I've done mine at home and and had it done at the salon, and I've never noticed a difference in the softness of my hair (my hair is coarse and wavy and not too soft to begin with). The only thing I notice is mine looks patchy when I do it, so I was very, very careful the last time I did it, and it turned out damn good if I do say so myself.

GG - I've used both L'Oreal Feria and Preference, as well as Hydrience (I think it's Clairol, but I'm not positive), and they come with a nice deep conditioner to use afterwards. I prefer the Feria or Hydrience to the Preference, but Preference seems to run a bit cheaper.
