How to get in shape??
I am a 23 year old male, and my physical condition is in my mind below average. I played High school basketball and Baseball alll throughout high school and particiipated in intermural sports in college, However, I seemed to have never been able to shed my "gut" or develope any kind of muslce defination.
Currently, I do not own a home gym and since money is tight for me at the moment I am unable to become a member at our local fitness center. Basically that leaves me without weights or any type of fitness machines to help tone my body. My diet is very lax and I pretty much eat whatever I want whenever I want. I know I can improve my diet and such, however I am having a hard time getting the willpower to do so. Any suggestions on some tecniques you guys use to help improve your diets and how to avoid the cravings for sweets and junk? Lastly, Does anyone know of some simple excersies you can do around the house? I currently own an excercise bike that I bought at a garage sale and it is from around the early 80's it seems. Onto my last question, Does anyone know of some good vitamins or pills I could purchase from a vitamin store that are relativly inexpensive, that I could be taking in my hopes of getting in better shape? Thanks in advance for all of your help. |

Exercises: get the cupcake out of your mouth and run around the block a bit.
Diet: If you are having willpower problems, start slowly. For instance, eat one healthy meal a day to start. After you are ok with that, go to two. No matter what though, always have a splurge day in your week where you eat whatever you want. For me, that day is Sunday. Chinese buffet, baby Good luck.

do small changes in your diet that you will be able to keep up, so that it's not too drastic. trying running, all you need is a good pair of shoes. if you can, just go out and buy a couple of dumbells, you can use them to do a bunch of basic exercises, and while they might not be heavy enough to really push yourself, you can build some good muscular endurnace. don't bother with trying any of the pills. get a good multivitamin, but don't try any of the fat reducers and such. i think most are placebo like, and those that do work at all, you still have to watch what you eat and exercise to get results.

Ride your exercise bike while watching TV, playing video games (or read a book) for 30 min a day, at least 5-6 times a week. Work up to 45 minutes. Outside entertainment is the key, it makes the time go ALOT quicker, easier to stick with the plan a little longer. I have lost as much as 15 lbs in 3 months or so doing this, and I drink 1.5 cases of beer each weekend. I gain some back whenever I quit, then I go back on the program.
I am actually using a treadmill now, but I have done it on a bike, too. |

For eating properly, make a list of things you want to buy and stick to it. Don't go to the grocery store when you are hungry. That way there won't be any of the bad stuff around to snack on. That is what I did. If you cannot do that, at least gradually phase out eating the bad stuff. As for exercise, just start off slow and build up endurance for running/biking or whatever you are doing.

Ive been working in bike shops on and off, and I started road biking and later racing to get into shape. Now Im doing triatholons, 2 years later.
Small changes first... I cant help you with the diet because I eat anything and everything (just lucky I guess), but as far as exercise, my best advice for you is - do it with a friend. A friend will egg you on, get you going, and will make you compeditive. As you both progress together, you will both see improvements, and, of course, strengthen a friendship. Thats all I got for you. It doesnt really matter what the excercise - start with easy cardios and light weights, then decide what you want, but definitely do it with a friend. |

Take stairs instead of elevators and escalators. (This from someone who works on the 13th floor of his building and has been doing it since January.) Walk to the corner store instead of driving there. Anytime you can find a way to stay in motion, rather than let one of today's modern conveniences get you somewhere (and it's reasonable), it'll help you drop pounds.
