I'm bored with my life...
The title says it all. I'm bored with my life right now. What kind of things, other then the bar scene (which I'm never hitting again) are there to do? Share some hobbys and ideas. Thanks.

Macrame? knitting? Origami?
But seriously, folks, if any of the colleges or townships near you have any adult education courses, look into something that's different. (Places like the Learning Annex, and other places have tons of interesting and strange classes) I like wine tasting courses Cooking courses are a lot of fun for me (I'm a frustrated chef, it's something I've always wanted to do, so the classes are great therapy for me) Photography is also interesting for me, and going to galleries where other people have their work exhibited. What are five things that are interesting for you?

The only things that are really yours in life are memories, the stories you can tell. So you want to get someplace where _many memories are made, daily. That usually means something real. or at least intense. Along these lines:
* Volunteer for the local suicide prevention hotline. You'll never be bored, you'll learn a lot. * Go work in a soup kitchen. I did this; ended up running it, some nights. The people that walked in the door.... We had nicknames for the regulars: Hairy Prophet, Doorway Dancer, more. And some of our "customers" I still know and say hi to. *Local theater productions. This _isn't_ real, but the egos are. You may not get on stage, but there are plenty of geek jobs around that'll still make you "with the show:" props, lighting, whatever. Public access TV is good, too, if they have that up in Canadia. Usually they train you for free or little money, and then people are after you to work on their shows. And after a while, enough of them owe you that you can get them to work on a show _you_ put together. On punk music, maybe. *Choirs. Join a community choir, one that performs. Singing's fun, and the social dynamics inside a choir are even more intense than in the theater. In a large, ongoing choir, there's usually a marriage every year or two. What all these activities have in common is that they are all little worlds -- activities that a lot of people work together on and grow very tight while doing. They all become communities and can also lead to outside social scenes that are tied into them. Find something like that and you'll get to know a lot of new people really well and, with luck, never be bored. Last edited by Rodney; 07-04-2004 at 06:35 PM.. |

You could take up everquest, then you'd have no life!
Not trying to piss off the EQ fans, but I lost a good friend to that game (took him down so hard he's joined a cult just to get some "meaning" back into his life) It can take over your every waking moment very, very easily. Then again, as long as you come up for air on occasion, it can be quite entertaining.

Start a martial art? Useful / keep fit and fun heh im well into escrima at the moment.
Try a new game / genre of game if your into computer games. MMORPG's take up a whole lot of time but as date the banana said, be careful you dont kill your social life with it. Any of the volunteer work above, or whatever else you can find its all good. Learn a new skill - im puttin in for some japanese and photography night courses next year. A few suggestions.

I suggest travelling though for the original ideas. Seeing things from some new place could be just the thing you need to get some joy again.

If you can get over the "nerd" stigma, Dungeons and Dragons is the most fun thing to do. You can waste 6 hours so easily, its silly.
Not counting snack costs, you spend 40 bucks, and you have everything you as a player need. However, you do need an imagination, and a sense of fun. Sometimes, a lot of cunning to get around some situations, and the ability to think quickly. But, its great fun! Paintball is also fun. Project car, if you have the cash. Exercise always works to kill some time. Try creative things, like hiking, biking or canoeing. |

he's on the ball. if you really want to spice up your life, force yourself to do something you wouldn't expect yourself to do. sometimes when you're thrown into different situations you adapt and learn a great deal, expanding your life. when i moved in with my roomates, they were the type of guys i would never have voluntarily moved in with. and it ended up providing me with a whole new perspective on life i never would have found. instead of trying to pick what you want to do, you can let it be random. print out a list of local classes and events and tape it to the wall. throw a dart blindly and see where it hits. do it, take the class. you may end up sewing, dirtbiking, dancing, or cooking. either way, the worst you'll end up with is a new skill. want to travel? that commercial where the college kids show up at the airport not knowing where they're going to be going and pick something at random from the monitors would definitely be a break from boredom. |

go to your local film museum or art film theater and join as a member and start attending the film festivals.
I just watched Double Indemnity with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck as part of the LA in Film Festival at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria Queens, NYC.

I would normally say videogames, books, computers etc., but you probably want something more active. Workout, or pick up a sport, maybe go hiking, or skydiving . The possiblities are endless. There are plenty of things to do out there, it just take the time, money and energy to actually do it.

a little quote from Arty Schopenhauer
What makes men hard-hearted is that everyone has sufficient troubles of his own to bear, or thinks he has. What, on the hand, makes them so inquisitive is the polar opposite of suffering - boredom.

What about picking up some new instrument? I've always wanted to learn how to play the cello. And once Im out of school and have the time, I just might do that.
Culinary Arts classes (as was mentioned) would be awesome. It's fun, engaging, and I bet you can meet a lot of new interesting people. Or take a foreign language. Again, it's fun, engaging, and filled with interesting people. Plus, you can plan to take a trip out to the land of whatever it is you're studying. |

You mention that you like writing and food. Why not try your hand as a food critic? You also mentioned film, you could do the same with film.
Write a book, start a band, get into a local "scene" (other than the club scene, since you mentioned distaste for it). Is there a good rock/punk/emo/polka circuit in your area? Check it out. Go to local shows, find bands you've never heard, follow the ones you like. Get to know them. Start helping at the shows (tearing down equipment, running the soundboard, polishing their boots, whatever). It can be a lot of fun. As has been mentioned, volunteer or try learning a new skill. All very fun and hella rewarding. Want something off the wall (but profitable)? Learn magic. I used to make tons of money (and meet new people) doing magic shows around my area. I still find some people that know me as "the magic guy", even though I haven't done BIG shows in almost a year (college cut down on my performing time). If you like cars, learn to work on them. I'm teaching myself bodywork and custom painting, and it's been really rewarding.

Get some good books to read. There are books for *every* type of person out there.
Make some art. Pick up a pencil and do some doodling. Take your dog for a walk. If you don't have a dog, take yourself to the nearest park and just hang out. Go on a road trip, just for the sake of leaving.

I was in the same pool as you once apon a time, kept busy at daytime with work but at night I was very board. I ended up playing a lot of games to pass the time and started to take what I did have at that point for granted. I lost a lot of mates because I would prefer to stay home tuned in to my computer. In the end it go ridiculous and I ended up throwing away my computer, after I realised what had happend to me one bedtime in the early hours of the morning.
My point is change is great but it doesn't mean you have to leave your past behind.

I love adult ed. I've taken spanish and candle making. I'm thinking about volleyball (just cuz I love to play) and tennis (my husband plays but I'm horrible).
Does your city have an art hop/walk? We started going to ours each month which started leading to other activities in the community. Now we're also going to a poetry slam each month. We try to grab different friends to join us each month so it's always a change of pace. Getting some friends around to go hiking/ camping always leads to an adventure. Choose and activity you'd never do by yourself and get everyone fired up about trying it together. We hiked a mountain (half dome) and went white water rafting. |
