Well Shauk, I must say, I definitely didn't care for electronic music before you started sending me stuff! But now I think it's awesome. However, these songs really don't do anything for me, I think YOUR stuff is much more interesting!
But thank you for introducing me to Ronald Jenkees music! I <3 his stuff!

I love House/Dance, but I just can't handle Trance or D&B... it sounds so much like a broken record to me. I need fantastic changes of tempo and very little repetition. Tell me you've got some music out there I'd like. All of this sounds like drum and bass to me.. lots of muted symbol/clash sounds with artificial bass 'clicks'..

As I am very much so in to trance and drum and bass - I like all of the tracks. Especially the first and second.
Should make for an awesome set.

well as one of the few other trance lovers around, I'll comment just didnt get a chance, I'm hella busy these days.
you definitely have a style. its very progressive. imo its a little difficult for home listening, that might help to explain why nobody else seems to get it, but on the dance floor with the right crowd it could work very well. progressive (as well as techno) is definitely a style of music that needs to be experienced not just listened to. its a little hard to convey the message over the internet to people who have never been out on the dance floor and enjoyed the experience. you are already doing what I could not by evangelizing trance on TFP because I gave up trying to find anyone else who liked it here years ago. :P but now there's at least both of us (and will). I keep trying to get a mix together but every time I record one I'm not happy with the result because I think probably no one else would want to listen to it. I also like just about every genre of electronic dance music including dnb, just don't get much of a chance to listen to it. I had a roommate who listened to LTJ bukem incessantly for a few months.

Yeah I pick my music based on the reaction my body parts get when i hear it.
but true, not so much for casual listening, but more for envisioning that "vibe" where people are just on the floor, smiling, having a good time, dancing, so on. I really truely enjoy trance as one of the last genres of music that can make a person smile, considering there is so much out there that does just the opposite. Metal is pretty angry, Country is depressive, Emo is.... well, emo. Rap, not gonna go there..... Music kinda runs the gamut of emotions, and it's why no one would play "hurt" by nine inch nails on a dance floor full of happy people. buhaha. the scene in Seattle is pretty hoppin. there were about 1200 people at the Sasha and Digweed show last night... tuesday night, 1200 people. Venue was sold out so wonder how many more would have gone if they could have. |

Trance makes you want to vomit. You may want to have that looked at.
My sarcasm detector is beeping. Ok so lets face facts, your food is soundly in place in your stomach, You don't actually have the need to empty the contents of your gut upon hearing certain kinds of music. All you have to say is, it's not my thing, I don't like it, I like X better than Y Now I think I'm going to get offensive here but, Junglists are the biggest bunch of crybabies I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. They're the rednecks of the EDM scene, if they aren't showing off their love for Pabst Blue Ribbon or yelling "boh, rewind selectah", they aren't happy, so they have to try and fuck shit up for people who are happy, they have to jump on people who listen to Trance. Trance listeners don't have any issue at all with admitting they like Drum & Bass too but the minute that happens, some Junglist gets all cryface over it and acts personally offended. And oh god, dear god, if a Junglist admits liking Trance? you may as fucking well paint a bullseye on his ass, he is now labeled a "Fag" by his Junglist peers. There is no room for diversity amongst them. I saw too much of this shit play out in the last scene I was in, It's also why I don't tend to participate on electronic music forums. People don't talk about music on those forums. It's sad. Last edited by Shauk; 04-23-2008 at 01:44 PM.. |

tsk tsk tsk..
now was that rant really necessary? Ok here's my take. We've gone through this before. I actually wasn't trying to go down this road again, because well I just don't like trance or gabber or techno and several other genre's of Electronic. now am I saying this just because I'm a DnB head? No. Fuck that shit ok. You can put that shit on the shelf. You can't seriously claim that Junglists are the biggest crybabies in the industry. I was heavy in the scene for years and you know what I saw and who I saw cryin? The fuckin' trance heads who only wanted to chew on some goddamn rolex'es and wave their goddamn pretty lights in my face while they scream PLUR.. do you feel the PLUR?? If that didn't kill the fucking mood.. I don't know what would. You will get purists and elitists in every genre of music. I see it in the DnB realm, the trance realm and everywhere in between. It's just a simple evil of the industry. Big fucking deal. Ya know why I got so heavy into DnB and Jungle? Because it was an experience. It wasn't some jerkoff throwing a laptop onto a table and plugging in a few pieces of equipment and playing a setlist. I saw real talent on a pair of TURNTABLES in the scene. Yeah I'm elitist when it comes to tables. It's a dying art because of the massiveness that is enveloping the electronic scene. DnB and Junglists seem like they're more dedicated to keeping this around. I like tons of different kinds of music. Give me a good breakbeat set and I'm happy.. give me some metal and I'm happy.. you get the point. Trance isn't my thing. You say trance makes a person smile.. that's good for you. It doesn't make everyone smile. that's just how it works my friend. and yes, I'm sure if I listened to trance long enough it would actually make me puke. and goddamn man.. I gave props to Sasha and Digweed. That should have healed the wound I supposedly opened up in you. |

I can't find any of the damn songs on seeqpod or playlist.com, so I'm just going to list them:
Little Star (Cascada Remix) Moonlight Shadow (Groove Coverage) What is Love (Haddaway) - lol, SNL Love me Right (Angel City) Borderline (Michael's Neon Wave Vocal) - Michael Gray Listen to your Heart - D.H.T Endless Summer - Siria Anything by Sasha Million Tears - Groove Coverage Around the World - ATC (La La La La La) Castles in the Sky - Ian Van Dahl This is the kind of music I like. I don't know what you want to call it. but I call it "Dance" or "House". What I meant by calling the above D&B - there's a synthesized drum sound that basically sounds like a compressed wave, no depth to it, just a tskkk, tskkk, tskkk. I hate that sound. Every D&B song I've ever heard had it. And most of the ones above, also had it. It's the first 15 seconds solid of that " Devotion - BRT Instrumental Mix"

n-tsss ... n-tsss ... n-tsss ... n-tsss ...
I do prefer real drums ... give me a little: guggada ... guggada ... guggada ... guggada ... and some "a chicken and a biscuit" or "pat boone debbie boone" and "tangin on the hump" ... YEAH! But really I love all music ... I definitely have my preferences. I enjoyed listening to the songs that Shauk posted. I don't know much about electronic music anymore ... I left that scene back when it was just House, Techno and Industrial (my preference then was Industrial). It still makes me wanna dance though. Gotta love 606, 808, 909 and Simmons drum sounds. There's just something to 'em. Synth pads and sweeps over an aggressive drumbeat just do something to a dance floor that's truly amazing to watch. We do it in my band on some songs ... not the recordings so much because we're just an indie band. But live we'll occasionally do something a little "dancier" and I get to have fun with my Oberheim. no! I wasn't saying I took issue with you not liking it. I just think it's an "attitude" you convey that really rubs people as confrontational when you're like "makes me want to vomit" an obvious hypole. I am all too familiar with people not liking the genre. I'm not really a big sasha and digweed fan, they're a little too chill for my tastes these days, however the northern exposure releases from way back when are still a good baseline for what influenced my musical tastes, so perhaps I should give them a little more credit I'm hung over. nevermind me, lol |

i have trouble with trance for some of the same reasons gucci outlines--and also because as someone else says, this is a form best experienced in a club with good sound outfitted for the space--somewhere like sonotheque in chicago. i like turntablists and was also sucked into d&b through that--two of the best i have ever seen work the form---craze and dj/rupture. both stunning technically and both make sets that have had me dancing like an idiot for a very long time.
but this is only one area i listen to. there are many forms, and most have their own pleasures. i don't really find most dance-oriented material interesting as electronic music, though---it doesn't go in anything like directions that interest me. this may be a function of dousing myself with cash repellent every morning. it's hard to say.

Pushover - Not really my cup of tea. The instrumentation is too harsh.
A Day in Heaven - Honestly, I'm not wild at all about the intro. The percussion is, and I know I'm describing trance, overly simplistic. The three beats on one, the and of one and two are somewhat grating. The choral section manages to create a decent enough contrast to help the listener forget the drums, and while it's not quite as melodic as I might write, it's pretty decent. I also like that Vadney allows the listener to get immersed in the sound instead of just jumping back into the beats. Quite honestly, it makes the beats even better when they do arrive. Overall I think the piece would be great without the first minute or two, or by replacing the heavy drums with a weaker synth beat of some sort. Campfires at dusk - I realize the guitar was thrown in this one to make it sound unique, but it feels out of place. Guitars are best utilized for melody or for background. In this it's the featured instrument, but has the same measure repeating. I would have either given the guitar a melody or allowed it to be quieter and back up another melody. Music is My Weapon - This isn't trance, it's techstep (I think). This isn't something I generally listen to so I don't know if my feedback would be worthwhile. Devotion - Now THIS is trance! Great buildup, not overly simple or complex (for the genre), decent melody on piano; all around quality. In a word: sweet. Rhapsody - I'm glad this wasn't an attempted trance version of Rhapsody in Blue. I actually prefer orchestration in trance as I feel it gives the music more flavor than you might have otherwise. This wasn't bad at all. It seems to me a bit like Daft Punk meets a trance meets a movie soundtrack. Stabilizer - This might sound silly, but I swear I've heard this before. And I don't think it was DNB. It's not bad. I'll check out more later, the phone is ringing again. |

MY EARS! OH MY GOD!! DAMN YOU TO HELL!!
I'll listen to straight trance before anthem trance (which is the category I place that song in) but then I'm not the trance head so I could be wrong so in my view, yes Jinn you're wrong Ya know, I was thinking, trance may have been ok eventually, if people like Oakenfold and Van Dyk didn't go so mainstream and fuck it all up. Sort of like what DJ Aphrodite did with DnB .. fucker had it then let it go just for a few bucks. |

yea another thing, for the sake of reviewing the songs, you can go ahead and ignore the 1st minute and last minute of each song for the most part.
those parts are dry and lifeless pretty much for the intent of giving DJ's a "dry dock" to mix from/in |

I dunno, I would take issue with that analysis of the trance scene. It did get way too big and commercial around 1999/2000, but it blew up and the hangover stage was finished around 2004. Maybe it was true somewhere around 5 years ago but the trance scene has moved far beyond van Dyk and Oakenfold. Paul van Dyk has always had the same style, it just got popular, I dont see how thats his fault. I dont particularly like it but you cant accuse him of being a sellout. Oakenfold is a different story, his style changed vastly from goa to commercial dance, but these days he's kind of a joke even in the trance scene. Oakenfold sets from the mid 90s are still revered but he's irrelevant in the 2000s, he's back to playing small clubs.
Might post reviews of the tracks when I get a chance.

see, every Van Dyk album I've listened to sounds much the same to me.. the kids I dig switch it up quite a bit. Like I said I'm not a trance authority so my take on the trance scene could be way off base now, but I'm going on what I saw and heard when I was big in the scene. So basically, my opinion of trance isn't going to mean shit to those who are still in that scene.. just like someone who isn't in the scene I enjoy won't hold much weight with me.

A song that is kinda like this (don't get mad at me for saying this! I mostly listen to other genres) is Clubbed to Death by Rob D. I absolutely love that one. |
