Should I be pissed?

I apologise if this turns into a long story...

So I've been looking for a new/better job for a while now. The criteria were simple: It had to be in my hometown with an established IT company with either the same or a better salary package. Needless to say, the search has been all but easy.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I just happened to find myself on the website of a recruitment agency that was advertising just the position I was looking for. Obviously, I applied immediately and received an email back the very next day requesting an interview (with the recruitment people) for a few days later.

Interview with the recruitment people went well - they forwarded my CV to my prospective employer and told me they'd contact me. 2 days later, I received word that I was to appear for an interview at the offices of said employer-to-be the following Monday afternoon.

So I travel the 75kms 'home' and skip work Monday in order to make the afternoon interview. All goes well and they want me back for a 2nd interview with their boss. Fine. Scheduled for Friday of that week at 17:00.

Friday comes, I leave work early (again travelling the 75kms) and get to the interview at 16:45 wanting to make a good impression on the big boss. Go up to the conference room at 17:00 and am told he's in a meeting. Wait with the lady from HR and make polite small-talk. Wait some more. 17:40 she decides to step out into the hall to catch his attention and succeeds. He comes out and I overhear him telling her that his meeting could go on till 19:00 and that she should reschedule. Back he goes. No apology. Reschelued for the next Friday at 16:00.

Somewhere in the middle of Wednesday last week I get a call from HR lady above - Big Boss is going to be busy and can I please come in on Tuesday morning at 08:00. No apology, and she sounds irritated. Fine. I agree.

Now back to the original question. Should I be pissed off? I mean I feel like I've had my chain yanked for the last coupla weeks by these people. Am I being unreasonable, or should they have been a bit more courteous?

depends on how badly you want the job determines whetheryou should be pissed or not... Things come up and people get busy, meetings run late... unpredictable things happen... sucks for you... but you want something from them...

The question you should ask yourself -- are you pissed enough to not want to work for the company? If it bugs you enough that you're questioning whether you should be pissed or not - why do you want to work for them?

I guess it's more a "Would you be pissed" kinda thing. No, this hasn't changed the fact that I still want to work for them, but I guess I just want to know whether I have the right to be just a little peeved/irritated with them.

Or am I just being unreasonable?

I think you should be pissed. However I would not let that stop me from pursuing the job. From your side as an applicant for the position it seems as if you are being treated rudely and with little respect for your time. But you don't know how busy the "boss" is or how important his reasons are for rescheduling your interview. I wouldn't give up yet.

Gee healer, I'd be annoyed at the constant reschedule, but they don't know the distance you've had to travel or juggling act you've had to do to accommodate them, nor would I think, would they really care.

Unfortunately I think if you pipe up and and diplomatically explain the inconvenience this creates for you, it could put a bad taste in their mouth about hiring you. But you do have every right. They can't possibly think that people are so flexible. Most people who'd be applying would most likely be employed and have to be doing the same rescheduling as you.

On the flip side - doesn't this kind of tell you the type of employer they are or potentially would be? If they don't have the courteousy to excuse themselves for any inconvenience caused, don't you think this must filter down to the way they handle their employer / employee relations? And what about their clients? Is this a reputable company in the eyes of some of their clients?

Job interviews are a 2 way street too. You've done the respectful and polite thing by being both flexible and ON TIME for your interviews. Just because they're nice enough (or so they think) to let you be interviewed, does that give them the right to treat you like crap? Def not.

Give it some thought Healer, it could be a sign that some other better position is coming your way. Best of Luck!

I agree that it's rude, but there's no point in bringing it up if you really want the job. Also, I agree on the type of employer...only saying because for the job I'm in now, my interview got rescheduled (though I wasnt employed elsewhere at the time) and it definitely didn't start on timeŽat all either. And now I know it's because my boss is only worried about his own schedule and no-one else's, though he expects to me arrive on time everymorning even though I often stay after hours because he's left things to the last minute. But it's up to you...if the job is worth it and also you see that there is room for dynamic development within your position and also room to go up the career ladder, then go for it. Every job has it's problems.

Whether or not you should be pissed is up to you. They're not actually trying to yank your chain; the boss is just overwhelmed right now, and/or disorganized. That said, I agree with the other posters: this gives you a pretty good idea of what life is like that company; no matter how good your coworkers, the boss's style resonates down through the company; and if it's an irritating, maddening style, that's going to affect everything you do there.

Maybe the next time you speak with them to arrange an appointment you can be a little assertive and make sure that the person you are meeting with will be able to meet with you. Cost of gasoline to travel plus taking time off from work is creating an investment into this job before you even have it.

Another thought, maybe they are trying to see if you are serious about wanting the job? My current job was that way, the whole company is notorius for only hiring people who've interviewed and repeatedly call back to check on their status(usually they say undetermined)

Frankly I would be pissed, if I wanted the job I would smile, nod and go back wagging my proverbial tail, if it wasn't a biggie for me I would let them know that I can't make the interview and attemptto reschedule them to a convenient time.

I suppose the level of annoyance and the level of displayed annoyance have to be totally separate, stuff does come up, heck my managers are never at their desks as they have meetings 7:30-4pm every day... scheduling to meet them is hard!

Thanks for all the replies folks. For me, it wasn't so much the fact that he was unavailable - I mean I have days where I'm unreachable all day - it was that there was an apparent lack of appreciation for my time an effort. I'm as understanding as the next guy, but the least they could have done was make a decent apology and maybe offer to pay for the mileage I put in.

As an update, I just had my interview with the Services manager a few hours ago. Despite pouring rain and heavy traffic I was 5 mins early. He was 45 mins late. But he did call at 08:30 to say that most of the roads in his area were flooded, so I'm not going to hold it against him too much.

The interview itself went well. I just hope they offer me a package worth considering. While waiting the 45 mins for him to arrive I happened to strike up a conversation with one of the technical guys there. From what he told me, it's not likely. But I'll cross the negotiation bridge when I get to it.

Again, thanks for all the replies. It's much appreciated.

After the decision is made whether you get the job or not I would write a letter to the company and specifically to the person who rescheduled on your repeatedly. I would explain that the lack of courtesy or even lack of apology for tardiness, for rescheduling, and for inconvenience caused displayed a lack of respect for you and that you hope they don't normally treat customers/clients in such a way. Make the letter simple, professional and non-personal. Explain that you are saying something in their interest because they need to know how their behavior would appear to outsiders.

That's what I'd do.

Good Luck - I hope they offer you a decent package. I'd be sure to get EVERY promise in writing or you could end up having all kinds of trouble. I would see their behavior as a lack of organization and this could mean a very stressful kind of job.

Another update.

I got the job.

The day after my interview with the Services manager, the recruitment agency called me to let me know that they were very interested.

The initial package they offered, though, was too low for me to make the move. I decided to let the recruitment guys handle the wage-negotiations for me (because if I did I'd probably end up with less money), and after a few days they offered me a much better package with all the necessary perks.

So what started off as a really frustrating experience has paid major dividens in the end. Thanks again for all the advice guys.

Congrats! Hopefully things will work out. It always concerns me when people at the top lack respect for others. Kind of like the CEO treating a waiter badly...it shows some of their character. But if you don't report to this guy... that said, I've often heard the phrase "A fish rots at the Head."

I'd keep my eyes and ears open.
