Swiss celebrate digging world's longest tunnel Associated Press/AP Online By FRANK JORDANS SEDRUN, Switzerland - Workers hugged, cheered and set off fireworks as the huge drill broke through the last stretch of rock deep in the Swiss Alps. There was delight at the end of the tunnel - the world's longest - when it was completed Friday. The $10 billion, 35.4-mile (57-kilometer) tube will connect Europe's high-speed rail network and is part of a larger effort to cut in half the number of trucks - now at 1.2 million - that thunder through the Alps each year. The joy and pride felt throughout Switzerland over digging the Gotthard Base Tunnel reflected the one cause that unites the country's wealthy city dwellers with those living in traditional villages: Protecting the beauty of the mountains. "Together we risked a lot," said Swiss Transport Minister Moritz Leuenberger. "Together we achieved a lot." |
Happy belated birthday, Zooks! Hope it was a good one.

5-year-old Maine Coon sets new Guinness world record http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...longestcat.jpg RENO, Nev. — A cat in Reno has broken the Guinness world record for world's longest domestic cat. The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that a 5-year-old Maine Coon named Stewie was certified as the new record holder after measuring 48.5 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail bone. That's a little more than 4 feet long. The record was previously held by another Maine Coon that measured 48 inches. Stewie's owners, Robin Hendrickson and Erik Brandsness, said they decided to try for the record after hearing countless people say they were amazed by Stewie's length. Hendrickson said Maine Coons are known as "the gentle giants" of the cat world. |

Teeth marks can be a good thing, except maybe if you are in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy and they are visible from your revealing clothing.
Some shortest news for The Longest Thread: ROME - Just how mini can a miniskirt be? If an Italian mayor of a small Italian seaside town has his way, law enforcement officials, and not fashion gurus, will be the ones to decide. The conservative mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, Luigi Bobbio, says he wants to restore public decorum through a set of norms that include banning football games in public parks, blasphemy, and "very succinct clothes." The rules are expected to be approved by the city council on Monday. But what "very succinct" means is a matter of contention. The Italian press has interpreted the norms as meaning a ban on miniskirts, low-cut shirts and high heels. Bobbio told the AP that miniskirts and other provocative outfits will still be allowed as long as they are not too revealing. |

Just the last two stanzas from...
The Autumn by Elizabeth Barrett Browning The dearest hands that clasp our hands, -- Their presence may be o'er; The dearest voice that meets our ear, That tone may come no more! Youth fades; and then, the joys of youth, Which once refresh'd our mind, Shall come -- as, on those sighing woods, The chilling autumn wind. Hear not the wind -- view not the woods; Look out o'er vale and hill- In spring, the sky encircled them -- The sky is round them still. Come autumn's scathe -- come winter's cold -- Come change -- and human fate! Whatever prospect Heaven doth bound, Can ne'er be desolate. |

---------- Post added at 10:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:35 PM ---------- R.I.P., Fluffy :( Longest snake living in captivity dies in Ohio zoo COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio zoo said the longest snake living in captivity has died. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium said workers found the 24-foot python Wednesday morning dead from an apparent tumor. The snake, named Fluffy, held the Guinness World Record as the longest snake living in captivity. It was about as long as a moving van and as thick as a telephone pole. It weighed 300 pounds. The 18-year-old reticulated python had drawn large crowds since the zoo got it in 2007. Reticulated pythons are named for the cross-hatching patterns on their skin and average 10 to 20 feet long. The largest recorded one was 32 feet, 9 1/2 inches long when it was killed in 1912 in Indonesia. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...als/fluffy.jpg This undated photo released by the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, shows Fluffy, a reticulated python at the zoo. |

Betelgeuse seems embarrased, though I would be happy to be that large...relatively speaking.
Classified as a red supergiant, Betelgeuse is one of the largest and most luminous stars known. If it were at the center of our Solar System, its surface would extend past the asteroid belt possibly to the orbit of Jupiter and beyond, wholly engulfing Mercury, Venus, the Earth and Mars. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...Star-sizes.jpg |
Treasuries rose as the Federal Reserve asked bond dealers how asset purchases will influence yields, encouraging speculation policy makers remain open to large acquisitions as they try to spur the economy.
Benchmark 10-year notes advanced for the first time in seven days, ending the longest stretch of losses in two years and pushing the yield down from almost a one-month high. U.S. government debt fell yesterday as a Wall Street Journal story suggested that a Fed program bond dealers expect to be enacted next week to boost growth will be gradual. |

Guinness World Records Validates Longest Document Scan The Truper 3600, a low-volume production scanner, processed a continuous single-page document for one hour, 17 minutes, and 22 seconds. By Antone Gonsalves, InformationWeek February 29, 2008 ...a leap year report!!! The record for the longest document scan at nearly three-quarters of a mile has been set and certified, scanner manufacturer Bowe Bell & Howell on Friday said. The Truper 3600, a low-volume production scanner, was used to scan a document measuring 3,875 feet. A Guinness World Records judge validated the feat, which took one hour, 17 minutes, and 22 seconds, and was conducted Feb. 25 in Orlando, Fla., at the HIMSS Conference, the health care IT industry's largest annual event. In order to set the record, BBH had to perform an uninterrupted scan on a single page, storing the results in a continuous file. The original document had to be made out of paper. The document used was a custom-made fetal monitor strip. Gareth Deaves, a judge for Guinness World Records, traveled from London to validate the record. "We are pleased to recognize Bowe Bell and Howell as new Guinness World Record holders for the longest scanned document at 3,875 feet," Deaves said in a statement. "We congratulate everyone involved in this record-breaking achievement." |
Cool what we can say,
with certain impunity, thanks to no scanning. Isn't it? 23575! |
I wish and hope that everyone in the universe would scan what we say. If I say/do something you don't like, I dare you to talk to me about it, or if you prefer, just ban me. I haven't been banned in the longest time ...actually, never.

From a list of "Longest Construction Projects"...here's what could very well be the longest construction project in history,
that we know of, with some reasonable assumptions, and with some valid disagreeements possible: http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2.../greatwall.jpg Started over 2,000 years ago, and still being constructed during the 16th century A.D., the Great Wall was actually a series of walls constructed by different dynasties over the centuries. Stretching over 4,160 miles at its peak, the wall was guarded by over one million men, protecting the northern border of China against fearsome nomadic raiders. It is estimated that between two and three million men died during its construction. The Great Wall was as much a symbol of imperial power as it was an effective military tool, and is unrivaled to this day as the world’s longest construction project. Started: Circa 400 B.C. Completed: Circa A.D. 1600 Duration: 2,000 years |

There I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to me,
grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig. "Well, whatcha' gonna do about it?" he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears. "Come on, man," the biker says, "I didn't think you'd CRY. I can`t stand to see a man crying." "This is the worst day of my life," I say. "I'm a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don't have any insurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife with another man and then my dog bit me." "So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve; then you show up and drink the whole thing! But enough about me, how's your day going?" |
There must be a reason for all this.

Okay, I admit it~ I jumped to the end. I will say I read part of the first page but there is no way on God's green Earth that I'm going to even try to read this topic through.
As for the longest- what is the longest thread ever? Is there a goal, have you all surpassed it, is it even close, or did someone in the dark and lonely depths of past pages already say? I'll never know, I'm not going in there- it echoed. :paranoid: |
I have little idea of what you'd gather from this, but I'd recommend you look over Page 45 of TLTE! to glean at least the bitiest of infintesimal {infinitesimal} of an idea of what a few of us have strived to achieve, relate, and procure here, all in the name of the one goal (I guess).
(BTW: this was really the first thread I visited when I was a new member some time ago, and it stuck on me so much, I decided there was nothing beyond it [TFP]. IDW) |

Cat Eyes, the way it looks to me is that once upon a time, NoSoup got the brilliant idea that if he starts this thread and people keep adding to it, someday it might become the longest thread that ever existed. Considering all of the Internet, I know we're far from that goal. Within TFP we did reach that milestone although we are teetering on the brink of swapping places with the "word association" thread...so I might encourage you to ignore that thread and help us in this thread to maintain our slim lead. Or if you're one of those who must support the underdog, I understand, but fuck you. Some of us, me included, have taken to posting about "things that are the longest" just to add a bit of interest to this thread, as if anybody other than you and me actually reads this thread. best regards, Your friend, BadNick |
