I wonder in what context this would make sense? (previous post)
http://img.ffffound.com/static-data/...7b48e2c1_m.jpg |
How about: very cute young girl, but very self-effacing and/or with low self-esteem, feels that mother nature has not done right by her. ?
Maybe she needs a good man ...or boy in her case ;) Or in that case, how about: her boyfriend let her down and now she's dissapointed that she let her raging hormones get the best of her and compromise her initial good instincts. ? |
Dear Mother Nature,
if you'll start lying to me, I'll drop the pretense. |
Pubescent angst.
|
My longest nose is enough that I can smell teen spirit when I see it. Nevermind.
|
Bless the sense of smell.
Even unaware, it feels, & can't be ignored. |
It seems our noses are more directly connected to our brains than is visible on our faces. Otherwise, evolution may have dispensed with us long ago ..or even longest ago.
|
Jacobson's Organ.
I had a pic of one....somewhere. I'll try to ferret it out. |
"And, of course, that is what all of this is - all of this: the one song, ever changing, ever reincarnated, that speaks somehow from and to and for that which is ineffable within us and without us, that is both prayer and deliverance, folly and wisdom, that inspires us to dance or smile or simply to go on, senselessly, incomprehensibly, beatifically, in the face of mortality and the truth that our lives are more ill-writ, ill-rhymed and fleeting than any song, except perhaps those songs - that song, endlesly reincarnated - born of that truth, be it the moon and June of that truth, or the wordless blue moan, or the rotgut or the elegant poetry of it. That nameless black-hulled ship of Ulysses, that long black train, that Terraplane, that mystery train, that Rocket '88', that Buick 6 - same journey, same miracle, same end and endlessness."
—Nick Tosches, 'Where Dead Voices Gather' |
The road goes ever on....
|
Then in agreement
comes forth camaraderie; better than conflict. |
Thanks, Jet.
I can especially personally relate to the "born...June" and "rotgut poetry" parts. In the meantime, I'm just trying to get in as many miles as I can before the end of the road, and enjoy the trip as much as I can. Fleeting it is. |
You are trying to trip me up, I believe, with the tie-ins; what comes after Pisces? (The Ram; what is it called - Libra?) I think that is what you are (fiddlesticks, that is your "join date").
Well, among my many other diversions today (none of them being audible, tho, save for Pac-Man's chomping) I had a good ten minutes reviewing this page: http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/quotes.asp I hope you enjoy it, too. |
Thank you, Jet!
I'm not just saying this to appease you, but I found those quotation mark rules informative and reassuring. I have actually questioned my own use of quotation marks quite a few times and this clears up my main questions. |
I appeciate you actually stating you said this not to appease me, but you acknowledged and accepted its teachings. I do feel a bit needy here, don't I? Such comes the price for sharing.
I don't know how nuns can be so selfless. I want to be thanked, and hear it as such, from time to time. And speaking of which, (a few pages back) on the medley and tune of Orpheus in Hades; I think this is actually the basis for the 'Can-Can', would you not agree? |
hmmm, that Can-Can thing I have to go revisit. I don't remember.
Now that I noticed I forgot to thank you for your quotation mark guidance, I went back and edited it in, since I meant to say that. Thank you. If only life were so simple and we could go back and edit it to correct or change things....ahhhhh. |
I've been meaning to work on a new theory on that sort of thing, but then that would factor in working on time traveling, and without yet perfecting my new "perfect" calendar, (of which I found some old kinks in the machine again) it'll still be some time before I'll revisit the notes of whether or not it is possible to back in time, even if just for 12 seconds (or more, depending on height, weight, age).
I missed my deadline for starting it again. I've got too much on my plate; and I'm still hungry for more (diversity). I think it's been exactly 12 years and counting since I told myself to buy a new camera (canoe, parakeet, etc.) and I have yet to allow this to come to fruition. I'm pitiful. Procrastination will soon become a new entry for the medical dictionary, I predict. |
For time is the longest distance between two places.
Tennessee Williams Death the last voyage, the longest, and the best. Tom Wolfe I like the Tennesee one, and not just because Davy Crockett was born there, on a mountain top. But that Tom guy, I don't know about that one. |
Who, truly, knows?

I like being bugged
'cuz it's better than pain is as an impetus. "Rules"! As they're stated, "a,b,c," they're made to be broken. ((2+2)/8)x2=1 |
Very astute, Ocm?. <<< oh, oh. I just got paranoid about having a period after a question mark. I'm sure that's a rule somwhere.
As you say, Ocm?, why would anyone even make a rule unless they expected it to be broken? I mean if you knew for absolutely sure that no one would ever break a rule, why would you even make that rule? Would there be a point for such a rule? |
To have precedence. That's the entire basis for our current culture and studies of the histories.
I'd recommend you reading this and giving your thoughts on the article, but then again, no. Nobody would reply to you because it is within a topic of mine, so you would be an extension of my insignicant thoughts, and there is an unwritten "rule" instated outside these confines and everywhere else here that I am to be avoided, and made to feel invisible. Perhaps I'm just being the paranoid one now, but nevertheless, it's working. :( (first/last smilie usage for this month) |
I had a couple contributions to your list thread. As far as that Mr. Semiotician, my revolting nature says I don't need no stinkin' signs, they just block my view.

Sign of the times?
(I'll probably get back into finding and discovering semi-topical images to post, instead of pondering the melancholy unnecessities.) |
I collect my mother's lists, for a few reasons.
1: Her longhand penmanship is beautiful. 2: They are quaint & telling time capsules of her thought processes. 3: I enjoy reading her jumbled lists. On one list she will have grocery items, books that she wants to read, articles from magazines she wants to share, & household chores that need to be done..etc. Sometimes, when I make lists, I'll go for the, Im Grat. Listing a few endeavors that have already been accomplished, and placing a check mark next to them, provides some sense of completion & control, if I'm feeling particularly tasked. I bookmarked that article. I listed it for Mother to read. |

I'm very good at hiding things in plain sight, I notice. Good things, I hope.
I'm also very good (bad?) at forgetting recent statements and goal-oriented ponderances, (I'm done with words.) I've noticed. I really liked your statement about the butterfly net; I've got to figure out where to use it next, and in what context. I believe it fit well into this thoughtful reading I did yesterday... excerpt: Quote:

I recall talking with a wise old woman.
She also had similar sentiments, especially when dealing with the overwhelming feeling of helplessness that can occur, when we have at our fingertips, the entire world's woe & suffering. She helped me to understand that all any of us can change or influence, are the few people that surround our daily lives. One person at a time. Otherwise, the notion of attempting to fix or even comprehend the big picture, leaves one's energies scattered, ineffectual & prone towards depression. That shutting down action. |
Still speaking of life's journeys and thoughts... I found this webcomic I came across a while ago, already shared, but looking back upon, I think it to be really, really relatable towards, (in the fashion of laughing while stop/stuttering to ponder the meaning of it all) once digging into the sub-context of the inference of where it resoluted(sp?).
I think it is the best one I've shared (or seen) this past month. Quote:

ahhh, the mammaries. When the boys were little I came home from work and on most nice days we'd all head down to the playground and hang around there playing for hours or maybe go for a hike. Now they'd rather hang around with their friends. But I still have the mammaries at home....thanks, dear.

Not to garner all of your best birthday wishes, though there's nothing wrong with that either, but I'm adding that my first 61 years have not seemed like the longest ride...it sort of blew by so fast I can hardly believe it. I clearly remember being 3 years old and running after my father, crying, as he rode off on his bicycle going to work...I mean I was crying, though it wouldn't surprise me if he also had a tear. |
Is it your birthday?
If so have a happy one, onwards & upwards! |
yes. Thanks, bud. I feel about the same as last year, except a year better.

Searched for car cake.

...sorry unc, gotta withdraw this one and transfer all my thanfulness to dear ring
ring, that's a beautiful cake! Thank you. But those apple dumplings, still warm inside, with some melty vanilla ice cream on top, starting to form a little moat of vanilla cream around each one....that's more my speed. Jet, thanks for such a personally gratifying birthday greeting. However, I doubt I can skip the soup since that's one of my favorites. |
Ah, so was it a coincidence that I posted something about the "birthday skeleton" just days before? I'm finally ahead of the curve!
(And I'm sure you meant ring, but the unc just slipped out, right?) |
All us old folk look alike?
Birthday Skelly doesn't worry about gaining weight. On a randomer note: I picked up a hitchhiker this afternoon. |
What did you steal from him (after you both parted ways, I'm assuming)? I think the common courtesy in Cuba, Somalia and Belarus is an exchange of fruits for the helping hand.
For BadNick: Natalia Vodianova Nude, for LOVE Magazine, Photography by Mert & Marcus (I think the title says it all. Addtionally, the last pic, too.) |
He thanked me sincerely, after I dropped him off at his house.

ring,
thank you for your nice wishes and motorhead cake for me...sorry I misread the source. Jet, that Natalia girl is beautiful...eyes, luscious lips, sexy bushy eyebrows. But I would like to take her out to dinner and put a few pounds on her. She could use a bit more fullness in her body...my humble opinion. |
I think the Russian women are just naturally tall, blonde and svelte, as a generality.
I've been looking up her photo sessions for the past few hours just trying to find that ONE photograph I lost yesterday (monochrome photo, short dress, maybe with a bow pattern in front; looks like a schoolgirl), but I can't find it. Needless to say, I've seen her quite a bit, and she is curvy and bosomy when she wants to be (I think she started modeling as early as 2002, and still, still might be in her 20s. That amazes me.) Random thought: does anybody else in this world (or thread) admire Patrick Warburton as much as I? I hear his voice everywhere, and in a sense, he IS everywhere. He still looks the same, which is incredible in and of itself. |
Gotta be careful
with those generalities since they ease thinking. (Warburton:)) |

The Invisible Edge: May 2010
I discovered this from a link in one of Jetee's posts elsewhere. Can't remember which one. |
I don't remember what made me scrawl this either:

No, not exactly;
just a random acquaintance, quite pitiable. & frankly no fun to talk to, but I found humor in his carni statement. |

Hi, Nick.
Any cake left? My mother's neighbor made us some banana bread. Weekends & holidays are very quiet here at TFP. It's good evidence that people have lives. |
It could be circumstantial,
but I think we must consider well that dead folks cannot post here. |
You keep bringing it back... and I find it just a bit disheartening that poltergeists cannot properly utilize technology (though, some horror films, namely a few Polish & Japanese ones, would have you think otherwise).
could I please see a show of hands of those that may like to see that topic about "History of Sayings" be brought forth and started today? I'll need some help with it, though, because I have not yet come to find one all-encompassing resource (ie, website/blog) that has meandered into, and dedicated themselves to thi aim. I think the first phrase I should try to track down the origins to is "the Ghost in the Machine". PS (this topic of mine has stayed in the back of mind for over four years now, when just by happenstance, I noticed on the shelf of my fairly attractive psychology professor friend's bookcase a dusty old book that had very antiquated relics of speech, and where and when they came into the popular vernacular of casual conversations amongst English practioners. The only entry I read in the book was something about a saying on candles, or the light from them, I think, before I hastily put it back in its place. With my fondness for knowledge, I'm not sure why I didn't just "borrow" the book at the time.) |
The ghost in the machine distinguished the mind from the body - said to have been coined by Gilbert Ryle in 1949. I wonder about the nature of memory, often, but that one was in there, so I'll wonder again.
|
Finding one all-encompassing source? No, while desirable, highly unlikely.
That's a superb idea for a thread, and I believe numerous people would enjoy adding their contributions. "What is the origin of "get a life"? (Etymology) ...getting a life might have originally had something to do with getting another life as in the video games when your little guys got knocked off. I used to hear kids asking how many lives the other guy had left, etc. I'll 'get a life' if I ... So the expression or words 'get a life' could have fist appeared, in the 80's, but not quite with its present connotations. It may next (or concurrently) have begun to be used by computer geeks who would spend hours on end at their terminals, and their PC became their life. They would be told kiddingly, or not so kiddingly, by friends, family, and other hackers to 'get a life.' No definite documentation or dates for this, however. The first big-time use of the word in the media was in a 1987 Saturday Night Live skit in which William Shatner, Captain Kirk of Star Trek, does a parody on Trekkie fans. In the sketch, he is the guest of honor at a Star Trek convention. He is asked by fanatical fans wearing pointy ears, several trivia questions concerning the exact combinations of safes he had opened on various episodes (e.g. what was the combination to the safe in episode #38?). He tells these people at the end of the skit to 'move out of your mothers basement' and GET A LIFE... From the American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms get a life Acquire some interests or relationships of one's own. For example, Stop sitting around and complaining-get a life. [Slang; late 1900s] From the Jargon Dictionary: Get a life! imperative. Hacker-standard way of suggesting that the person to whom it is directed has succumbed to terminal geekdom (see computer geek). Often heard on Usenet, esp. as a way of suggesting that the target is taking some obscure issue of theology too seriously. This exhortation was popularized by William Shatner on a 1987 "Saturday Night Live" episode in a speech that ended "Get a life!", but some respondents believe it to have been in use before then. It was certainly in wide use among hackers for years before achieving mainstream currency via the sitcom "Get A Life" in 1990. (extracts from the "Wordwizard" site) http://www.wordwizard.com/indexcommunity.htm Oh, and OCM? took my bait and ran with it. |
Very nice. Very nearly left me speechless, but here I am responding.
I'll be back in a bit, and hopefully, probably, and with good luck timing on my side, I'll hash out the details, forewords and whatever else I believe I may need to start the topic and get it spinning (like a top... I used to love tops) from here on out. Additionally, I think I'll get my threads pertinent to, and about: "The Red Button" and "Film Trailers" out of the way tonight as well. Last word: I'm not very creative at thinking up good thread titles, and I have a certain predilection that I don't start threads without one in mind; so, do you think that "The History of Sayings" is as good as it gets, or do you have any ideas to rearranging the title so it fits perfectly with the premise? I'm all ears for any suggestions. (like should 'coined' appear in the title, or the thread's opening description?) |
"Idioms, Phrases & Sayings, Oh My." (Too cutesy?)

hi everyone. Our neighborhood is also quite quiet on weekends during summer. Many seem to leave to go to the shore or up the mountains, which is a perfect reason for me to stay here. Our borough is having their fireworks tomorrow and they are usually some of the best around here, not to mention they let you sit really really close.
ring, I'm saving the last piece of cake for a midnight snack tonight, with a cold glass of milk...I'm sprinkling fresh blueberries all over it since I have a couple pints, a very sweet batch. Thanks again. |
When we were younger,
weekend exodus we did, attempting escape. Being in town on the weekends is often more peaceful than campgrounds or traffic or in-laws, so in retrospect it seems it might have been a silly practice to join the crowd so often. |
Darn. I'm really, really late.
I'll have to buckle down and work to see if I can create those three threads in time. Leave you this to read and muse upon, while you wait to see where they may (eventually) pop up: Glossary / Info / FAQ’s The Inner Realms |

Why are you hypnotized, Nick? That article? Did you read the whole thing? It looked pretty long; I think i only glanced at four words and two pictures, realized it might be share-worthy, shared it, and then afterwards, thought to sit down and read about it.
Did you learn something worthwhile, then? Discuss with the class. |
I wonder if the clown has ever fallen in? He is very close to the edge of the harbour...

Another coincidence. I recently was re-clued into what NLP is, and its usage in modern-day examples, but I've forgotten where exaclty I saw it last. It was within the past few days, that much I know.
