Just always remember the first rule of clubbing : Baby seals are okay, but bull seals will fuck you up.
Oh, wait, you mean like with the dancing and flashing lights and pounding bass. Can't help you there, I've never been.

Its been a while since I went clubbing, but two things still stick out in my head... I never brought a purse. I'm one of those freaks who carried things in my bra if I didn't have pockets (although I wear jeans a lot, so I usually have pockets). *shrugs* Less likely to get swiped and all that. My girlfriends, though, carried purses... In the 80s and early 90s when I was still clubbing a lot, tiny little purses on those long straps were pretty fashionable, so you could sling them across you and carry them anywhere. My girlfriends now either carry a purse and carry it to the dance floor with them, or leave it with the bartender or check it (if the club has a coat check sort of thing).
All that to say I don't carry a purse and don't have a farkin' clue what to do with the thing. As for your drink... Absolutely, positively, do not leave your drink unattended! I suggest waiting until you've finished your drink before you head out to the dance floor. And dancing... *grins* I personally don't think anyone really knows how to dance anymore. But then again, I'm a retired competitive amateur ballroom dancer. Anyway, I always just got out there and moved. Its pretty easy to sit back and watch what others are doing out there before you go out to dance, and then just... dance. It really is that simple. Have fun! I miss clubbing!

Purse I don't know about, since I'm a guy.. coat check usually works, or leave it with a friend who doesn't dance. How to dance? let the music move you put on some of the type of music you like at home, and dance a bit. It'll help your confidence. And remember, nobody is usually good at dancing, and everyone looks like a fool, so don't worry about it.

Avoid bringing a purse if you can help it. Theft is not uncommon.
Go out prepared to enjoy yourself, try not to get too riled up at the drunkards bumping into you and whatnot. As far as dancing, use the hips and take it from there.

Some clubs have check-in desks / people who will check your coat and/or valuables (some are coat only). And, they either charge you up front some amount like $3 (in SF), or you have to tip them something when you get your stuff back (or they just ask for $1 when you get your stuff back).
If you are a girl, all you have to do is move your hips around like Suave said and you will look damn good dancing. Not so easy for guys, dunno why girls can move a little but look good; guess you guys are more curvy. |

Best advice I can give is to not go alone. Take a friend - or better yet, a group - and just have some fun. They don't all have to dance, but at least the non-dancers can help look after your purse/drink when you hit the floor.
And the running man is a perfectly acceptable way to move to any song older than 15 years.

I find that the most important thing is club selection. You want one with enough loft to get the ball in the air, but with a long enough shaft that it's comfortable to swing without bending or swaying too much.
Remember: nice, long, slow backswing, and then hit THROUGH the ball to a good, high follow-through. That's the sum total of my knowledge about clubbing. |

I have no clue about the purse, but I see a lot of girls dancing with it on their arm, or they don't have one at all. All you really need is your ID and a few bucks anyway.
As far as dancing goes, I dunno, just practice a lot. Ask one of your friends to practice dancing with you or something. Or just get really drunk and then you won't care. Most girls I know learned how to dance by dancing with other girls.

Bring friends, don't bring a purse, watch your drink, see how others are dancing and start with that, and enjoy yourself. If you do all that I guarentee you'll have a blast.

Take friends. Dress nicely. Don't take a purse. Wear pants with pockets. Don't ever leave your drink unattended or out of sight. Don't drink too many girly drinks (the sugar will give you a killer hangover as well as get you drunker faster). Honestly, if you like draft beer--stick with the draft beer. Don't forget to hydrate.
And at the end of the night, drink at least 3 glasses of water before hitting the hay--even if you don't drink.

Back in the day when I went dancing (heh) my girlfriends and I always had purses, and yes they are annoying. Since we all had them, we'd check them in at the door, or when that wasn't available, we'd either carry them around (sucks) or sometimes if it seemed safe enough, we'd make a small pile in the middle of us and dance around that.
As for not knowing how to dance...dancing these days is all about how you feel when you listen to a particular song. The easiest thing is to just close your eyes and go with the music - move as and when you want to - some songs you hardly have to move at all...just make sure you like the music! If you enjoy it, the dancing will come naturally. I can't dance if I hate the music, I don't get people who will just dance to anything.

Depending on the club, if a guy comes up behind you and slowly starts rubbing his genitalia against your behind, that is his way of saying "hello, may I dance with you?" So don't get freaked out. If you don't want to dance with him, all you gotta do is walk away.

I'm going to have to agree with the no purse rule. I always wear pants with pockets..all I take to a club is cash, my ID, and maybe a chapstick.
I would highly advise not going to a club alone. It's safer and much more fun to go with friends. As for dancing, don't worry how you look. Just move to the music, and you'll be fine. Or ask a girlfriend how she does it before you go.

We can't recommend drinks for you because its a personal preference. For me, I like to drink a bottle of Canadian, rum and coke, and Gin7.
They don't just sit, drink, and dance in clubs, we talk. We hit on other people, pick them up, etc. Pretty much anything within the realm of sexual harassment that aren't allowed in the outside world

Is this situation (the one you describe, Siege) typical for most clubs ? (I was not sure what the context of 'depending' was, if a majority or a minority of clubs have that type of atmosphere) I know it might not be apropos to this thread, but is there any specific advice (etiquette and asking females to dance, perhaps) for dances in college ? (I don't know if it seems strange or not, but mine actually sponsors a dance probably once a month) BTW - tons more info in this thread - http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=90710 regards, will.

I can't comment on 21+ clubs, because i've never been. In general, if you want to ask a girl to dance, just ask her. Unless she's already on the dance floor (because then you look a little silly. "Uh.. i'm already dancing buddy, and you're already near me. Didn't give me much choice did you?"), then you can either attempt to do the "no pants dance" from behind while clothed, or you could slowly move towards her while trying to make eye contact.
