Cat Peeing all Over

We have a boy cat that was neutered at about a year and a half old. Problem now is that he pees. Constantly. He has no shame about it. This morning, as I was toweling off, he squatted outside the bathroom door and pissed right there. We've found stuff that pics the scent and stain up pretty well, but we'd like to just have him stop peeing all over all together. He uses the litterbox on most occasions, and we do have two litterboxen for both of our cats (we have a female about a year older than him). Our vet said to try a few things, but if that didn't work, we could try Prozac. PROZAC!?!?!?! For our cat?!?! I could barely give them a tranquilizer pill when we moved, and they want me to give this cat a pill DAILY?

Any help you could give me and NatureGirl would be greatly appreciated, as we're at our wits end. We don't want to have to get rid of him.

What did your vet suggest? Peeing outside the litterbox is usually a protest of some sort. Do you clean the litterbox frequently? It might also be a dominance thing, sort of a protest against the older cat. Before you try prozac try things like Bach rescue remedy (you can pick it up at most health stores) or valerian root. They're natural anti-anxiety remedies that sometimes fix behavior that's mood-based. Good luck!

i had a kittie that I tried for one year to figure out why she was "protesting" for the past 2 years.

we figured out that the other cat was constantly beating this youngster. we ended up having to give her away.

The Vet suggested getting another litter box and putting it where he pees, then moving it inch by inch to a more permanent location.

We clean the litterboxen out on a daily basis, so I can't imagine that is the problem.

The cat's "play" pretty often. Whenever OlderCat comes in from outside, YoungerCat (the Peeing Bandit) chases her down and wrestles with her. I think that they are playing. I don't know.

What form is the Rescue Remedy and the Valerian root in? How do I administer it?

Is he spraying or just peeing...

spraying happens when the cat feels like the rule over his domain is threatened, or when theres drastic changes to his environment.

If its just peeing, maybe hes just sick of holding it in until he gets to the box... senility and all... Id do that if you cut off my manhood...

I'm pretty sure that he's spraying. We flew him across the country last year, but it's been a year and he should be adjusted to the *drastic* change in environment. The vet checked him out and said that there aren't any medical factors that contribute to this.

He really doesn't rule the roost at all. The other cat does.

A year is a long enough time to get acclamated to the new place, really it only takes a month, and 2 weeks to realign their location-sense.

Male cats always like to be on top though, even if they are the little guys. Usually when theres competition between a male and any other cat, the male (or both, if theres two) will spray to try to exert dominance. Could be your little kitty is growing up and wants to rule his kingdom?

Prozac, thats just great though, he'll be more happy about taking them after a week of being on them...

Rescue Remedy is a liquid - you give them a few drops directly in the mouth with a dropper if they'll lap it up, or on a treat or in their water. Valerian comes usually in capsule form. You can get it in tea bags but it smells like feet so the capsule form is the less stinky of the options. I just bust them open and feed them to my neurotic cat. She laps it up. She doesn't pee outside the box, but she does lick her belly bald/raw. The valerian especially has helped with that.

You guys, thank you so much for all you're wonderful advice. Along with picking up Simple Solution (kills the odor and the stain) tonight, I'm going to get some Rescue Remedy and/or Valerian root. My little buddy has been thru so much in his tiny life that I want to provide him with a good home and stability, and you all are helping with that. Thanks again.

NatureBoy-

here are some more resources that might be useful:

<a href="http://www.rescuers.com/menagerie/Litterbox.htm">http://www.rescuers.com/menagerie/Litterbox.htm</a>

<a href="http://www.animalbehaviorassociates.com/bpc_uringmarking.htm">http://www.animalbehaviorassociates....ingmarking.htm</a>

<a href="http://www.catsinternational.org/articles/housesoiling/spraying_probs_solved.html">http://www.catsinternational.org/art...bs_solved.html</a>

There were plenty more - just do a google search for "cat litterbox problems" or "cat spraying problems".

I'm really glad you're giving this cat a chance - so many people just give up on their pets. But, if the problem is with the older cat, as in Cynthetiq's case, sometimes the best option might be finding them a new home. Not all people get along and can live with each other, why do we assume that all pets should? I hope you can find a way to solve this problem without having to give him away, though - it sounds like he has a good home

ironically now the older cat is howling because I guess she's missing the other kitten. Oddly enough, I think she's looking for the other cat and is calling for her.

She howls every couple of hours.

Doesn't sounds like something the the front wheel of an SUV wouldn't take care of... I kid, I kid. That is rough though, we love our pets but sometimes they just do things that make them difficult to live with. Is there any chance the cat could spend more time outdoors? Its in your best interest to resolve that issue as there is no way to disguise cat piss, and cat owners never seem to know that they and their place smell like it.

This may be a little strange, but try a third littler box. Cats don't like to pee and crap in the same place. My two boys now have their own pee box, and a crap box that they share. No more "accidents".

My wife and I have had problems with one of our cats defecating where she isn't supposed to. We've had some success with the synthetic pheremone spray. This is a small spray bottle we got from our vet that simulates "marking" by a dominant cat. You spray a few areas around the house with it every day.

Apparently, it convinces the cat that's marking its territory that it is no longer "their" territory. They stop marking. It has the side effect of making the cat(s) much more laid-back and friendly. They don't seem to have the need to assert authority anymore.

I had a cat that peed out of the box. Tried EVERYTHING and nothing worked. Vet told us that once the cat gets in the habit, it's virtually impossible to break them of it. Ended up giving the cat to a no-kill shelter. Sucked, but couldn't stand the smell of the cat pee another day.

Our cat was pissing in the living room so often (every day) we just had to put newspaper down where it was going and change it every day. Turns out that it was just getting to old to get into the litterbox when it had the cover on it. We took the cover off and she's been going in there now.

But now the male cat who never learned how to use the litterbox is going in the corner instead of outside like usual. Punk.

Two things to consider. First, this could be a behavior problem with little recourse. Second, it could be a urinary tract infection, more commen in females, I think. Your vet can order food with a different ph level that may do the trick. It worked with a cat I once owned.

I like cat, I just can't eat all of one at one time.
