I just saw Spartan yesterday and while I too thought the storyline faulty (not enough reason to care about the abducted girl...just for starters) I don't see how you liked the dialogue!! All the lines were like 'hmmm lemme throw out some hard ass spy words so it pumps the movie up and gets you into it.' But the director purposely didn't want to give you enough to get into it. Like he wanted to just keep everything in the dark until his 'tada'. I'd give it a 6/10.
-- Anyways I did see Mystic River today (mostly because I was bored and it scored the highest on that tomato movie page for current movies). Man was I disappointed. The character types were over played and even their actors had done similar roles. Tim Robbins being mentally awry after a tramautic experience?? Hmm a little like JACOB'S LADDER!! Sean Penn vowing to revenge the death of a child...well holy crap, he just did that in 21 Grams !!! Kevin Bacon a cop??? NO WAYY! My personal fave was Laurence Fishburne being the ONLY BLACK in the entire movie and his name is "Whitey Powers" you just can't make this stuff up folks. Anyways the movie feels drawn out and uncut and way too filled with the brim with coincidences. The entire movie hinges on people finding things out just seconds too late, and with the main cast living in the same neighborhood as they did when they were children (riiiiiiight). The ending is weak and anti-climatic, especially the unnecessary parade scene (what was the point of that???). 6/10 --only because it's like a decent Law&Order episode with some big names in it. chinese ghost story 2 : (dvd) . campy movie i really enjoy. it's silly, has cheap & dated fx but i just like it. it awakes the little kid in me. 7/10
parasite dolls : manga trilogy which i found utterly boring, i fell asleep. avoidable 3/10 sky high : the latest movie by Ryuhei Kitamura, shown in world premiere , in presence of the director !!!! The public went crazy (Brussels Fantasy Festival) . He was a very sympathic guy, spent a long time with the picture & autograph hunters. The movie itself lacked the kinetic vibe of Versus, but we got more story , more romance & more acting in return. not as good as versus though, some rushed parts (bad lighting, cheap feel) still interesting 7/10 wonderfull days : korean manga that mixed 2d - 3d & maquettes to achieve a truly superb visual style. the story was very simple, but i enjoyed it. also great use of music. must see !!! i'm already tracking the dvd for this. 8/10

Sex and Lucia. 3/5
It started off good, but then lost it's edge. It got kind of confusing mid-way through, trying to keep track of all the stories. The acting didn't blow me away either. The cinematography was good though, beautiful colors.

I just got back from seeing Gothika. I didn't go in with high expectations, and saw a very good thriller with a pretty stupid anticlimax at the end of it. Cut out the last fifteen minutes, add a +1 super bonus point for having Halle Berry on-screen most of the time, and you've got a 4/5 movie.

goodbye lenin : funny movie about a son trying to hide the fall of the berlin wall from his mother who was in a coma during the change of the DDR. 7/10

I loved this movie. Such an original piece of work and brilliant acting by both Carrey and Winslet. Charlie Kaufman wrote it and if you'll be able to tell if you're at all familiar with some of his past work like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. I give it 9/10 There's so many little things in this movie I can't wait till it's released on dvd so I can watch it again.

Just saw The Lady Killers last night. Wasn't overly impressed. It was generally funny throughout the movie, and it had its moments, but overall, I was pretty disappointed. Tom Hanks accent/character started to get old pretty quickly, but I guess I would consider it an "ok" movie. 3.5/5 stars.

HOTK is awesome. The sequel, titled "The Devil's Rejects" is due out this year sometime (hopefully). It's in pre-production now.
Dawn of the Dead remake... very awesome. Loved the ending, the one that half the people in the audience missed because they walked out as the credits started. I just don't understand why it was named after Romero's Dawn of the Dead. The original was a sequel, so when it started off, the zombie epidemic already plauged the nation. Honestly, this movie could've been named something completely different, as it didn't remotely follow suit as a sequel to Night of the Living Dead (original or remake). ..but that's just piddly nitpicky stuff. Other than that: Grade A zombie horror.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - 4.5/5
Awesome. Thats the only way I can describe it. Absolutely wonderful. There was one subplot that was totally unnecessary, which keeps it from a five, but other than that, one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

it was inevitable. I knew it was going to happen eventually. I rented Freddy vs. Jason, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but still pretty terrible. It took an interesting turn from the repetitive garbage I was expecting when Freddy used the tranqs to bring Jason into the dream world.
I'd give it a 5.5/10

The Rundown, it wasn't the most.... sophisticated of movies. But I'd hate to say it, it did achieve it's purpose of making a good cheesy action movie. Plus Sean William Scott got the crap kicked out of him... The Rock was ok, Rosario Dawson is hot, and the little rebel guys were awesome.
I give it a 7 out of 10. |

Hellboy -- 6 out of 10. Great visuals, good acting and character development by Ron Perlman in the title role, and some nice scenes here and there, but the run-run-chase-chase plot just left me yawning after a while. Lots of blood and guts and Lovecraftian monsters, but sadly, not enough thrills.
First 10 minutes are great, too. |

Touching the Void - A true story about a mountain climbing accident where someone with a broken leg fell down a cliff into a crevasse and was left for dead, but then managed to climb/crawl his way back to the base camp with no water (and no food) for a couple of days.
I give it a 7 out of 10. I had just finished reading the book and they left a few crucial things out of the events that ruined it for me.

Jumanji (hey, it was the only thing on TV in English last night...)
awful, 3 out of ten (1 for Robin Williams, who at least showed up; a second for the animal effects, which were at least revolutionary for the time, and 1 point for being the only English program on TV last night.)
