Canada's Team? (now with a poll!) NSFW
Are the Leaf's Canada's Team.
I often heard the Leafs referred to as Canada's Team. TSN puts a very heavy focus on the Leafs. The CBC puts even more emphasis on them to the point that if you are ever going to see the Canadiens play on Hockey Night In Canada it will be when they are playing the Leafs. The CBC is supposed to represent the people of Canada not just the Leaf fans. So I pose the following question to you: Which Canadian NHL team do you root for? I root for the Habs. I think all Canadian teams and then the US ones come before the Leafs.

*to clarify*
I lived in Calgary in 98- spring 02. I sat and watched and supported terrible flames teams, in a half empty Saddledome. I moved to Edmonton in fall 02. And I have stood and watched and cheerfully endorsed terrible oiliers teams, in an always full or nearly so Collesium. I duly hit 17th, the red mile, during the 04 flames run, but I was well aware that I was surrounded by fair weather fans. I've never actually lived in Vancouver, but if Edmonton, Calgary, Ottowa, Toronto, and Montreal are out of the playoffs, in that order, (and I currently think Sens to Stanley), I will gladly support the Canucks. |

I support the home team. They suck. But I still support them.
- The Canucks suck big. But I love their old jerseys. Oh and I supported them wen I lived in Canuckle land - Calgary is also suck-worthy. But I was probably the only person in TO who had a Flames flag on his car during the last playoff run. And I believe that Pat Quin played the Flames way back (in Atlanta). Plus he coached the Canucks. Yes, Calgary Sucks. - Edmonton? Don't get me started. They suck - Winnipeg? Goddam I miss Winnipeg. Even though they sucked. - Ottawa? the single most arrogant fans in the nation. The nations team? probably they are now. long history (admittedly broked for a bit) oh, ya, Ottawa sucks. - Montreal, they truly suck, especially a couple of nights ago, and tonight, when they will undoubtedly thrash the beloved Leafs again. - Quebec, I never even got to know you quebec But i did like to watch Sundin play there, and the Stastneys. But when it comes down to it, the No-dicks sucked big time. - Toronto is the team. Le Bleu et Blanc. The reason the HNIC was created. ahh those fucking Leafs... can't live with 'em......

Naw... I played hockey, like most little boys in Canada. I just don't like watching it. I'd rather do other things.
During the strike, I didn't miss a thing.

Of course the Leafs, can't beat'em. Going to the play-offs this year again, they just have to work a little harder thats all. Second is the Habs I guess, used to hate them, then the Sens came along. Since moving to Ottawa I've come to hate the Sens even more.

Seriously... I think you should remove that... I don't want to that at all, ever...
..especially considering Montreal has some of the most beautiful women on the planet... and they seem to find their way to the Habs games and dance around in the audience with no bras under tight jerseys... so I can't complain.

I like this quote from an article comparing the cities of Calgary and Toronto in this weekend's Globe, by Chris Koentges: (speaking about the Air Canada Centre)
"...the arena doesn't feel lived in yet. (With Maple Leaf Gardens now an unfinished grocery store, and the Montreal Forum a downtown Pepsi ad - you'll have to let this sink in for a minute - Calgary's Saddledome is the last iconic arena left in the country.) The Stanley Cup banners feel out of place - from anouther century. The seats are too comfortable." Speaking about the Air Canada Centre:

Actually, so will I. I want something to shake this ownership up, kind of like when the beloved leafs went through the wonderful streak in the '80's when they DID ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY NOTHING! and the management/ownership did likewise. grrrrr. what a fuck of a waste of the talents of Sundin, Gilmour, Salming, Sittler, Macdonald and the rest...

Calgary Flames - all the way.
After cheering them on for 18 years and watching in horror while ownership continued to piss away talent and bandwagon jumping fans, I feel like it's our turn. And then some. I'm also among the many that won't be crying themselves to sleep if the Leafs don't make the playoffs. It's time again for that too. Go Flames Go

Wow... given the amount of money the CBC lost because of the strike last year, they are going to be hit hard by the Leafs not being in the playoffs.
Sure the Sens will pick up some of the slack, as will the Canuck... but I am sure they will not see the numbers they would if the Leafs were in the playoffs.

But even that aside, 92%? I know you've employed hyperbole here, but still. and judging from the poll results, if they are to be believed, it looks like we are being alienated by the canucks (26% so far)

Leaf fans are hockey fans true, but still in love with the centre of the universe. The stories that leak out of Toronto about the fabled Blue and White is often painfully skewed and never seems to come with a big enough shovel. Toronto has all the population, right? Well excellent. The Leafs will always get the 7:00 pm slot on HNIC unless they're on the West coast. The rest of the Canadian teams take turns on Saturday nights - the Flames probably only get 2/3 of their Saturday games aired. Is that fair? No, and it shouldn't be - if the Leafs get the majority of the viewership then they should get the best coverage. However, don't expect the rest of the Canadian hockey fans to be happy about it. It's the arrogance that no one can stand, not so much the team. I loved watching the NYR's get their asses kicked season after season while they vainly tried to purchase a Stanley Cup. Same idea. But I had no idea that other teams were taking a hit so that the mediocre Leafs could be aired. How could I know, unless somebody speaks up (like you)? Quote:
I think that the award for arrogance should go to the Sens. However, I see that you took umbrage to my little quip about the founding of HNIC. (*sigh*). While I meant it in the light hearted manner of the tone of my previous (booster-ish) post, I put that there, because that actually is the reason that HNIC was started. NOT that that is any reason for it to continue that way ...

The CBC is a service that our governemnt provides to us. They spend taxpayer dollars. Because they are not running it for-profit (whihc maybe they should) then they have a responsibility to show programming that is appealing to all Canadians. You would therefore expect, at the least, to see some sort of proportianl representation on HNIC. But we don't see that. The early game is always a TO game if they are playing. You can only catch the Canadiens and Senators on HNIC if they are playing another Canadian Team (either TO, West Coast teams when playing on the West Coast) or when TO does not play on a Saturday night (how often does that happen). I can understand this from TSN. From the CBC this sucks.

Ha the Leafs. Good on them for being arrogant pompous babies.
We don't need speed, we don't need skill, we don't finesse. We need rough and tumble old fashion hockey.----which is why this will be the first of many years the Leafs don't get into the playoffs unless they jump into the 21th century. Bye bye Quinn. Bye bye Furgeson. Bye bye half the team if they are serious about winning or at least playing above the caliber of a jr.B team. Yeesh I know this stuff, and I'm a chick. |
