Why I love where I live...

I live in NYC.

Last night I had the good fortune to attend something very special. I went to see a screening of the King & I fully restored in glamorous CinemaScope55. I was excited to see this print because of it being one of the widest and largest formats. Originally I had confused it with Cinerama which I had the chance to see in LA but just was too lazy to bother.

The theater was a small screening room holding a hundred or so people. Two director's chairs stood to the right side of the screen at the foot of a 20 foot golden Oscar. A person came up to talk a bit about Marni Nixon, and called her the "ghostess with the mostest" since she went uncredited for the dubbing of people like Deborah Kerr and Katherine Hepburn. We watched a montage of her performances, one on camera one for Sound of Music. He then introduced her and she stood up from the audience and came and did a little Q&A session and talked about the secrecy of the studios back in the 50's.

Quote:

Only two films were completed in CinemaScope 55 – Carousel and The King and I, both in 1956. Even at that time audiences saw The King and I in prints made from a 35mm reduction negative; this Academy Gold Standard Screening marks the first time in New York that the public has been able to see this film in its original aspect ratio. In addition, the original stereo soundtrack has been faithfully recreated in 4-track Dolby Digital stereo. Anna and her King have never looked or sounded this incredible, as they sing and dance their way through such Rodgers and Hammerstein classics as “Shall We Dance” and “Getting to Know You.” The program will be introduced by 20th Century Fox executive Schawn Belston.
So why do you love to live where you do?

I can't tell you how much I love the king and I, it's such a beautiful film. I remember seeing it about 3 years back and completely fell in love with it. I live in NYC also and I love it, I've lived here my entire life and I am now looking to move somewhere else, no specific reasons, I just want change. I remember going into the City with my father when I was a little girl, we'd visit the Empire State Building, take the Ferry for no reason atall to SI and stroll around central park until we got tired, those were the day. I love this place, there is a feeling that I used to get as a child walking down the blocks in the City, and I am a 25 year old adult now and I still get that feeling when I am there. Hooray to NYC! Where in NYC do you live?

I love where I live because it has been rated one of the cleanest cities in the world, as well as one of the most beautiful. Although the thermal inversion leads to smog being worse than it should be, the mountains can be seen from all quadrants of the city, we have an amazing river, vegetation, parks, and urban sprawl second only to Dallas, Texas (a bad thing in some ways, but really defeats the sometimes claustrophobic feel of urban centres).

I loved where i lived last year - Berlin... why i hear you ask, because it's the coolest place ever, cheap, excellent night life, excellent beer, beautiful women, so much culture so much modern history, so much passion for life. The vibe there is incredible.

London on the other hand is a place that you can only enjoy if you have money, failing that get out as soon as possible. That's why i plan to leave as soon as my studying is done, failing the leaving part just have to earn shit loads of money.

Western North Carolina!!!

I have NEVER felt so at home as I do in the mtns of NC. I guess its because thats where my family is from, though I've never lived there. There is something about going to Murphy, Franklin, Bryson City and Waynesville that gets my blood going and I feel a connection to the area and the people.

/as a side note.....God Yul Brener was one sexy man

The Bay Area is just beautiful. It never gets deathly cold like the midwest (where I am originally from) and the views are simply spectacular.

It just makes you happy to look outside.

There are many, many reasons why I *don't* love living in SLC, but here are a few good things - beautiful mountains, it's hard to get lost, and....well, that's about it.

I used to live in eastern North Carolina, and I truly loved it. Loved the weather, loved the people, loved the beaches, loved the less hectic pace of life. I really want to move back there, I just need to convince hubby.

If I could live anywhere though, I'd live in Great Britain somewhere. Loved, loved, LOVED it there.

I love NC because we basically get 4 months of autumn, and a glorious spring full of wisteria and azaleas. I love that I'm 4 hours from mountains, 3 hours from ocean, and that the area's culture is vibrant and developing so there's lots of stuff to get in on the ground floor of.

Although relatively featureless I love North Texas for it's simplicity.

We have no towering mountains or warming ocean views but there's something special about being able to go out into the country and look out on a clear blue day and see for miles and miles. I live just outside of Dallas and it's a cool feeling to be able to drive just over the crest of a small hill and see Dallas in the distance skyscrappers glinting in the sunlight.
The weather in my opinion is just fantastic. We are far enough south that we get wonderful sunny days most of the year and while it gets hot and humid as hell in late July to early September the rest of the year when it ranges from 60-80 degrees and sunny it's fantastic. There's nothing more delightful than in the middle of October waking up and being able to walk out of the house on what in many parts of the world would be a late spring day. But while it's warm we also are far enough North that we get an actual winter so we can enjoy the cold dreary days that make you just want to go inside and snuggle up. But the good thing is we only have that weather for 4-6 weeks.

The feel of the area is great. While it's spread out everything is within an easy drive to one of the biggest cities in North America. You can move out to the suburban areas that are 20-30 miles out of the main city center and the air is so clear and clean it's wonderful. It's so nice to go outside in your own little hamlet breathe deep and full and get nothing but nice clean air,and then hope on the roads and you are dead in the middle of downtown in a few minutes. It's wonderful that it's so sprawled out actually in that you can live in the same area as a lot of your family and you aren't always bumping into them but if something big happens you can be right there in an emergency. It's also good on keeping the cost of living down as there are a good amount of jobs and plenty of room for housing all around the Dallas area. We get paid well here but we also don't have to pay as much to live the good life. A 120,000 dollar house in a lot of places here would be the equal to a 200,000-250,000 dollar house in other places.

And just in general people are just nice folks. Southern hospitality tinted with some Texas flair. People are more than likely to stop down and damn near fight over if they can help somebody that obviously needs it. How many places do you go to that you'll be in the middle of a town with a few million people and you routinely see people waving and nodding at one another in greeting when they don't even know them?

And the pace of life is just slower. We still get in a hurry to get things done efficiently but everybody isn't in a constant rush.

Dallas has a bunch of stuff to do all year round no mater what you like to do. It's a sports fans dream because there is a pro team in just about every major sport league in existance in the Dallas area. NFL,NHL,NBA,MLB,minor league baseball, minor league hockey,MLS,Arena Football, two NASCAR events and even some IRL races. Oh and big time horse racing. Ahh..can't forget the rodeos either. It kicks butt.
And Arlington is like theme park mecca. While it's not Orlando or Anahiem our Six Flags is huge and has some of the best coasters you'll ever get on. Then across the street there is the giant water park. The nightlife while it's not L.A.,New York,Miami or even Austin is fairly solid. The music scene is good and there's been plenty of home grown talent coming out of Dallas that has made their print on the national music scene. Nora Jones,Erika Baydu, the Polyphonic Spree for some recent examples. The clubs are nice even though a lot of them are so self-important that they think they ARE in South Beach.

And the food. The food here is perfection. I can only think of a few places that have a better geographic balance of food and influences than Dallas does.
Being in Texas we have killer Barbecue, the Mexican food is great,we are Southern so the soul food places are great, since Ft. Worth was a major cattle center we've always had killer steak joints(Texas Land and Cattle,Saltgrass....**Droool**),we are close to Louisiana so we have some good cajun food joints, and Dallas has several top tier gormet and French restaurants. Then we have a lot of people from Korea in Dallas, and Garland has a really big population from the Mid-east and you can find a few really good hole in the wall kind of places for mid-east cuisine.

The shopping malls here are just ridiculous in size and frequency. We seriously actually probably have too many.

And the women. The women in Dallas are CRAZY hot. They tend to get married quickly and a lot of them decide they want to get fat and happy but the ones that are at the peak of their game I'd put up against anybody in the world seriously. They just don't grow them like this in other places.

I could seriously go on for pages about the cool parts and things in Dallas. I love it here. I plan on moving away just for a while but I plan on coming back to setup roots. If I was rich I have always said I'd have houses in Miami or Hawaii for the beaches, a little place in New York or L.A. for the scene but to live...it would only be Dallas for me.

I love Corvallis, Oregon because it has a lot of "big town" comforts with a "small town" feel. We have a Pac-10 university, we have three (soon to be four) movie theaters, shopping, a vibrant downtown, a healthy arts scene, a great local music scene, awesome ethnic restaurants, and some really rockin' bars--all in a town of about 50,000 residents. We're an hour (or less) from the Oregon Coast and about two hours from skiing. We're forty minutes from Eugene, forty minutes from Salem and an hour and a half from Portland.

Not only is it a college town, it's a town of stately homes, enormous oaks, fantastic parks, and beautiful scenery.

I'm going to have a really hard time leaving when all is said and done. I feel like I've really put down roots here over the last five years, and if I have to move to Eugene after I graduate I'm going to be very sad.

I live in Northeastern Arkansas.

I'm 20 minutes from the lake, I'm 20 minutes from some beautiful hills and hiking trails. Right now, I live in town, but before that I usually lived on the outskirts, where it wasn't all that unusual to see a wild animals making way across your yard.

The town is large enough to support a number of "box stores" (Wal*Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc....) and dozens of different places to eat, yet small enough to still have that hometown feel. I go to the library, vote or pay my bills and they call me by name before I even set my information in front of them.

We've got a pretty good sized two-year college and, what I think is, a pretty good school system. Even now, inside the city, which is all of 20,000, I believe, you can still find people to help you out when you need it (thanks to the large volunteer community) and your neighbors still stop by to chat when they catch you raking your leaves or mowing your grass.

I've had my doubts about the area, but just the other day the guy next door seen me working on my mother's car and stopped to ask if I needed any help. It ended up going to the shop, where the mechanic replaced the battery cables. He charged her only for the parts and sent her on her way.

I think that's what a community is supposed to be and that's why I love living here.

I love Stockholm because it's so small I know my way around most of it yet big enough to still surprise and delight me. There's always a lot of different things going on, so no matter what your interests are you can always find something to do. It's very close to nature too, to the water in particular. You can swim and fish in central Stockholm without risking your health. Just outside the Opera house is a good spot for salmon trout, apparently.

Plus, Stockholm is beautiful.

That HOT Guy (I've never quite heard Yul Brynner referred to that way before )has been in some pretty good movies... The Magnificent Seven, The Sound and the Fury, the classic.. Westworld (not to be confused with Waterworld) and The Ten Commandments... Having sat thru An Affair to Remember, Deborah Kerr just annoys me... It's a wonderful movie though... Shall We Dance is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time...

Ah NJ, home sweet home. Most dissed state. Third most populous state, though no where near third in size. Way too liberal for my tastes but.. We've got character... and we've got characters. We've got a long history of corruption in government, who really knows where Jimmy Hoffa is buried, we've got the legend of the Jersey Devil in the Pine Barrens... We've got a magnificent stretch of Atlantic Ocean. Head west and there's some of the most beautiful farm country and horse country you'll ever see anywhere. We've got four real seasons. We've got an HBO series devoted to mobster life in NJ (And each shot in the opening scenes of the Sopranos are all within 15 minutes (some 1000 feet) from my house. We do have the highest insurance rates in the country... but eh -- we've also got really bad drivers so we need to compensate. NJ is more than the NJ Turnpike with all it's belching factories, for a tiny state it's got a lot to offer. Oh, and those views offered from high priced NYC West Side high rises? Are of NJ... They are paying a lot of money to look at us... Must be something special there. We've also got the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Even though they weren't invented here, we've made them our own, we've got more diners than any place... And diner's are so NJ, that absolut had an Absolut Ad dedicated to us...

Let's see.. I'm trying to think of a reason why I love where I live. I guess I don't. I hate NC so incredibly bad. So as others have done I'll talk about a place where I love.

I lived in Arlington for a little while. I loved it because it wasn't quite as hectic as Dallas but there were still plenty of things to do. I was close enough to Dallas and Ft. Worth that it offered that much more to do. Plus, Arlington has a great ballpark where you can go on those lazy days and just sit in the stands and eat a hot dog and drink a cold brew. Plus there were plenty of places to just chill and have a picnic with your girl or whatever you wanted to do. You could go to several different restaraunts, you could shop for weeks, you could just sit and watch all the people. It was great.

I've lived in Roseburg, Oregon pretty much all my life, and corvallis is probally one of the best places in the state to live.. not to urban, not to rural, its great there

Whats really wonderful about oregon, is that you can really get anything you want if your willing to drive for about an hour Concerts at the gorge, Blazer games in portland, the casino in canyonville, theres a little bit of everything, if you know where to look.
Its said we're suppost to have the most scenic coastal front in the country

Oregon isn't a real active state.. not exactly a social or economical mecca, but its a great place to live all the same

the ocean is close, the mountains are very close, it's got great transportation so you don't need a car, there are (at least) 3 fantastic free weekly newspapers, the music "scene" here is diverse and interesting, there are a billion great places to eat, it's got 2 huge rivers, the city is laid out extremely well, there's just the right amount of people, it's clean, it's got TREES, it's actually hard to get lost, it's cheaper than any other big city i can think of in the pacific northwest... and best of all, it's in the pacific northwest.

it rules basically

By the beginning of Fall, Mrs. Warrrreagl and I should be typing the exact same thing as we move into our new home in the Alabama woods.

I am also reminded of another ART entry from the Daily Thoughts thread:

so cal. though the traffic can drive a saint into road rage, it is the only place where you can surf and snowboard on the same day. i'm less than an hour from all the nice southern beaches (huntington for the waves and tourists, laguna for the chill and art, santa monica, venice, etc for the lame tourists and the dirty water -- if that's your cup of tea) and i'm 1.5 hours from an awesome mountain for snowboarding.

can't beat that, imho

I love being right in the middle of one of the best rock climbing regions in the US. Southern Utah is great for an outdoor kind of guy. The only other place that I would like to live is near Yellowstone maybe

I live in CT, and though the traffic sucks, and there are a lot of tightasses, I like the 4 seasons we get, and the accessability to everything.

If I want to go to NYC, it's a 70 minute train ride to Grand Central.

If I want to go to the mountains of Vermont, it's only a 3 hour drive. 3 hours to Boston too. Jersey Shore, 3.5 hours.

But my favorite part is being in the Eastern Time Zone. The rest of the US, and a good chunk of the world has to work around Eastern Time. I don't bend for you, you bend for meeeeeeeee heheheh.

I hate where I live.

But I would love to live in Florida again. Right on the panhandle. The panhandle is full of small towns and small cities, which i appreciate since I'm not a fan of huge cities at all. Plus, the beaches are some of the most beautiful with their white sands and warm water. Oh, and I don't mind the humidity at all. After living there 8 yrs, It really doesn't bother you in the least. I'll be welcoming the humidity because now that I know what it's like to have dry skin even when you're constantly putting lotion on, I APPRECIATE the humidity. I'll be moving back soon.. until then I can only bitch about how much I hate Arizona.
