Hellboy
Anyone see it? I saw it last night. It was VERY interesting. I don't know if I like it or not (yet). I need to think about it for a while. The action scenes were decent, not the best, but they were good enough. The acting was EXCELLENT. That's where the movie shines. Perlman gives obnoxiously not-funny one-liners every 5 seconds during the action scenes. These are actually so not-funny that they end up being funny. Like an FBI agent runs out in front of a truck, and Hellboy jumps over in front of the truck and goes "RED MEANS STOP!" and punches the front of the truck making it do a flip over top of them. True comedy.
Perlman is great as Hellboy (I think). The reason I say "I think" is because I don't know anything about Hellboy at all. So I guess that's how he is supposed to act. I know that by the end of the movie you don't see the makeup anymore or the redicilous arm. You see a troubled freak. Graphics: For the most part, very good. Some of the parts were "iffy," but none of them were just bad. Conclusion: I liked it, but it's not for people who don't read comics (or didn't read comics at one point). The last 1/3 of the movie concentrates on the comic-aspect of the series, leaving regular plotlines behind. I recommend it for open-minded people.

I saw it last night too, and I thought it was pretty damn cool.
I went to the comic book store and broke the "THIS IS NOT A LIBRARY" rule and read a few issues of Hellboy. It matches up pretty well.

I loved it. It got the feel of the comic perfectly. The kind of dry humor is what makes Hellboy so great. The random quips and jokes while fighting is how the fights in Spider-man should have been. Sure it was a little anti-climactic, but I can look past that to give this movie around a 3/5--4/5

I had never heard of Hellboy before the movie, so my opinion is based on just a movie, not preconcieved notions of what I should have been expecting.
Bottom line: I thought the movie was entertaining and worth seeing. Would I see it again? Nah. The special effects were pretty cool, the acting was fine. Character development? I thought that might have been a little lacking, but I'll just assume this was meant to be an action flick. There are a few romance scenes which drag ass... Probably mean more to the comic-reading crowd than the know-nothing viewer. I felt that about halfway in to the film, it stopped getting deeper into the characters and the momentum or tension of the movie didn't raise anymore. Sure it didn't drop off... but it just flatlined at like 80% instead of ramping up to a good climax. So basically I thought the movie started out awesome and fast, but somewhere in the middle it lost its way and ended up mediocre. Perhaps your best bet is to watch the first half, and then leave while your blood is still pumping and make up your own ending |

Also, while in the comics finding a vast underground dungeon with gigantic mantraps that goes on for miles under an obscure ceremony isn't anything to remark on, in a movie, well, it's a little ridiculous. Or maybe I'm just disappointed because the movie peaked in the first ten minutes. Occult Nazis trying to breach the barrier into the hell dimension in the middle of a firefight with G.I.s? What's not to like :-). Coulda been great, but turned out to be just an okay popcorn movie. Not that there's anything wrong with that. On the other hand, the trailer for Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow was brilliant. |

Hellboy was great. Ron pearlman was perfect. I own 1-2 hellboy comics, I don't know how, because I don't remember buying them or anyone giving them to me, anyways...
The movie was one of the best comic book movies I've seen, stand alone, or when compared to their comic counterparts. I did notice alot of scenes were cut short. Hopefully the DVD will have alot of extended scenes. The humor was great, I thought. The "red means stop" was kinda silly, but when he's spying on liz and john's coffee date, He's hilarious, and he's showing how human his character is at the same time. I think that was a great scene.

I haven't seen Hellboy yet, but I want to. I know nothing about the comic, so I don't know if that will make the movie better or worse.
Not that this is a surprise at all, but it looks like the chances of a sequel are pretty good: http://www.themoviebox.net/php/news/...t_from=&ucat=& Quote:

woo for more hellboy. i went and saw it the other day for shits and giggles, i didn't have any previous knowledge of the series, but i really liked what i saw. the effects were very good, and i appreciate the fact that they didn't kill the movie with overdone CG. fun stuff all around.

1) Are you a comic book fan? If not then why do you care? Comic book fans, like me, want to see the characters on the big screen. 2) What comic book movies have you seen? Ya Captain America blows, as did Steel, and many of the later Batman and Superman movies BUT the first two Superman movies did not blow. They were great and it didnt matter if you were a comic fan or not. Spider-man didnt blow, neither did the original Batman. X-men and X2 were both quite good. Saying that all comic movies blow is like saying that all comedies blow or all sci-fi movies blow. Sure some do, but in every genre theres the good and the bad.

Meh. I like Perlman, but the last half of the movie just dragged ass. They need to stop making 2 hour long comic book movies. Fer crying out loud.

I believe some studio has picked up Watchmen to be made into a movie, which has me excited. If you are not familiar with Watchmen, you must read it - even if you don't like comic books, it is one of those comics that is just so damn good and important.
From Hell and Road to Perdition are also the best comic book movies ^_^ |

Dear god I dont want a Watchmen movie. It'll be butchered.
The series is 12 issues long and each part is integral to the plot. Unless they intend to make it as a trilogy, it will suck.

just saw HellBoy last night.. Have to say.. It rocked..
They picked the right actors, they did a good job on the backstory, the action was just right, and they got alot of good humor in without making it cheesy.,. my favorite part is the fact they put HellBoy comics in to which HB replies "I hate those, they never get the eyes right" I recommend it highly to comics book fans, and people who have never picked one up Edit: Ron Perlman is also my hero now after looking through his bio on IMDB. He does comics book movies, he does action movies, and he's been in some of my favorite video games (narrarator's voice in Fallout top on that list.. Now all I can hear is HellBoy saying "war.. war never changes")

Ok, there were two things abou tthis film that kind of irked me:
1. The lack of background on the characters. The relationship between broom and hellboy? hellboy and liz? And how about the bad guys? 2. For some reason, the quips reminded by of Buffy the Vampire Slayer...I'll probably get reamed for saying that, but hey, they did. Other than those things, I thought it was good.

All in all it was a great movie, the pure visuals of the bright red HB character in the hi-contrast enviroments was worth it for me. But thankfully there was a lot more to it than that.
