I have not read the comics, so I too felt that the backstory seemed a little thin. However, the relationship between HB and Broom was pretty clear; father and son. The thing with Liz seemed a little 'tacked on' but I'd have to ask someone who is familiar with the comics to see if that is a hollywood adaptation, I'd guess that it is.
All in all it was a great movie, the pure visuals of the bright red HB character in the hi-contrast enviroments was worth it for me. But thankfully there was a lot more to it than that.
