Hair Dye
Ok Ladies, well I've been working as a lifeguard this past summer and the sun has done some awful bleaching on my hair. So I've been thinking for a while that it would be good to dye it for my natural look again. Well...I think I made a big mistake. The color I picked was chocolate cherry, unfortunately it turned out alot more cherry than I thought.
So now I need to change it. This is only the second time I've dyed my hair. I really don't want to bleach it because I have very fine hair, just a lot of it. So tomorrow, I'm going to get some color remover without bleach and try again. Figures I would botch it before going to visit James! |

I've done this before. Red is really tricky. I tried to dye mine auburn and it turned out fire engine red!
Since you want to go brown, why don't you just by a box without any red in it? Just a natural brown. It's what I did, and it actually turned out the color I wanted. The red will give it that cherry-chocolate color you wanted. Color removers/strippers are aweful for your hair. Last edited by Jenna; 09-24-2007 at 04:08 PM.. |

I've been known to double die my hair with store bought dye and its never hurt it. I agree with the above....go get just regular brown (in which ever shade you want) and re do it. Stripping it is only going to kill it

If you want to look really good and get your hair healthy again...go to a pro. Someone recommended.
The box stuff works but it can be very harsh and you'll still be guessing. You're too pretty to guess and get some weird cheap "box color". If it's a matter of saving money....still get it done professionally and ask the stylist what she suggests.

No matter what, DO NOT re-bleach or try to strip your hair of color, this will only make things much much worse!
If store bought color is your only option, then just buy a rich, dark shade of brown, and that should cover and dull the red pretty decently. When it comes to store bought color, even the dark shades contain a degree of bleach in them, so it's not the best option. If you do go with store bought, buy a good quality leave-in conditioner which you can use after the color treatment to counteract the damage that double processing with the dark color might do. Redkin can be found at most grocery/drug stores, and their leave-in treatments are salon quality. As hunnychile said, if you can, you should go to a salon with a good reputation where they can fix the problem for you. The products that they use will be *much* easier on your hair, and they'll also have a better idea what shades to use to get you where back where you want to be. Red is the hardest color to work with, so you'll have a better success rate with a professional. Good luck!

Box dyes are much harsher than the corresponding salon colors, *esp* red. If you have fine hair (like me), and especially if you have already had a treatment (didn't you recently perm your hair?) I HIGHLY recommend investing in a pro color job.

My daughter dyed her hair black. Problems were (and, as we found out, not uncommon when someone does their own hair), she a) left it in too long and the semipermanent became permanent and b) she got more black in the front than in the back.
She didn't want it black anymore and it was looking raggedy due to the uneveness. I took her to a salon. The owner had to apply a bleaching to her waist-length hair and, because of the disparity in color, the back became light blonde while the front barely changed. He then recolored her hair 'Chestnut' as a semi-permanent and, 3 weeks later, it is now a bright auburn. Because her hair is to her waist and she refuses to cut it, it will take over 3 years to get her natural hair back(it took that long to grow it this length from a chin-length cut). Moral of the story: Heed above advice and seek a professional! |

Black is exactly like bleaching your hair completely blonde, only opposite. I would never suggest anyone to dye their hair completely black or bleach it completely blonde, unless they know they are going to like it, and want to keep it. Otherwise, changing the color is nearly impossible. (like you've experienced!) |

Im sure I'll get blasted somewhere down the road, but having done my own hair "out of a box" and having it done professionally, I can tell no difference in the condition of my hair.
The only reason I go to a professional is to do highlights because Im not coordinated to do them myself. But then I've been dying my own hair a lot longer than most of you, and I've never ever bleached it myself. (Its only been bleached once when I decided I wanted to try blonde streaks on top of my own red dye job) An important thing is the care you give your hair AFTER its dyed. I only use shampoo for color treated hair, I do not use styling products full of alcohol and I completely stay away from any water containing chlorine (pools, hot tubs) I would much rather use my Herbal Essence dye and get the same results for 30 bucks cheaper (minimum).

So GG, get thee to a Sally, and follow ono's advice: get a rich, dark shade of brown. You'll also need to get a bottle of developer. Then, after coloring, deep-condition your hair. There are a lot of deep conditioning products on the market; look for ones with lots of natural oils--avocado oil, jojoba oil, etc. A surprising deal for the money is to look for Pantene's Relaxed and Natural Intensive Moisturizer conditioner--it's in a brown bottle. It is marketed towards women of color, but it works well for anyone with processed hair. Then, avoid heat styling your hair until it recovers, and when you do heat style after that, use a protectant. Keep deep conditioning as needed to keep your hair soft and healthy.

One thing I notice a lot of people saying is "Go get it Professionally Done" well guys as much as I appreciate the advice, you're forgetting one thing.
I'm a college student. My parents don't give me any extra money except for food. I work for everything else. I'm not going out to spend $100 on a dye job. I can't afford that and yes now I'm going to read, well you're spending $200 dollars on plane tickets each month...I know but thats more a priority than my hair. So please spare me that lecture. I'm planning on going to the store tomorrow and buying a regular brown and redying it to cover the red and then leaving it at that. My hair was permed in June, so it's been about 5 months. Also before I went to school in the fall I got it cut and all that fun stuff so it's not like my hair is long and gross with horrible ends. It's looks really good and healthy actually. I suppose it has been a while since posting photos or anything. Of course the important thing is that James said it doesn't matter if I came with blue hair. |

I didnt forget and I think your priorities are just fine
and a tip to go along with snowy's....when I use box dye (whether I get it at Sally's or the grocery store) I never use it out of the squeeze bottle. I invested a few extra dollars in that little plastic bowl and that dye brush (I think the bowl was like 1.29 and the brush was about a dollar). I shake it up in a bottle but then I dump the whole thing in the bowl and it gets brushed on just like at the salon

lol I'm not coordinated enough to figure out which strands of hair to dye a different color, get it on and rolled up in tin foil hehehehe (besides, I didnt say WHO brushed it on....while I can do it myself, Dave actually enjoys doing it for me and who am I to tell him no hehehehe Actually I think he just likes seeing me sitting at the bathroom sink topless)

That is a great idea about the brush and bowl, shani!
I've done mine at home and and had it done at the salon, and I've never noticed a difference in the softness of my hair (my hair is coarse and wavy and not too soft to begin with). The only thing I notice is mine looks patchy when I do it, so I was very, very careful the last time I did it, and it turned out damn good if I do say so myself. GG - I've used both L'Oreal Feria and Preference, as well as Hydrience (I think it's Clairol, but I'm not positive), and they come with a nice deep conditioner to use afterwards. I prefer the Feria or Hydrience to the Preference, but Preference seems to run a bit cheaper.

/threadjack I was thinking about this the other day and while I too am a poor college student in a LDR I will be saving up some money and going to a salon to get my hair done. I have no coordination to do it myself and the one time I did it looked terrible and it was hard on my hair (very fine) As far as the red thing goes, I've known a couple people with that problem and most of them said they fixed it with a deep brown over the red. Some of them looked damn good like that too. Good luck!

Oh I feel for you gg...in August I got my hair done at my salon. I've been a blonde for a long, long time, and was sick of the light-coloured strands and highlights. My natural hair colour is more of a light brown, which I love truth be told. ^_^
So I tell my hair dresser I'd like a change, and I go through the colour book, and pick out a coppery auburn. Well, because I've been bleaching my hair for years, the hair colour turned out lighter and more red than I imagined. Actually, its kind of on the orange side. :P So unfortunately my hair is still light-coloured, only red-orange. I don't mind it too much, its a nice change from yellow hair. -_- But I've already bought a box of brown dye to darken it. Its beena few weeks now, and I can already see some of the dye coming out, and the damn bleach blonde hair showing through. *sighs* So I'd better do it asap. I can't afford to go back to the salon and have it darkened. Did the box of brown dye turn out alright gg? |

From what my professional salon person told me, red is one of the hardest colors to get out. If you do go to a professional, make sure that they know what color you used before hand and they should be able to neutralize the red (usually using something with a green base).
However, to go on the cheaper side, I also recommend going with a straight brown. That red will hang on like nobodies business.

mm. the only time i had my hair colored was at a salon. it was supposed to be dark brown (it had lightened considerably over the summer, dark brown is my natural color) and came out almost jet black and glinted electric purple in the light. NEVER NEVER NEVER again will i color my hair. granted, im 34 and dont have much grey, but my trust was blown entirely on that trip. im in my 30s and someones mother... black and purple hair... um no thanks, i give the PTA ladies enough of a heart attack with my mouth... dont need to do it on sight.. brown, from a box, from the grocery store - it'll cover it hun - you'll be fine for under 10 bucks - save the big bucks for the airfare, not the salon! lol

you wanna hear something funny/strange? Most of you know I went to a salon last week and got really bright red streaks added to my dark brown hair.
Well I had that done on Wed. Friday we left for our vacation in the mtns....I was VERY careful to keep my hair up and out of the hot tub (the closest it came to the water was when I took the pics for the exhibition board, and then it still didnt touch the water). when pictures were over it was put up and covered so I wouldnt accidentally get it wet during the hot tub sex lol yesterday morning I took a shower before we left, it was fine, all nice and red. This morning when I got out of the shower and was drying it for work...my red streaks have gone fucking blonde UGH

That might be because of the color used--a lot of bright colors are only semi-permanent, not permanent.
If you want to recolor it yourself, I recommend Fudge's Paintbox dyes--they're semi-permanent, so you'll have to recolor once a month or so. But they last a lot longer than the alternatives (like Manic Panic or Punky Color).

Nah, I stopped by on the way home and let her look at it, she wants to give it a week to see if it all strips out...then I have 3 choices, she'll but manic panic red on it like I wanted (I KNOW that works), I can leave it with blonde streaks if it all comes out, or she'll just dye everything back to my dark chocolaty brown and we'll leave it as an experiment gone wrong lol

Ok Guys. I redyed it tonight So far it looks as though the brown has neautralized the red for the most part. Posting some pics for y'all to give opinions on.
Its pretty dark, but I'm anticipating it to fade out and lighten up within the next few weeks. So I'm not concerned about it too much. Overall I'm happier now than with the red. Last edited by surferlove007; 07-12-2010 at 05:01 PM.. |
