will be so ripped when we meet him that he will be scared!
