I'm a big-time PC FPS shooter fan, too.
Nothing more organic than a good mouse and keyboard.
FPS games I enjoy:
1. Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 - I know you don't like multiplayer but neither did I until I played this. It's not some deathmatch fest full of walking tanks - it's a team based online play which is just damn fun. Nobody is more overpowered than anyone else. You can be an Imperial grunt in the field with a blaster rifle ducking blasterfire from snowspeeders on Hoth next to other troops ... or you might find yourself with other rebels fighting your way through the death star. If you're an old-time Star Wars fan this one is a must.
2. Doom 3 - criticized because of the lack of any deep plot ... but that's not the point. It's the scariest-looking game I've ever seen. Sure, it's 99% scripted but it's still fun on a fast PC. But I strongly advise using the "duct tape mod" which allows you to have a small weapon-mounted flashlight (not big enough to unbalance the game).
3. FEAR - not as scary as it wants to be but the gun-effects and sounds are as good as it gets. Shooting is rarely this fun.
4. Ghost Recon AW - very cool and feels real. Makes your palms sweat at times.
5. Max Payne 2 - deserves more recognition than it got.

Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done, had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908, whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defended me, I told him that it was his duty to defend me even by using violence." - Mahatma Ghandi
