Looking for new games to try
I am a huge fan of first-person shooters, games like the Half Life series, Soldier of Fortune, Medal of Honor - Stuff like that.
Some criteria: 1. No online multiplayer. It can have it as a alternate feature, but I am not looking for a game that depends upon it. 2. PC based games only. I thoroughly despise consoles. If the only reason you're posting is to harang me about how consoles are better than PCs, don't bother. I'm not saying they are or aren't, I just know what my preferences are. 3. I am perfectly capable of figuring it out, but I do not want anything that requires a degree from MIT, or requires six hands to play. I simply want to have fun and blow stuff up and let off steam from a very high pressure job, that's all. Any and all input would be appreciated.

My SO is currently playing the new Overlord that just came out. He loves it. I haven't seen him but to eat dinner since we got home from the gym four hours ago. I don't think it's online.
He just killed Command and Conquer eight-hundred-and-fifty-something or whatever the newest version is. But I don't think that's considered FPS. We both got addicted to The Darkness on the PS3, but I know that they have a PC version. Good stuff. As a side note... I hate all that multi-key combination crap when all you want to do is kick some bad-guy ass, too. I don't want to press R 4 G L K. Just blow off his head, dangit!

How far you looking to go back? If we ignore the titles you mentioned and start at late 2004 and go to now; this is a list of the "Best and Above Avg." shooters:
Some of those titles also have expansions which I didn't list.

Half life 2 episode 2 is on its way and should be out soon. Other then that I could only advice some multipayer games . Maybe try Red Faction, which I believe came out in 2001 but its still very good.

I'm a big-time PC FPS shooter fan, too.
Nothing more organic than a good mouse and keyboard. FPS games I enjoy: 1. Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 - I know you don't like multiplayer but neither did I until I played this. It's not some deathmatch fest full of walking tanks - it's a team based online play which is just damn fun. Nobody is more overpowered than anyone else. You can be an Imperial grunt in the field with a blaster rifle ducking blasterfire from snowspeeders on Hoth next to other troops ... or you might find yourself with other rebels fighting your way through the death star. If you're an old-time Star Wars fan this one is a must. 2. Doom 3 - criticized because of the lack of any deep plot ... but that's not the point. It's the scariest-looking game I've ever seen. Sure, it's 99% scripted but it's still fun on a fast PC. But I strongly advise using the "duct tape mod" which allows you to have a small weapon-mounted flashlight (not big enough to unbalance the game). 3. FEAR - not as scary as it wants to be but the gun-effects and sounds are as good as it gets. Shooting is rarely this fun. 4. Ghost Recon AW - very cool and feels real. Makes your palms sweat at times. 5. Max Payne 2 - deserves more recognition than it got.

Just played Fear not too long ago. I liked the feel of it and the gun effects. It kind of left me wanting, though. I like retro stuff too. I wish I had a nickel for every hour I played Doom and Wolfenstein when I was in the Navy. My dear lovely wonderfully understanding wife came home with Star Wars - Best of PC the other day - "Looked like something that would be up your alley". Boy she was right. I am going to try Battlefront as soon as I finish the project for work I am working on. Empire at War looks fun, too. I did not care much for Doom3 - Waaaay too dark. I did, however, like Quake 4, but I always came away with a headache for some reason. One of my co workers is really big on the Max Payne series. I tried it and could not get into it. Maybe I'll try it again. Thanks a lot for the suggestions!! Keep em coming!

Then I saw a snow speeder peel off from the ATAT it was attacking and strafed the dark trooper to pieces. Then I read "Got him." That's the cool thing about multiplayer. SWBF is even fun if you're getting your ass kicked because you wouldn't be the only one getting slaughtered but you keep respawning to try to bravely take that bridge or hill - even against the odds. Sometimes you succeed. Of all the games mentioned I still play SWBF - and I've had the game since it was first released in December 2004!

STALKER is my main suggestion. The atmosphere, story and ballistics model are all great. It's dark, but unlike Doom 3 you can use a flashlight and a weapon at the same time. I think it's better and more scary than both Doom 3 and FEAR but if you're looking for a relatively casual gaming experience then it may not be for you - it's pretty intense.
The Call of Duty games have great, cinematic (but very linear) single player campaigns. There is a strong online component if you ever decide you want to try that. The setting is familiar but the rest of the game is good enough to make up for it. Prey also has lots of great single player content, and runs surprisingly well given how nice it looks. The story and weapons are unorthodox. There are plenty of puzzles, twists and visual treats to keep things from getting monotonous. |
