"In order to be effective a doctrine must not be understood, but has to be believed in. We can be absolutely certain only about things we do not understand."
"The uncompromising attitude is more indicative of an inner uncertainty than a deep conviction. The implacable stand is directed more against the doubt within than the assailant without." The True Believer, by Eric Hoffer (adjusted the size of the font slighty, so it's not unbearably straining to the viewer.) |

Garamond. (I only guessed at it, since Willravel's siggy is so small, it was hard to tell definitively.) |
Also a quick mental note: It is getting increasingly harder and more frustrating to feature new selections for my current endeavor when nearly of my music albums are either in vinyl, or in online storage facilities; either way, both extraction methods are too much of a hassle to properly use if I only need that one song.
Plus, I only own / know about less than 5 dozen sparsely different albums, so finding stuff that I've never heard about is no problem, really, save for the fact that I don't like to get out of my box often enough to realize this. Hopefully, though, now that I've downloaded the song from my ipod, then may I find the time to re-upload it to the web, preferably to a hosting site I can depend upon to not take an hour-two weeks to actually finalize the linking process. Appeasing one's self is never easy, I always come to find out. Praying before 8 do I let it go live. |
It is easier on the eyes.
Peaking or peeking. It's amazing to watch OCM? drive down a busy street, carrying on a conversation, commenting on every billboard, left & right, and simultaneously changing the radio station. If my filters are not working, the chaos is painful. You replicated again.....you. |
well, at 8 past the hour, finally, did I find out the upload was successful.
Still straining. I need a rest from the waiting. Now all that there is left to do is ponder up, and then, research the history and context of the tune; then post. (It's a live covered peformance, by the way, if an artist, whom I'm guessing, is the 'greatest' example of one makes at least half of her living this way.) So, I've still got 2/3 of the ways to go. This is not dandy. (I'm probably going to sneak in a game of Pac-Man before I get to it, tho.) |
I meant 'of'. Additionally, backtracking, then: I meant 'when'. It's not always easy catching up with one's stream of consciousness typing, y'know (the typos?).
'Long as I'm here, a question: say you were me, and wanted the audience (TFP) to help you scavenge something up, a photograph; where would you most likely think it be the best place to ask? I have seemed to misplace this very specific piece of a near-monochromatic image (but not fully) of a topless young girl, (you can barely she is, tho, because, well other than her size, she is also quite pale) with white hair, emphatically smiling on what I think I can recall to be a beach setting, upon her towel, sitting up, and flashing me the righteous 'thumbs up'. I spent about an hour this morning tidying up my dA account, and because i didn't know when you "un-fav" an image that it is also removed from your personal sets, I might have misplaced and dropped a few of my accumulated finds. This was one of them. And if I need mention it, I'm quite sure the photograph was a deviantart original submission. It sucks knowing of something, but not knowing where to find it again. I believe the terse yet ubiquitous all-around meaning (meaning: it has lost its "meaning") of 'I think' will become, or it has already breached that line, of becoming a lost, hackneyed and grating expression (much with the same as 'you know', which I absolutely abhor hearing in any sort of social conversing session). Oh yes. My 'out of sorts' & cranky moment, has passed over.
Brushing up on word & phrase origins, is therapeutic. "Q From Ron Vaughn: Where does the expression out of sorts come from? What are sorts in this context? My wife accuses me of this malady and I know what she means, but I don’t know why I know. A English idioms are often extremely puzzling and their origins are notoriously difficult to track down. So people invent all kinds of yarns to make sense of them. The most common story about this phrase refers to the printer’s word sorts for the individual metal characters in his boxes of type, so called because they have been arranged, each into its own compartment, with all of one kind together. It would obviously be a substantial inconvenience if a printer were to run out of a sort during composition. The problem with this story is that the figurative expression out of sorts is recorded much earlier than the printers’ term; the first recorded use of it for printers’ type in the big Oxford English Dictionary is from as late as 1784, from Benjamin Franklin: “The founts, too, must be very scanty, or strangely out of sorts”. It would seem he was attaching an already well-known idiom to the printer’s trade, not the other way around. A second idea is that it has something to do with playing cards. A pack that hasn’t been shuffled is said to be out of sort and not suitable for playing with. The problem with this is that the OED doesn’t give any example of its being used in this connection, which it surely would if the expression had been common. The Latin original of our word sort was applied to a piece of wood that was used for drawing lots. Later, still in Latin, it developed into the idea of one’s fate, fortune or condition. This was the first meaning of sort in English, in the thirteenth century. It survived until shortly after Shakespeare’s time, until about the point that out of sorts is first found. But sort soon evolved another meaning in English that related to rank, order, or class. It was used to describe people, especially their qualities or standing. There were once phrases such as of sort that implied high quality or rank. Others that we still use today, such as of your own sort, the right sort, or of all sorts, evolved out of the same idea. It would seem out of sorts developed from this idea of quality (lack of it in this case), perhaps influenced by the other meaning of fate or one’s lot in life, so implying that fortune wasn’t smiling on one, or that all wasn’t well." |
It's complicated,

Verbal jousts are nice at times, but when you (meaning: me) keep offending and somehow "rubbing-a-dubbing" a few females the wrong way, I have to wonder, is it all just misplaced context, or do I come off being perceived as a condescending twit? I am recalling a previous member who always seemed so serious all the time, and at the moment of apex, he ofered up the sugestion of using more "smileys" to get across his point better (which is ludicrous) but it seemed to work out for a while. No one got on his case. Am I missing those ubiquitous, lost-meaning faces to elocute my contentions now?
I go to great lengths to sound absolutely neutral at all times, and pardon my way of writing style by never thinking afore-hand, as this is a stream-of-consciousness effort on my part, but this is how I actually speak in reality as well. It goes nowhere to say "you misunderstood me" because I've offended their sensiblities in questioning why this point is a relevant one in the first place, and I try to provide insight by thought expansion. Is this a rant? I get too easily lured into these, by own making. Back to basics, I need to start at least one new thread today, if not a two-fer; so, I ask, which of these thread titles appeals to you the most? Hopefully I get two congruent replies before 9pm NYC Standard time. Camera holding lying down game Modern Life is Rubbish TFP Aquarium TFP Zoo (I hate this title, but it will be the Animals Thread, Pt. 2, sans the LOLs, sexual innuendos and the ilk) Destinations The Red Button Partial Symmetry (incompleted) AUTO History of Pez (probably the most likely one to be started today) HIstory of Sayings Architecture / Design Thread Glasses (I think this is referring to 'sexy chicks with glasses; there's only one link in the queue, so not a likely starter) Bodypainting |
I'm trying to recall the instances you speak of.
Perhaps when you begin a reply with: "Not to be snippy here." The next poster may well decide, "I'm on the defensive, cuz he's going to get snippy." When in fact your intentions were exactly the opposite. But, by mentioning that fact, up front, that your post could be offensive, that puts the idea, 'offensive' at the forefront of the reader's mind. I'm just brainstorming here...that's all. I'm curious to what 'the lying down game' might entail. |

Switch Places!
I honestly try not to give up any contextual spoilers to what I have in mind for any post of mine, but when other members just quote the first five words I state, or place me in a virtual headlock over parenthetical, silly thoughts I just included to give you a piece of my mind as I was jotting down this post, it doesn't serve me well to ever voice an opinion again if the 3 second snippet is taken, and the other 30 minutes I spent composing is trashed. Maybe it's the everything you say, I'll think the opposite mentality that the internet has bred? THIS is why I have such a contempt for sarcasm (and also, I don't understand it half the time either).
That's why I mostly curtailed my involvement in general discussion. It's too hard to keep up with the joneses, and actually be let alone to be serious. The lying down game was a post and thematic expression idea I received from a Polish forum/blog (I think everything is a blog nowadays). I'd give an example of it, but again, that would be "contextually-spoiling" its awesome premise (first use of the A-word this month). |

(one flew over the rainbow) by batiks In this case, I used parentheses (see above) to substitute a photograph's title that was never really there, or marked as "untitled", so I casually went ahead and supplanted my own "feel" to what it could have been. After reading what square brackets were mostly about (in literature, not mathematics) on th previosu page, I am wondering if I should eschew and abandon the curves, and go for squares instead? I wonder if a TFP meet-up would be be more or less successful if there was a promise to play some kickball thrown into the foray. |
Around here if you kick the balls they call it "mountain pool". I suppose that's to make fun of the mountain folks for some strange reason...maybe insecure city folks. In any case, I believe the official rules are you have to keep at least one foot on the ground.
