Having Wisdom Teeth pulled tomorrow...
Someone make me feel better! I'm freaking out about this. I've never had a cavity or teeth pulled before, but from the stories I've been hearing this is even worse than just having a "normal" tooth pulled.
Part of it is probably that I have no idea what to expect. My gf had hers out years ago and was put to sleep when it happened and doesn't remember much about it, not that she'd tell me if it was a bad experience anyway. My doctor said I should be fine by sunday, but I've heard stories from people at work that missed up to a week after getting them yanked!!! Can someone atleast give me an idea of what's gonna happen when I get there? |

luckily for me, i don't have any upper wisdom teeth, just my bottom two which are almost fully grown out, i've yet to pull them and i'm not sure if i ever will, depending on if it's a danger to my other teeth or bacteria or something similar, which i'm not familiar with so i wouldn't know.
as far as what friends and family tell me about it, all of them were put to sleep during the actual operation, so that wasn't the bad part, but they said it's when the wake up that they feel the excruciating pain, that lasts for several good days, but the pain killers should atleast help suppress it a bit. i believe a large factor has to do with how fully developed the teeth actually are before you have the removed, so i guess if they are still below your gums, it will be more painful, if not, then less...but that's just a guess. anyways, good luck...let us know if it was as bad as you thought. |

Well, here are a few other threads on the subject, some info, some stories:
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=83835 http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=83042 Mine honestly weren't that bad, I was up and about in a few days, with no major pain or anything. So, don't stress too much! Just do what the doc tells you to when it comes to recovery, and you should be golden.

I've had them pulled top and bottom several times...somewhere here is a story on how Im on my 3rd set lol
The top ones were easier on me than the bottom ones. Do what the dentist says......there is nothing worse than a dry socket, that is PAINFUL, but if you follow instructions you really should be good in a few days. A lot of times the people that were put to sleep or took a week to recover were people that had impacted wisdom teeth, so they were cut out not pulled.

I was knocked out too. The first 8 hours after I woke up are a blur. I don't know why gang bangers are killing each other over crack, because whatever this guy used is some GOOD shit. I was higher'n a kite the whole day.
The next 24 hours were pretty painful but it was kept under control by lots of drugs. After that, the pain faded rapidly, I was on solid food within 48 hours, and the only long term effect was that the anti-infection stuff they pack in the holes tastes pretty nasty for about a week, so don't expect to enjoy your food very much. |

Usually it's no big deal... a few days on painkillers and it's business as usual. Tell your dentist your concerns and ask what you should watch for. I'm sure it would put your mind at ease. Good luck.

A part of it depends on how old you are. Seeing as you're over thirty that means your teeth have grown roots into your jaw, so I'm not sure how that will affect the tooth removal, but I know for those who had them out when they were only teens it was less painful. I'm actually having mine out this summer when school lets out and I've got time to be high as a kite for several days.
Be sure to come back and tell us your whole expirience. |

I had mine done in the dentist chair - it is not really that much worse to any other dentist thingy, though the few days after I was really tired and quite sore - nothing a few panadeine forte can't make better - so keep your drugs handy, and use them often!!

I wonder how he made out??? Mine were a big deal only because I had 5 of them and they didn't want to come out. However I wasn't in any pain until I developed a dry socket.

Well, everything seems OK. It's been about 5 hours since the procedure and other than a little soreness it feels alright. I was in the chair for about an hour and a half and the doctor said he had a bit of trouble with 2 of them, so much so that he thought he might have to get help, but eventually he was able to get them out. He said I have an unusually strong jawbone that was causing some trouble and didn't want to give some of the teeth up. Also, there was some excessive bleeding, in fact, it's just recently stopped, but I feel fine, otherwise. Maybe it's just the drugs, but I was expecting a lot more pain at this point.
On a funny note, they told me not to eat or drink anything for 5 hours before the procedure, then when I got there I had to sit in the waiting room with the Food Network on the TV for 70 minutes!!! My stomach was making all kinds of noises! I'm just taking all precautions to try to avoid the "DRY SOCKET"! It sounds like that could be pretty painful. Hopefully I'll be feeling even better tomorrow after I get about 8-10 hours of sleep tonite. |

I wish I could get mine taken out. My jaw clamps down when I'm asleep and pinches my cheek in between my wisdom teeth and my upper molars. When I wake up it feels like someone has punched me on both sides of my jaw every morning. I haven't closed my jaw for a solid year because of the pinch thing. I really need to get these taken out. I haven't even mentioned when the actual wisdom teeth cause my gums to hurt...Jesus H, that's pain! I'd love to take shots of Orajel when that's happening.

That was one of the worst experiences of my life. Right up there with food poisoning, both in severity and duration. I called it "Gollum mouth." A more descriptive name would be "painful Gollum mouth." But like Shakran said, you should be all right if you follow their instructions... I got it because I'm on birth control and people on hormonal treatments of any kind are WAY more likely to develop dry socket. *shudders at the memory* Best of luck on that recovery!

I just went to the dentist and he said one of my wisdom teeth is really close to the nerve line, and if I get it pulled there is a chance I will get a numb jaw!
There's not enough room for it to come in either.. One side of the wisdom tooth is below the molar.. |

I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled in late November. The doc put the anesthesia on my face and we talked for about 2 minutes before I passed out...woke up and it was all done. Coming out of it was fun, it's like youre walking around in a cloudy dream, you will be completely cracked out, lol.
There's nothing to worry about. It's quick and painless, the only annoying thing is you will have pits where your teeth used to be which will chronically get clogged with food for months afterwards. Make sure in the first 2-3 weeks you dont let ANY food get stuck back there, the best thing to do is rinse really thoroughly with water to get it out, which you'll get really good at within a day or two. |

I'm a dentist, so I'll answer that one. Although a metal partial takes some getting used to, it's about the best option as far as being relatively cheap or if your other teeth aren't very strong. A less bulky option is a fixed bridge, but if you are missing teeth on opposite sides of your mouth you would need 2 bridges, and as they each cost about double the cost of your partials you would be looking at a lot more money. They also require strong teeth on either side of the space to attach to, and these teeth have to be ground down a little for the bridge to attach to. It would be great if you could have removable partials that only were on the one side, and I have seen them (they look like a crab, a tooth with claws on either side) but there's a higher than desirable risk of aspiration or swallowing it. NOT GOOD!
The other option is implants, which cost more yet and involve surgery. I hope the metal sounds a little better now, Metalmouth! |

What is the deal with wisdom teeth anyway? I'll be 20 next month, and so far so good in that department. Though one of my friends of the same age had hers out I think 2 years ago. Does everyone have to go through this?

ei555 - they're teeth that for some people, still can come in and not knock the rest of your teeth out of alignment, since they have enough jaw room. For those unlucky folks, getting the teeth pulled prevents dental problems down the road with overcrowding or nerve pinching.

Also, after having the teeth pulled I developed drysockets on both sides! Bitch! And on top of it, the Vicodin I was given didn't do a damn thing for me. After having my teeth out on Friday I had stopped taking the Vicodin in favor of Advil by Sunday nite, and it did a much better job. And then I was "lucky" enough to discover that Clove Oil is the nastiest taste there is. I had to go back three times so they could shove these Clove Oil packs into the holes where my teeth used to be to help the recovery process. These things made my mouth water like crazy and if I ever happened to swallow any of it I started dry heaving. The first morning I had them I went to the dentist at 7:30am, and was back home by 9am, so I went back to sleep since I didn't have to be to work until 2pm. Well I woke up to find my t-shirt soaked because I had been drooling all over myself. Real nice.
So, all in all it was a fun experience. HA~! |

I've heard of quite a few people w/ multiple sets of wisdom teeth, actually.
I had mine taken out when I was 16. It wasn't bad at all. It's the weirdest fuckin feeling ever.. yeah you're numb and call, but your jaw still gets that COLD feeling when they're poppin em out. It doesn't HURT, but it makes you shudder just knowing that the feeling is caused by them yanking and ripping at these huge ass teeth.

I had 5, I may have mentioned that earlier. My dry socket was the worst part. Lasted almost 2 weeks. It sucked. I happen to like the taste of clove oil, so that didn't bother me. Though all of the food that I ate tasted like cloves, but it could have been worse, it could have been hurting.
