I met Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward at the Radnor Horse Show a few years ago.
They were just walking around in the crowd and being recognized by a few people and they were responding very graciously and in a friendly manner. He actually said "hi" right to me!!! I'm not sure, but I'm sort of remembering they were actually competing in one of the show events...maybe dressage? |

Twenty years ago, Linda Evans used to frequent a store/pharmacy/old fashioned soda fountain that I worked at. I made her a tuna sandwich each time. She had a home nearby, at a place called Medera Estates. Once, she asked me where to find cleaning supplies for a new house like brooms and mops. I gave her directions to Fred Meyers, thinking it was odd that she didn't know where one was. I mean, she had lived nearby for alot longer than I had worked there. Quiet voice, somewhat easy going but seemed almost a little shy or reserved. Like people had to talk to her first, but then she was sweet and quick to smile. She came in sometimes with another lady, a bit younger than she. My boss said that was her guru, and she was also her ex-husband's daughter. I did not recognize that woman but her father's name was familiar.

Eleven years ago I attended a chamber music workshop where our ensemble was conducted and coached by Itzhak Perlman. I met Steven Spielberg during its closing concert.
The conductor of the orchestra I performed with throughout high school played the conductor in the movie Fame. I also met Lukas Foss, a contemporary American composer, many years ago as a child. I've met former Poet Laureate Derek Walcott. On the sidwalk I've bumped into George Stephanopoulos (in New York), Howard Dean and James Carville (DC).

I met Kasey Chambers when I was seventeen.
She came to perform in my home town of Bendigo, and all I wanted for my birthday that year was to see her perform live. That was actually quite strange, as I had only heard of her a week beforehand, watched a thirty second advert for her debut album. Anyway, I watched her perform and she blew me away. I got my photo taken with her, she signed it, and had herself a lifelong fan.

Some names to add to my list, Cal Ripken and Billy Ripken started a little league program in central VA. Cal holds two records - most continuous games, and longest professional game with the Rochester Red Wings.
I'm hoping interviews come through for Sheryl Crow and Dar Williams. I would live on Dar's front porch just to be close to that greatness.

wow, what was he like charlatan? did you meet him on a boat?
i saw Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam) about two weeks ago in Dubai. I was walking in a mall when i looked over and there he was. i had to do a triple take to make sure it was him. He was dressed like any normal person and was window shopping, so i let him be to enjoy his privacy.

I once saw a guy who hosted a local cable television show for children called .. uh .. I can't remember, it was a really obscure television show.
Anyway I didn't dare go up to him because he was all like Mr. TV-Man and I was little old me while we were both checking out the hottest new furniture on display at the local IKEA. |

Elizabeth Hurley (and her bodyguard?) walked past me in a grocery store in Nova Scotia, when she was here filming The Weight of Water. I met John Diefenbaker when my grade nine class went on a school trip to Ottawa...many years ago. |

Many years ago, in 1993, my family went to San Francisco on a family vacation. We were staying at the St. Francis in Union Square. One morning Dad decided our tourist destination of the day would be Fisherman's Wharf, so we got on the cable car and went down there. We didn't bother to eat breakfast before we went; he said we could get breakfast down there. As we were walking along the wharf, he spotted a McDonalds and asked my mom if that was where she wanted to eat breakfast. My mom looked down the wharf and saw a place called Lou's open for breakfast. She doesn't like McDonalds, so Lou's it was. About halfway through our meal, these guys with suits start swarming past the restaurant's window onto the street. A week before, some guy had gone into an office building in San Francisco and shot up a bunch of office workers, so immediately my parents were hypervigilant. Then, one of the restaurant staff yelled out, "It's the President!" President Clinton was in town speaking to the national teacher's convention at Moscone. I rushed to the window just as he walked by on his cool-down walk after his morning jog. I knocked on it to get his attention and he waved back at me, smiling. I relayed this story to my former 5th grade teacher that fall, knowing she had gone to the convention and had seen President Clinton speak. She was so irritated that I got to see him more up-close than she had.

I never remember the name of the restaurant. It's all in Korean except the word 'tofu'. But it is definitely a favourite of the university crowd as well as townies, as every meal there has a cost of $7.08. Wait, I'll paste in the Google streetview link: (it's called Puk Chang Dong Soon Tofu) http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&sourc...16.09,,0,-1.44 so yummy.

This topic has been active since 2003 and I have never seen it? Wow... My powers of observation are as keen as usual...
Several years ago Al Pachino was ahead of me in line at the Jules Stein Eye Institute. He asked if the Doctor knew that HE was waiting... the nurse just told him to take a seat and wait. He was there with his family and obviously didn't want to be pestered, so I left him alone. That dude is SHORT! Phil Jackson and Danny Aiellio shopped at the store I used to work at in Redondo Beach. It was strange with Danny Aiello, I didn't approach him, but every time I looked his way, he was already staring at me as if he knew who I was or something. And if you consider the punk scene in the 90's to be big, I think every low-rent punk band that toured Southern California ended up crashing at my buddy's place at one time or another. Too many bands/people to name.

Watson gave that same kid an autograph and a pat on the back. Oh, and Natalie Merchant babysat me once. She was a little "different" if I recall correctly. I may be missing some, but it's late and I don't care to tax my brain rememberizing more :-) |

In 1991, I was in the BWI airport, trying to get to Montreal via Boston. The whole East Coast was fogged in, so I was going to miss my connection. It was a Friday afternoon during the Atlanta/Minnesota World Series, and there was a game in Minneapolis that night. I was trying to change my flight to a direct one to Montreal, and was standing in line behind a black gentleman in a business suit who was trying to find a flight to Minneapolis. People were running everywhere trying to change flights to make connections.
I chatted with this guy for about 15 minutes about how inconvenient it was, and hard to believe in this (that) day and age. He was very pleasant to talk to, and then, just before he went up to the counter, these 3 young kids who had been watching us came running over and said, "Can we have your autograph, Mr. Aaron?" How does a life-long baseball fan spend 15 minutes talking to Hank Aaron and not recognise him???? Granted he was in a business suit, but I can only think of Kirstie Alley's classic line from Cheers that sometimes "I am too stupid to live!"

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. I almost met David Tennant and Patrick Stewart, but it was not meant to be. Onodrim and I went to England to see the production of Hamlet they were both in at the Royal Shakespeare Company. There's a small pub down the street that the actors are known to hang out at after performances and sometimes before, so of course we went there. Most of the rest of the cast did show up, but Tennant and Stewart were apparently taking the night off from public interaction. If we had gone one night earlier, they both would have been there! I'm still bummed about that.

I've had brushes with only 3 famous (maybe semi-famous in some cases) people.
First up (on two separate occasions) (That's the greatest action hero in the world standing next to Jackie Chan!) I also met Ken Lo, action star of many Hong Kong movies (kinda unknown in the US) I also met Colonel Lee Joseph Archambault, the pilot of the space shuttle Atlantis! I'd almost list singer Willie Nelson here, but I don't really count it because I didn't know it was him until someone asked me if I'd noticed Willie Nelson walking past me.
