I haven't seen Hellboy yet, but I want to. I know nothing about the comic, so I don't know if that will make the movie better or worse.
Not that this is a surprise at all, but it looks like the chances of a sequel are pretty good:

While channel surfing the tv I caught a glance at Ron Perlman promoting Hellboy on ESPN's "Best Damn Sports Show," in which the film has just took tops at this weekend's box office.
Right off the bat, host / actor Tom Arnold asked Perlman about the possibility of a Hellboy sequel.
Perlman replied, "Ah .. we got the news this morning, and god willing ... ah and if he (del Toro) could write a decent script ... Boom! And I'm sure he will"
Hellboy, which tells the story of a demon risen from flames of hell but raised to fight monsters and evil creatures, recently took in $23 million this weekend beating out The Rock's actioner "Walking Tall."
Writer-director Guillermo del Toro has said he would love to make another "Hellboy" movie. Hellboy has been a "dream" project for the Mexican helmer. Currently he is attached to another dream project of his, H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" at DreamWorks.
