network issue.
So i have a brother in law that had a nasty virus, and took over his whole computer. so i end up dumping a new version of an operating system on his computer. clean it all out.
its a dell. so i get everthing reinstalled and then got the drivers from dells website, and all is good. now to get the internet to update and scan and windows update. well i had an exclamation point on the NIC, so installed the driver for that. so now i update the antivirus but i am gettting a limited to no connectivity exclamation point. how did i get that but get the update to my antivirus? so i do a repair, and it will not let me renew the ip address. so when i type in: ipconfig/all all i get is: the nic name: INTEL (R) PRO/100 VE NETWORK CONNECTION primary dns suffix was blank. node type: broadcast ip routing enabled: yes wins proxy enabled: yes autoconfiguration ip address: 169.254.83.208 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 default gateway was blank and i have no dns servers. I mean i got to update my antivirus but no webpage and it wont let me renew my ip address or let me repair the connection. I went into the services area and tried to see if anything was disabled or what. can i get any help? it looks as if i am not getting any real ip address but one that was given to me by the computer itself. i dont know what other steps to take. |

the 169 address is a false positive, for lack of better term. It appears to be a real address, but is not. Back in the Windows 98 days and before, a PC not getting an address would show: 0.0.0.0. Now it will always show something from the 169 block, fooling you into thinking you got a real IP Address. You don't.
Try setting it manually. Or try setting your DHCP server, if you know it.

How are you connecting to the Internet? ADSL? Cable? More likely than not you're connecting through a device that will provide you with an IP address. Try doing an ipconfig /release followed by a ipconfig/renew and see if you get an IP that way.
Otherwise you'll have to go into the settings of your connection and configure the IP manually.

well ipconfig/release; renew wont work. it says its disabled. or something like that.
i am going thru a dsl modem. well this is my sisters computer so they wouldnt have a DHCP server. nor do i have one. but i have dabbled in it a little. i did get that it was a "fake" ip address because i saw no dns servers. usually they list to when i put in :ipconfig/all so what are my options? setting it manually? well since its plugged directly into the modem, what scheme of ip address/dns/gateway do i use? subnet mask?? do you think that now that i have the drivers for my NIC installed, i could call thier INTERNET TECH SUPPORT and maybe i am doing something wrong? |

have you power cycled the DSL modem? If not, switch it off and on and then try the release/renew option.
Is the NIC enabled? you can disable/enable the NIC itself in the Network connections page. Otherwise, I'd call tech support for the dsl company - you may need to install/configure software on your PC to get it to get an IP address (PPPoE)...

so i ended up calling the ISP first, and they had to reset something on thier end. maybe just the modem.
now that I have fixed this computer everytime i pull up google, it says, that "I am not authorized to do this" but will open up google in a new window.. hmm. i totally cleared the hard drive, and reinstalled the OS. shouldnt that clear a virus that it may have had? |
