I ran track with Lee Flowers (NFL safety for the Steeler and Seahawks), lived next to Jonathan Byrd (PGA golfer) when he was a kid and Peter Bouwlare (NFL linebacker for the Ravens).
James Dickey (author of 'Deliverance') taught me to play "Dueling Banjos" on the guitar. I met Joseph Heller (author of 'Catch-22') I had drinks one night with the members of Collective Soul and then another night with the members of Hootie and the Blowfish. I met Tom Ford (the designer for Gucci)...it was funny to see the girls watch him and then him checking out the guys. I ran into Cal Ripken Jr. one day after a ballgame in Baltimore...super nice guy, was very gracious.

I met Kyle Petty, even have a picture with him, when I was 10.
Spent an afternoon in Shirley Maclaines house in New Mexico a couple of years ago. Met Robert Urich on the set of 'the lazarus man'.

The last LZ tour was from May 1980 to September 1980. Bonham died on 9/25/80. The only other times the remaining members played together was for one-shot-only deals at Live-Aid in 1985 and Atlantic's 25th anniversary concert in 1988. Plant and Page did do the MTV Unplugged thing and the "No Quarter" tour in 1995, but that wasn't LZ...that was just Plant and Page. Big Difference.

Just reminded me--
Diane Sawyer and Mike Nichols - had dinner at the next table at a very cute little restaurant in Westchester NY. Phil Simms (Former quarterback of the NY Giants and now a broadcaster) had gone to Christmas Eve mass with my parents, and the church was super crowded, so I gave up my seat to some elderly woman and I went and stood in the back of the church. I couldn't help but notice my mom turning around every so often and laughing and then poking my dad and him turning around and laughing. Now, thinking my parents have gone daft, couldn't figure out what their problem was... Until I looked to the left, and standing not 6 inches from me, is this big, huge tall, blonde speciman of a man... YUMMMMM... (at that point I was oh so grateful for the part of the catholic mass when you give the sign of peace to the people around you... One of my last jobs, I've worked for two different news magazine, I worked with and saw on a regular basis, a lot of people that you'd see on the Sunday Morning news shows... and we always saw famous people in the building there for interviews. Walter Cronkite was one of the most impressive people I ever met, and Katherine Graham was one of the most gracious (though I am told she could cuss like a sailor when provoked)

A friend and myself once picked up Jeff Ward from the airport. Yeah, groupies.
Walked past Jackie Mason on Worth Ave. in Palm Beach. He looks like a puppet. Glanced at me like I owed him money. Steffi Graf at a tennis tournament in FL. Great legs. Walked past and exchanged 'hi's' with Jana Novotna on an early morning solitary walk. |

Let's see... I knew Clay Aiken before he was on American Idol. But then again, everybody else in Raleigh claims to now.
I've met Stephen Lynch a few times too. Great, genuine guy and funny as hell. My aunt painted some murals in the house of some wrestler who's name I can't remember at the moment and invited me to go see them (murals) with the permission of of his wife (who was, if it matters to anybody, one of the nitro girls). Apparently however, the wife failed to mention this to her husband. I drive up and park next to my aunt's van and get out and start looking for her. Up comes this huge guy holding a bat. I just about jumped back into my car and hauled ass out of there. But my legs seemed to have their own agenda, which was apparently stand as rigidly as possible until the big man with the probable weapon reaches you. So he gets to me, asks me what I'm doing here, and apparently my voice was steady enough that he understood and, if gruffly, was really nice and took me to find her. The other thing that really got me about them was that they were complete, if you'll excuse my terminology, jesus freaks. The only time I ever met somebody who was already famous and didn't immediately realize it was on my way home from San Antonio. This guy was at the curb of the airport having some problems getting his luggage out of the trunk of the car, so I walked over and helped him. He thanked me and when he finally turned towards me I realized he was Bruce Willis. I talked to him for a while about how much of a pain in the ass flying is getting to be and then, for fear of seeming like every other person that meets him, I didn't ask him for an autograph. Instead I said it was great talking to him, and went inside to catch my plane. Of course, without that autograph, not a single one of my friends will buy that I met him... Oh well. |

Jerry Rice: he was taking his son to Oklahoma for college, and stopped into a best buy I was shopping in.
Jim Clark: CO-FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, MyCFO; CO-FOUNDER, NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS CORP. AND HEALTHEON/WEB MD CORPORATION. He also founded Silicon Graphics. I know him personally. He's a good guy, and we go out for coffee/food when I go to San Francisco. Tucker Max Larry Page/Sergey Brin (if you don't know who they are, look them up on Google Search) Larry Ellison: Saw him at a starbucks in San Jose, and spoke with him for about 20 minutes. Michael Dell: Went to visit a friend who works for Dell in Round Rock, and he came up behind us in the Starbucks line in one of the buildings on campus. He was wearing a hawaiian shirt and shorts with flip flops. I guess when you own the company, you do pretty much whatever the hell you want to. Paul S. Otellini: I met him when I was at a Networld/Interop conference. Linus Torvalds: met him at a linux conference when Transmeta came onto the scene and he's even an orkut friend

Used to chat with Wally Shawn frequently. He's a great guy.
Also, living in NYC, I see celebs a lot. Saw J-Lo and Ralph Feines in Central Park filming "Chamber Maid" which became "Maid in NY." Saw Sean Combs a month ago. Ralph Lauren was funny to see on the street because he's about 4'11". Anyway there's many many more (Gael Garcia Bernal at the NYC premiere of Y Tu Mama Tambien was cool too).

I've met and played with some famous (and some who SHOULD be) jazz musicians.
When I was 15-17 (1963-1965) I played lots of parties in Bel Air & Berverly Hills but did not know or care who I was playing for :-) The piano player (Betty Boop's son) in that band is now 'executive in charge of music for Universal Pictures' and has been for quite some time. Guess he's famous in some circles. Harry Garfield. We got the first job by way of The Rifleman's son, Johnny Crawford, who I never met. |

Nothing ever seems to happy to me when it comes to famous people, or even remotely famous people. But, my Aunt was once lab partners with Jerry Seinfeld; her brother was friends with Alec Baldwin.
My Dad sat next to the daughter of one of the members of the Mama's and the Papa's, on a flight home from Dallas, TX (I was on the flight too, but stuck in coach.) Not sure who though. Don't know if this counts, but a former Pro Football player lives our town and is an assistant coach to our High School Football team. I forget the guy's name, but he played for the Oakland Raiders. (How he ended up in NE Ohio is a mystery to me.) And my friends got to meet a bunch of celebrities in early October when they were going around the country registering voters (or getting them to register.) My friends even got Deidrich Bader to do some queer "promo," I guess you would say, for one of their home movies. Kinda weird, but cool!

Shook hands with and actually spoke with Robert Steiner and Owen Gromme both artists who won Master Wildlife Artist of the year and their works were used on the Duck Stamps for the years they won. My mother purchased a print of one of Owen Gromme's works and he signed it for her personally. I was just a kid but I thought that was SO COOL.
Also Kevin Hermening, one of the Iranian hostages back in the 80's spoke at my high school graduation. There were only 3 of us students graduating that year (homeschool group graduation) and so we got to spend some time just actually talking to him. He mostly spoke about how the experience of being imprisoned was and how amazing a feeling it was to be free. He talked about being led out in the blindfolds and not even realizing he was going to be released. It was even a shock to be released. I digress. It was something I'll never forget to get to talk to someone who was a part of world history while I was growing up. My kid someday will say "What was the Iran-Contra affair?" I'll know, possibly better than some because I spoke to a part of that history. As for celebrities? I'm not that interested. People who are movers and makers in our world - those are the ones I'm interested in meeting or hearing about.

Paradise Lost, was it Bijou Phillips?
Reanna, that is pretty cool to have been able to chat with one of the Iran hostages. It's not everyday you get to speak with someone who was involved in something so historical. I was like 2 feet away from John Glenn in the basement area of the Capitol. This was during my trip to D.C. for Close-Up in, I think, 1996, so before he went back into space. Met Spencer Abraham, as he was a senator of Michigan at the time, before becoming Bush's Energy Secretary. Shook Al Gore's hand a couple months ago at a church he was visiting. Hmm... any musicans I've met are not exactly big stars... Johnette Napolitano and everyone else from Concrete Blonde, Chris Randall from Sister Machine Gun, Kimya Dawson from The Moldy Peaches, all of the Verve Pipe, all of the Von Bondies. Oh, I also met Buster Mathis Jr, who you may know as the guy who got his ass whooped by Mike Tyson in 96. He came into the pizza place I was working to ask for directions to some mortgage place. This was after he won some settlement from his old manager or something. Me and Kelly Curtis looked at each other. He's Pearl Jam's long-time manager. Okay, I guess I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel. I'll stop. |

Who is the most famous person you've ever met/talked to?
I've talked to Mandy Moore on AIM and in AIM chats - before "A Walk To Remmber" and her career took off, but the most famous person I have ever met in person is probably Kieron Dyer (England soccer international, not sure if it counts, because I went to school with him). I've also spoken to and got the autograph of Richie Richardson (West Indies cricket legend) but not sure that that counts, had a drink in a pub with Iwan Roberts (Walsh international soccer player) and been ten pin bowling in the next lane to Craig Forrest (RIP) - who used to be Canada soccer teams goalkeeper.
In England, Kieron Dyer is more famous than Mandy Moore, I guess in the rest of the world probably the opposite! I hope there is no other thread like this, I couldnt find one!
