Help! I just got a MAC! Can't handle pictures
DISCLAIMER-I tried to search for something similar and came up with nothing, so my most sincere apologies if this has been posted before.
I have used Windows all my life, and now I am using OsX. I am getting used to it, but not fast enough. I am afraid I may not be compatable. (lame joke, huh?) First of all, I cannot figure out how to upload pictures from my digital camera using USB. Secondly, the photos that I have uploaded (thanks to my boyfriend) I cannot really edit. I have been messing around with iPhoto, but I want something more like photoshop. Any ideas? I also cannot figure out how to get my boyfriend logged out of iChat and myself logged in, but this is not as important as the pictures. Can any of you help me? |

I'm not much of an OsX user, really, but I'm very sure that they make Photoshop for Mac. Actually, that's pretty much one of the only reasons to get a Mac, with maybe Pagemaker or Quark coming in second.

the upload should be easy. iphoto should auto-recognize the camera, and ask you if you want to upload. details on what you're using, etc? error messages? etc?
editing? get photoshop. i tried to get along with out it, but it's kind of necessary. i think there might be a mac version of photoshop elements for basic stuff. ichat doesn't support multiple login names. go to preferences, accounts. change it there. if you want/need multiple log in names...look and see if there is a trillian client for OSx, or use AIM. i'm an ichat fanatic, but it's just my laptop...

here's how i do it all with 10.3.9.
do you have tiger? it might be similiar. to save you the trouble of having to edit preferences with iChat... you should be able to set up multiple users on your machine. go to your system preferences and click on accounts (on the bottom left) yup. iPhoto should auto-recognize your camera when it's plugged in. if not, you should be able to here's what iPhoto help says: You can import photos from a digital camera if both your computer and your camera have built-in Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports and your camera is compatible with iPhoto. To see a list of cameras that are compatible with iPhoto, visit the iPhoto website. To import photos from a digital camera: 1. Connect your camera to your computer using a USB cable. To learn more about connecting a digital camera to your computer, click "Tell me more." IMPORTANT: If your camera has a "sleep" mode, make sure it is disabled or set to a time increment long enough to allow your images to download. For more information, see the instructions that came with your camera. As soon as your camera is connected, iPhoto switches to import mode and your camera appears in the Source list. If nothing happens when you connect your camera, check your camera to see if it's turned on and set to the correct mode. For which mode to choose, see the instructions provided with your camera. 2. Type a roll name for the group of photos you're importing in the Roll Name field. 3. Type a description for the group of photos in the Description field. 4. If you want to delete photos from your camera as soon as they are imported, select the "Delete items from camera after importing" checkbox. 3. Click the Import button. To cancel photo transfer at any time during your import, click Stop Import. IMPORTANT: Wait until all photos have been transferred into iPhoto or click Stop Import before disconnecting your camera. If your camera has a "sleep" mode, make sure it is disabled or set to a time increment long enough to allow your images to download. For more information, see the instructions that came with your camera. After you finish importing your photos, click the Eject button or drag the camera's icon from the Finder desktop to the Trash (if necessary), turn off your camera, and then disconnect it from your computer.

Graphic Converter (see http://www.lemkesoft.com/en/index.htm) is a Mac-only Photoshop-Lite-like program that can do most if not all the things you'll want to do, and at a fraction of the price of Photoshop. As for downloading the picture from the camera, go to the camera's manufacturer's website to see if an OSX driver is available.

Mutliple logins would probably be the best option for the iChat thing, you don't even need to password them. To set it up:
Open System Preferences Click on the Accounts button Click the plus sign at the bottom Enter the name, short name and password if wanted Done! All the applications now will have separate preferences, favourites and whatnot.

If you don't like iChat, try AdiumX. It supports a crapload of IM programs.
As for the digital camera, you can download them from the camera using the Image Capture app, and you can even set it up to make a website of the pics. Check out the "Help" files for more info. And, we're glad you've switched. (to the better choice)

It takes a little while to get used to making the switch, but it's totally worth it. I remember not knowing how to even install a program when I got mine. It's so much more simple than windows that I couldn't figure it out :P
if you happen to get your hands on Photoshop, it can import pictures off digital cameras itself, and it's a little more organized than iPhoto, which has a really weird way of storing files.

Re the camera: This is the simplest way: When I plug my camera in and turn it on, it appears as a "removable drive" icon on my desktop. By double-clicking on the icon, I can browse it and drag files (pics) from it to my Mac.
Re Graphics Convertor; I use it and for the price, it's great. It has one of the lowest loss rates for converting pics (rotating, for example) of any program on the Mac platform.

That'll teach you to get a mac. (JK)
Seriously, I concur with the others. No matter what you're using, mac or PC, whatever program you're using should automatically recognize the camera and the download should be step by step from there. If adobe does make photoshop for the mac then I'd definetly get it. I just got photoshop CS2 and I so want to learn it. Just dont have the time to spend with it right now. And if the price turns you off, then (keep this quiet now) download it. |
