What draws you to message boards?
Why did you start visiting the first one you did?
What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards?

Why did you start visiting the first one you did?
I can't remember the first one EVER. I think the first one I ever joined was because it was about a show I liked watching What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? Over time, the show ended, but the community was friendly so I stuck around to chat with the community What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? The community, the intelligent conversations, the not so intelligent conversations , and did I mention the community? . Oh, that and the titty board What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? Community and discussion. I left a board that I used to frequently visit because the discussion became repetitive because of all the new people joining the board. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? I'm posting now aren't I? So I guess i'm not a lurker. However, I was when I first joined because I was intimidated by the intelligent conversation. Now my goal is to simply not look retarded while throwing my opinion out there once in a while. What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? Advice, lots of it. Just look at all the threads i've started. They're pretty much "how to do _____?"

Boredom. What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? It's a differnt kind of comunication. It allows for revision of one's thoughts which in turn helps to stimulate an examination of the self. Also, boredom. What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? A sumptuous amout of personalities, there are very few boards like TFP. What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? To be truthful, I think it's a habit. Also, boredom. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? I was a lurker for a little while, back when TFP started I came for the titty board, left a few comments and thats about it. Then when the Philosophy board came out I started posting there because at that time I was intrested in the subject and was a regular member at the philosophy.com board. From there I expanded to other forums in the TFP. What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? I think, I learned allot about myself and other people. It's facinating how open people are on forum boards. It's very hard to achieve the same depth in live discussions. So it's a differnt window into people minds. I find it very intresting. Also, alleviate my boredom. |

Ex-boyfriend introduced me to it. What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? I liked the idea of being able to share ideas, advice, and pieces of myself with various people. It's like being social with 20 people without ever leaving my desk. What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? The people. What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? I don't visit any other boards regularly anymore; I was driven away by inane conversation. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? I post about everything...I think most people know that What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? I've met some seriously awesome folks virtually and in real life. I've made some lifelong friends. And I've learned some really important and valuable things.

Why did you start visiting the first one you did?
I did a search on the so called "moon landing hoax" and a thread from a message borad debunking it pont by point popped up. I started visiting regularly and signed up after a few days. What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? There were a variety of topics to talk about, and I could pick and choose which ones to join and ignore those where I wouldn't be comortable. What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? Mostly the other people, and the variety of interesting topics. What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? One my wife runs. Another deals with comic books. Others I just occasionally browse. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? I read far more than I post. I probably post about half the time I get the urge to share my opinion. I'll start a reply, then when it's done, delete it if I'm not satisfied, which is maybe 1/2 the time. What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? Information. Understanding how other people think. Social interaction without the pressure of personal contact. A long-distance girlfriend. Emotional support. Gilda

Why did you start visiting the first one you did?
This was the first one I visited regularly. I was intrigued when I first stumbled upon it, and I think I spent about 24 hours in 2 days just reading thread after thread, post after post. I thought everything was well organized, and I could jump into a different pool depending on my mood. What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? Ummmm. I think my first posts were in the Canada Regional Forum, and I didn't know I was allowed to post elsewhere. I thought that all of the foreigners were banished to the regional threads, and only Yanks were allowed to post in the general discussion threads. I found that Charlatan, Flyman and AceofSpades were Canadian and posting other places, so I did too. What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? The level of discourse. At the very start, people cared about what I had to say, and gave their (sometimes opposing) views very intelligently. I went on some other boards and found the abundance of Post-Count-Whores and old vets that bombarded me with "STFU NOOB" that I quickly ran back to TFP and licked my wounds (along with other body parts that I could reach ). What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? As the answer above shows, I stay away from other boards. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? I post about almost everything. I feel motivated to give my opinion because of pure ego. I think people want to read what I have to say. If they don't, they just skim over my post when they see the name of the poster. What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? Different points of view; A shoulder to laugh/cry on; a sense of belonging in this big open cyberspace; a place to vent (my physical environment often discourages venting); learning about others, without all of the bullshit "How is my hair fixed today" or petty visual hang-ups that normal face-to-face interpersonal communication is plagued with.

Message board usage usually comes out of boredom for me, either at work or at home. But I've really enjoyed TFP on the whole. It's a good place to get advice or get help in one way or the other.
And no, I'm not a lurker. I like saying things pretty off the cuff and that'll get me in trouble sometimes. |

Why did you start visiting the first one you did?
The first board I recall coming across was an automotive forum. I was having some trouble with an old car I have and one of the google hits was a thread from that board. I not only found a solution to my problem, but recognized that it had a great deal more information. What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? On that same automotive board, I had information that I felt I could share and benefit others as well. They also had an off topic forum or "lounge" that was often interesting. What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? I don't browse a lot of boards (maybe three that I can think of). This one just seems to have quantity and quality which I credit more to the moderators than anything else. What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? One of the others boards I visit is frankly the complete opposite of this one and I like that as much as this one. It is kind of like sometimes enjoying a nice meal in a quiet restaurant and other times tossing a few back in a rowdy bar. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? If what I would say has been said I won't usually chime in any more. Or at least I try not to. And then if I do, like public speaking, it would depend on the audience. On this board my opinions on the things that make me thing "What the fuck" wouldn't be needed or appreciated. On the other hand I post things on here that I'd never offer on the rowdier board that I frequent. What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? From the automotive board I've certainly saved a fair amount of trouble and cash. On here I've seen some interesting perspectives on things that I may not have otherwise been exposed to. The third board has killed some brain cells I think.

Why did you start visiting the first one you did?
It happened to be associated with Diablo 2, a game that I spent the better part of two years playing. What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? U GIEV SOJ? ^______^ (Trading items, giving and getting advice, etc). Eventually it turned into just awesome people. What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? It is the nicest and most learned board I've yet to encounter. What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? People. I'm an internet whore. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? I used to post about everything. I now only post if something really piques my interest, someone really twangs my doodle with a comment they make, or I think I'm making a super hilarious post. What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? I've met a person or two, I am well-informed on computer technology largely through asking people on message boards, and they give me a much wider breadth of people with which I've interacted than I could possibly achieve in the material world.

Boredom drew me here, interesting people make me stay.
I don't post much compared to how much I browse. A lot of the time I am not qualified to post at all, so I just keep my thoughts in my head. Other times I post the dumb shit that my mind comes up with. Like right NOW. I also listen to music a LOT, and reading gives me something to do other than play solitaire for 343672457 hours while listening to music. Like right now.

I was a stay-at-home dad looking for other guys doing what I did. What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? I wanted conversation! What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? I don't know. What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? Info on shit I don't know. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? Yes. No. No. What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? Not the same old shit.

I was only *lurking* occasionally until I started using RSS and put the General Discussion in my reader. Now I check it every day.
I really enjoy the diversity and conversations. I sometimes happen on to other boards by Google-ing something I'm working on, and I'm always amazed at how rude people can be to one another. That's the major thing I like about TFP. I'm not one to share my opinions, mostly because I don't like confrontation of any kind, and I feel that here I don't have to worry about that. I'm most definitely a lurker. I've really tried to increase my posts, although mostly I don't feel my opinion is too important. I really like the format; read what others opinions are, post if you want, read anytime, proofread/edit posts before putting them out there for everyone to read, etc.

Why did you start visiting the first one you did?
EverQuest.. the first real MMORPG I ever played, had a board for my server. It was fun bickering with the same people I'd see sometime in the game. It was also fun talking to the people on the board who I finally met in game.. it feel like we were long-lost strangers.. always talking on the board, but never actually seeing each other in person (in .. uhh avatar).. What exactly stimulated you to start posting/browsing regularly? Here or there? On the Server board, it was the discussion of stuff that was relevant to us all, playing on the same server. There was a way to organize raids, and it was fun to see what everyone else was doing on a given day. Here, it's the diversity and intelligence of discussion. Clicking "New Posts" nets me stuff about sex, life, politics, computers, games, you name it. And USUALLY, the posters are intelligent and posting coherent replies. What is it about TFP that keeps you coming back? As above. What draws you to any other boards you regularly visit? Similar gaming interests. Are you a lurker? Do you almost always feel motivated to give your opinion? Do you post about everything? I almost always feel motivated to give my opinion, because its often well-thought-out, no matter my lack of direct experience in the matter. What benefits have you gotten from being around message boards? Cheap weapons in the video games I've played, entirely new philosophies on life and love, and a better understanding of myself. Specifically, I kept getting my posts deleted on the gaming forum because of my posts about my (then) asinine beliefs about women and gaming. After having my millionth post deleted, I started to realize that maybe it WAS a bad position to hold, and I'm the better becuase of it .. so ya.. YAY TFP!!!! EDIT: I forgot to add; the MOST important part of TFP for me is the "trust." Not trust in the conventional sense, but a trust that if I post a personal quesiton I won't get stupid-ass jerk responses. I'll usually get some empathetic responses, some pyschological responses, but always PRODUCTIVE and POSITIVE responses. This position sways a little bit in the politics forum, but for the most part.. I *trust* TFP to always have intelligent, mature conversation and I trust the readers to not abuse that transfer of information.
