good that you are putting the pieces together.
A good lesson learned that really shows that the early bird does get the worm. You'll know for future summers to try to secure employment earlier rather than later. good luck!

This might not go over well here, but I'll let you in on a secret that kept me from being homeless for my first two years of college job seeking: Lie your ass off.
"I'm transferring to the college in this area, so I want to have a job that will last me for the next few years." *3 months later* "I have chosen not to transfer, goodbye." I have no regrets. I'm an honest person otherwise, and a completely honest worker. I did it for two jobs- and for those two by the end of the 2nd week, I was the best employee in the entire building. Also, nothing was that blunt in execution. For both jobs, I was hired through a job fair or employment agency (hired by the company to get employees). When I actually showed up for the job, the managers assumed I'd be leaving in 3 months anyway. They had no control over who was hired. Corporate headquarters sent down new employees every once in a while... If I didn't get those jobs I wouldn't be in college right now. It's a matter of survival. *rant time* People ages 18-20something have ruined the job market for others in the age group. I'm not a loser. I will come to work on time, do my job, not slack off, and be nice to customers. I don't have neon colored hair or piercings (No offense to those who do. However, reality is that it does effect your chances of getting hired in some places). If I'm hired, you'll get a wonderful employee. The kids of yesteryear have ruined things for the kids of today. *end rant* |

Jobs are hard to come by if you don't have connections or experience in related fields. At least that's what i've been noticing. All my friends who have jobs got them from people they know, or through their Universities, with the possible exception of one or two.
All of the jobs i've gotten were through people I knew. Or people I knew recommending me to the higher ups. And as such, i've been tempted not to try to get a different job outside of what I do now, since my current job pays higher than minimum wage and has some other benefits. But i've sworn to myself that I will at least try to get a job on my own (as opposed to one just given to me) next summer. This will give me time to work on my resume, which hasn't been touched in 2-3 years.

i used to say that i am probably going to transfer down here and that i wont be leaving.... every hiring manager(being a former one) looks to have workers that stay longer than 3 months but i found out as a manager that its almost a pipe dream, people quit all the time i would just sell yourself and say that even if you go back to school tell them that you usually come back everyweekend(even if you dont) or that you have a schedule where you dont have classes on a monday(so you can almot work 4 days if you come back) just tell them what they want to hear and they will hire you sure you might not leave on the best terms if you quit but most times you get sick of the job(especially min wage summer jobs) after 3 months and you dont want to come back next summer OR another idea which i used one summer was get a job at a costco up at college and then transfered to the one by my parents house when i went home for the summer, this works well because(well costco anyway) loves keeping its employees in the company

Do a good job and maybe they'll ask you back the next year. That happened to me at two different jobs. Glad you got something. For future reference: did you check with any temp agencies in town?? They are an excellent way to get temporary summer jobs. Another industry that hires BIG time just for summer labor is the construction industry. Home building and construction usually takes place in the summertime. Although it's hard work it pays quite well in most places.
Glad you found a place to good. Good luck there.

You solved your problem; great. What I was going to say was, take your photographic skills and try to make some cash off them. I'm going to say the "W" word -- weddings. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass but it pays. You wouldn't get the huge weddings, but if you advertised a package for 300/400, even with flyers at supermarkets, you'd get calls. The wedding industry is a huge ripoff, and somebody offering a reasonable job at a reasonable price would get some real interest among the folks with lower budgets; they're more fun to work with that the nouveau riche snobs anyway, trust me. My wife is a minister sans congregation who'll marry people who seem real about it, whether or not they're in her denomination. So I've seen the underbelly of a few weddings.

Summer jobs I had while attending UC Davis:
Clean up crew at what is now called "G street Pub" Pizza Delivery for Woodstocks (simply the best damn job ever) Landscaping, house painting, and home repair Busser at Chevy's in Dixon Usually, I'd had two or three jobs simultaneously. No time to party, but I had cash at the end of the Summers.

During the school year, I work at the California Aggie, making pretty decent money (around $400/mo) being a photographer and asst. photo editor. If I don't get the assistant photo editor position again this year, I'll just transfer from this safeway (here in Eureka) to one of the safeways in Davis.

I worked for a landscape company and paid my way through college. I didn't have a car or photo equipment and I'm always suprised by how many "poor" people can't see why they're poor or even what the word poor means. I'd love to pull some of these kids away from the security of their familes and drop them into a 3rd world country for a month.
The time to get a summer job is in early spring before you finish school. One week after I finished school I was back landscaping working 12 hours a day almost 7 days a week. Other than my living expenses, everything I made went directly into a bank account for school. I ended up with money to invest after I graduated. |

I agree that looking for a job early, even though you wont get out of school until later, is a major help. I applied for a job at the Post Office's Bulk Mail Center back in February. I got the job and didn't start working until the end of June. Even though I won't be working for that long this summer, I'm getting paid an insane wage for just a sumemr job. Plus there has been open overtime for the past two weeks resulting in even bigger paychecks. That should get me a nice amount of cash for school.

Yeah, February is the big month. At my job (grocery store) they start making the holiday schedule in March, so any applications left after that is useless. It's amusing to see all the hopeful/desperate people that come in later with resumes, we'd get several a week in May/June.
