Too young to have a job?

My daughter is 15 and has an after school job. She only works Monday thru Friday and for only 2 hours a day. She will not work during the summer or during Christmas break. Sometimes I think she is too young to have a job and I am making her grow up to fast. I asked her the other day and she said not many of her friends have jobs. Is she too young?

I would think that break times would be the better time to have a job during school. That is typically when most teens work. Personally, I wasn't allowed to work any time but during breaks or on weekends. My parents thought--and I agree with them--that school should come first.

While work teaches responsibility, so do academics and extracurriculars. I learned more from my extracurriculars than I ever would have at any job during high school (i.e. working fast food, pizza). I volunteered a lot, and the skills from those experiences are ones I still use.

What is the money being used for that she has to work 10 hours a week? Is she saving it up for something?

Did you ask her to work or was it her decision? If it was yours, did you discuss it with her first?

Personally, I feel it's a great lesson in responsibility. I began working summers when I was 12. Two hours a day isn't much, as long as she's maintaining and/or improving grades and has a social life.

She is involved in extracurricular activities ie band, color guard, tkd, and beta club. She also volunteers at church every Sunday in the coffee shop and teaches Sunday School. She is a 4.0 student and I have told her that if he grades are effected she will quit. Right now she is getting ready to go to Disney World with the band. They leave the day after Christmas. So the money that she has made so far is going for spending money and she helped pay for her trip. She is also saving for a car and she puts so much in her college fund every payday. She also wants to go to Spain next year with the Spanish club. I just wonder if it is too much.

It was her idea. I was totally against it. I think it is great for her to learn responsibility but, I don't want it to smoother her with everything else she has going on. So far she has been doing it for three months and she has kept up with everything great. I just don't want her to feel like she had too much responsibility to soon.

That is a lot on her plate, but each kid is different. Some are able to multitask and actually thrive on it. Let her know how you feel and that it's okay for her to come to you if she begins to feel it's too much.

It sounds like she has a definitely goal for the money - I would applaud her for being able to make a choice and still keep everything going. Maybe just sitting down and reconfirming her priorities will help keep communication channels open if you think she might be stretching herself too thin.

I was exactly like your daughter when I was 15. I was in band, worked 4 nights a week (12 hrs/wk), and kept up my grades. I thrived on being busy, and honestly I think it really helped me when I got into college. I was used to being able to do many things at once, and I had less of an adjustment than some friends who were trying to support themselves and commit to school at the same time.

I worked when I was 12-13 with a paperboy route. I had my first company when I was 14. I volunteered when I was 15. I worked 2-3 jobs when I was 16. I would ditch school so that I could work when I was a senior in high school as I was an area manager of 4-5 Fotomat booths.

I liked having the money. I made average grades, but I made those grades with little to no effort.

In hindsight, I do wish that I didn't work so much as a youth. Like amonkie, I found it useful in college and post college. I never graduated because I had too many people offering me sackfuls of money back when no one knew computers.

I don't think there is a too young if it's a choice.

If she wants to work and her education isn't suffering, it will only help he later in life. I know a few recent graduates that can't get a job, because they have no work experience. I know one, having a real hard time getting a job in a field she's certified and trained for, because she lacks work experience.

We all have to pay our dues in the job market, if she can get hers paid before graduating high school. Good for her.

I was the same way, I worked whenever I could as a teen. When I was younger, I picked Apples and Corn for local farmers. Through high school I worked at a ski resort and in retail. Because of my work history I was able to step into a very good job at an electrical manufacturer and work my way up quickly right out of high school.

I went back to school several times on my own to further my education, but never gained a degree of any type. I probably have enough hours and courses for a Masters in something. But nothing on paper.

If I could do it over, I would have completed a Masters program, just for the paper. Only because not having that piece of paper kept me from getting a couple of jobs I wanted. I had the qualifications, but without the paper the employers wouldn't promote or hire me. I even had one company move me into a position that 'required' a degree, worked in the position for two years, then new management demoted me. Not because of performance, which was excellent, but because of that stupid piece of paper. It never made sense to me, but I've found that you can't really fight it.

TL;TR Get all the work experience you can, but don't let it interfere with your education.

Here in Finland municipalities have 2 week summer jobs reserved for certain amount of students starting from age 15. It's mostly mowing lawns or taking care of kids at summer clubs. Some of my son's friends were already 15 last year, so he was quite disappointed, when he wasn't chosen this summer and the others got their second chance already.

Later in the summer he luckily got a job outside the system, it was simple helping at a factory stapling roof trusses, 8 hours a day, the usual working day. He was very pleased and eager to work and get some own money.

Here the teens have 2,5 month summer vacation, so 2 weeks work is not much. My son has long school days and hobbies, so at this point it's not wise to think about working during school periods.
