Stabity on Network
Ok at work im tring to make are Network stable. Beacuse im tired of getting to work and it not working. Theres multiple problems we have had. The biggest problem we had is that we bought a NAS unit. And it acted realy funky. One day it would work great. The next it wouldnt let anything connect to it. So id half to turn off all computers and then reset it all after a hour or 2. And that kills alot of work that could of got done. Then out of the blew the NAs unit just stop working. So i unpluged it and just used a local computer and put the files on there. How ever i dont wanna keep it like that cuz then that computer has to be on at all times. And i dont like that. So im looken for a solution. A new Better NAS unit or some other methoid. Lemme know what u guys suggest.
Im sure theres 1000 questions you guys and i cant realy think of any of them so ill let u guys ask them then ill answer them !. Thanks

Ive talked to my boss and he wants me to show him the diffrent options so no real Price limite atm. Id rather just see whats out there and see how much it costs. Pros/Cons of Each methoid and show him and see what he wants to do.

Im sure my boss has no problem spending money if ever morning when he turns hes computer on it connects to the network properly. Just tell me what you guys think i need. Now keep in mind This network only has 12 computers. And we do not have any broadband connection.

First question: What kind (bradn model) of NAS is it?
Second question: Have you done a firmware upgrade on it? Sometimes, bugs in a new system are from it being manufactured with older firmware. Check the manufacturer's web site for updated firmware.

We use Compaq (now hp) servers at my work. They have been very stable for us. Are you just looking for a file server? I would check out their website.
You could get by with a beefed up workstation. However, the redundancy of a server would result in more stability. Anyhow, my vote is to go buy a entry level server from compaq. However, there are more options than you can shake a stick at. You will hear from the other folks on this board as to what their opinions are. Now if it were me, I would build a domain with a pdc, bdc, WINS, DNS, etc. This would be a huge overkill for your situation.

Ack! I had my wires crossed. Thought NAS= Network Appliance Storage.
Here's the link to the instructions for applying the firmware upgrade D Link You should ignore my advice. A server is overkill in your situation. Try to get your NAS up and running. Maybe you should give D Link a call.

First things first, make sure that you have the latest firmware for all your hubs/switches/routers/NAS. Make sure that all of your settings are similar, ie, subnet masks, domain name, workgroup name. Seriously though, don't worry about leaving a computer on, from my experince it has made equipment more reliable! -SF |

I second saltfish's comment about leaving equipment on makes it more reliable. Numerous studies I have read indicate that leaving them on is good for the computer. Like a car, starting up is the most stressfull time for a computer. Particularly for the power supply. At my place of work we have around 150 servers and workstations in our data center that are on 100% of the time. Very little problems occur. When they do, it's usually when we turn a server off and the disk drives refuse to spin back up when the server is turned back on.

Ok, I'm assuming you got the firmware from here:
http://www.dlink.com/products/suppor...d=277#firmware There's a link on that page to download the manual as well as the firmware. I think , before you do anything else, you should download that manual and read through it to see how to upgrade the firmware. Then, follow the instructions and do the upgrade, if necessary ( you should be able to get the current firmware version from the system).

i dled the fireware and i know how to upgrade it. But i dont know how to get into the Panel to upgrade it. It tells you to type in a the ip address into the browser. I typed in the ip it said and got nothing. It said in the manual that the ip address can be diffrent than 192.168.1.111 like staded in manual. Anyone know how i can find the ip of my hardware. Switch's / NAS i would like to find ip off.

Hello, good evening, and bollocks.

Instructions on how to find the IP address are on Page 16 of your manual.
To find the IP address: Quote:
192.168.0.65 I would recommend connecting the drive to just one PC for the firmware upgrade -- if the network becomes unstable during the process of upgrading the firmware, you could damage the unit. |

You need to type: ping "device name" Where device name is the name of the NAS that is used on the network; if said device is "storage" then you "ping storage" -SF |
