I agree, I always go to a professional.
Black is exactly like bleaching your hair completely blonde, only opposite. I would never suggest anyone to dye their hair completely black or bleach it completely blonde, unless they know they are going to like it, and want to keep it. Otherwise, changing the color is nearly impossible. (like you've experienced!)
