STALKER is my main suggestion. The atmosphere, story and ballistics model are all great. It's dark, but unlike Doom 3 you can use a flashlight and a weapon at the same time. I think it's better and more scary than both Doom 3 and FEAR but if you're looking for a relatively casual gaming experience then it may not be for you - it's pretty intense.
The Call of Duty games have great, cinematic (but very linear) single player campaigns. There is a strong online component if you ever decide you want to try that. The setting is familiar but the rest of the game is good enough to make up for it.
Prey also has lots of great single player content, and runs surprisingly well given how nice it looks. The story and weapons are unorthodox. There are plenty of puzzles, twists and visual treats to keep things from getting monotonous.
