Food Network - Personalities

i go on kicks when i can't tear myself away from the food network. a lot of the time i won't really be watching it, but i'll have it on in the background. the thing is... most of the personalities they have on those shows tend to piss me off. the cooking is very interesting but listening to some of these people talk makes me long for fingernails on a chalk board. which of these are your favorite? most loathed? what makes you feel one way or the other?

emeril
i don't mind emeril that much... but he has several phrases that he just beats into the ground. if we would just cut down on the "bam's" and the "oh yeah baby's" he would be so much more tolerable. the worst part of his shows is how the audience feels the need to cheer when he adds something remotely spicy or alcoholic to the recipe. i just don't get that part...

bobby flay
the stuff this guy cooks is usually pretty good... but he just seems so full of himself. the slight speech impediment drives me nuts.

rachael ray
hate the accent, hate the sense of humor, hate her choice of words. she says the same damn jokes on every show. hire a writer or find a personality please. that being said, her recipes are usually very do-able and well thought out. a lot of the stuff that has found its way into my own cooking has come from her shows.

giada de laurentis
this chic is hot, but i wish she wouldn't feel the need to give the camera an ear-to-ear smile after every single line. good style, good recipes... delivery seems forced and phony

jaime oliver... the "naked chef" dude
one of my favorites. accent is peculiar... but doesn't grind my nerves like rachael ray's does. recipes are exotic and are rarely practical... but his delivery makes his shows easy to watch.

ming tsai
not a fan of the recipes, but his personality doesn't bother me in any particular way

the "how to boil water" crew
this show consists of some guy who is the "expert" and a blond (who is really hot, just see the other thread in here) who is deliberately stupid. no matter what show he is on... the guy always comes across as a real prick. i think the girl is just too stupid in a deliberate sense. i watched two back-to-back episodes where she pretended not to know how to do the same damn thing. aggravating. i think the title of show should be "how to make your blood boil".

alton brown
my favorite on the network. he takes a cerebral method of explaining the cooking that doesn't insult your intelligence that i really like. employs a bit of sketch comedy that is surprisingly creative and doesn't distract from learning about the food.

barefoot contessa
i refuse to listen to one more "healthy living" tip from someone so fat. oh yeah, and a great drinking game would be geared to how many times she says the word "flavor" during the course of an episode. someone buy this lady a thesaurus.

and finally, they could all pull back on telling us how good the food is that they've just prepared. i've yet to hear any of them say what they've fixed borders on the bland or that they've screwed it up. it just gets tired and redundant. also, please stop telling me that everything is so easy to make and that it just takes a little time. if nearly all cooking is that easy... then it's just ridiculous to say it after every show. let me know if it's hard... otherwise i'll just assume i can handle it.

So totally agree on Rachel Ray and the DeLaurentis chick... except eye candy does nothing for me -- they both bug the stuffing out of me - between Rachels accent and horrible delivery and Gianda's annoying smile... gawd... Oh and rachel, darlin' you are cooking, pull your damned hair back.. that drives me crazy.; (but on the positve side, the recipes are easy to follow, though I'm not 100 percent certain that Gianda's are authentic Italian.)

Alton Brown I cannot stand - I find him incredibly insulting that no one will ever be as smart as he thinks he is. He's condescending in his delivery and is just damned annoying, I don't get his popularity at all. It's only food dude, it's not like you are changing the world/

Ming I watch on PBS and like that show a lot, he's got interesting guests that come on the show, often times his parents, it's kinda of interesting to watch, though I could not do the recipes, the ingredients are too hard to find.

I miss Julia Child - -she'd screw things up all the time, make a mess, but she was human, plus she'd get drunk on air, and that made her fun.

When I had FoodTV, I tried to watch Ming Tsai, Alton Brown, Bobby Flay and Jaime Oliver as much as possible, (which still wasn't much) because I just thought that they had the most origionality and made the best food. The rest I either could give 2 shits about, or just haven't seen their show because i'ts fairly new (within the last year).. I'm not sure.

I like Ming Tsai, though it seems he isn't on FoodTV much anymore. I like watching "Home Plate", with Marvin Woods on Turner South (I think its only in the south). He does mainly southern-style dishes, but with new twists. Paula Deen on "Paula's Home Cooking" on FoodTV is a good show also, again its mostly southern food.

Emeril was my first must-watch celebrity chef. I don't have cable, so whenever I go over to someone's house who is hooked up, I turn it on. His personality has really developed, and he is much much more comfortable in front of audiences.

Wolfgang is another of my favorites. He's always cracking jokes.

Be nice to Giada. She's cute.

Tyler Florence has a way with people, but i've seen him get mad at some bad cooks on Rescue.

Calorie Commando must eat a burger. And then another one. He drives me nuts. He's another guy who could use a personality overhaul.

Alton Brown is my absolute favorite because of his scientific approach. And, his personality is very much like mine. It's fun to watch him work because he's always teaching.

Martin Yan, Andreas Viestaad, Ming Tsai, and Lidia Bastianich are all on Sundays on PBS 13. I watch them whenever I get the chance. Excellent shows, excellent information, and they are fun to watch.

Charlie Trotter, also on PBS is the most boring man on earth. His voice puts me to sleep, and his recipes make me slightly ill.

On PBS, I really like America's Cooking, or whatever it's called-- it's from the kitchens of Cooks Illustrated magazine (a magazine that I really like) Chris Kimball, the host, is a typical New Englander, very very dry, but he's not bothersome. The recipes are easy to follow, and I love the best of things that they do - with canned tomatoes, canned chicken stock, stuff like that -- they'll tell you what is the best - it's kind of like the consumer reports of cooking.

Emeril has become a parody of himself... When he first started off there were a few "bams" and the like. It was schtick. It worked.

Now he uses it so much I'm beginning to think the man has tourette's syndrome.

I just can't watch his show, which is a shame because the cooking was great.

I like Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, Alton Brown, James Barber...

I actually like Rachael Ray...I think she's cute.

At any rate, my favorite personality is Alton Brown. I love his approach to cooking and how he breaks it down topically. Good Eats has to be my favorite cooking show.

I also really enjoy Jamie Oliver. It's just a delight to watch him cook. He enjoys himself so much.

Any show with Tyler Florence is awesome. I just think he's the bee's knees. He's so friendly it's great.

Even though I don't really like the food he makes, I love watching Mario Batali cook. He's a cutie and I love that he wears shorts and clogs in the kitchen.

My least favorite? Bobby Flay. He's soooo conceited. Any time he is on...I change the channel.

I think Rachael Ray is hot, but can't stand to hear her talk, plus all the same phrases all the time.
I can't stand IRON CHEF.. the announcers are so annoying, plus what they make is so out of touch, and nothing anyone would ever eat.

As for the rest, I can watch all of them. I get the recipes all the time off of foodnetwork.com.

Alton Brown: love the show, like what he adds

Emiril Live: If I hear one more person get really excited when he adds special ingredients like GARLIC to a dish I am going to shoot myself, come on its garlic TURN OFF the APPLAUSE sign

Essence of Emiril, much better show

Rachel Ray, stop saying EVOO and then following it up saying Extra Virgin Olive Oil, if you are going to say Extra Virgin Olive Oil do not say EVOO. Also take two trips, I am tired of seeing this crazy stack of everything in the world up on something else. your kitchen magically has all the ingrediants you need right in front unlike my kitchen

How to Boil Water, cute blond girl with annoying voice, slow down when you chop stuff, try to get like sized chunks. Stop making a mess.

Paula Dean, when I cook things I do not always use 1 lb of butter.

Giada, do you cook only for your family from the old country? I like your show, and have tried a couple of the things you cook and they are good.

great thread still my biggest peeves applause for Garlic, and EVOO

Good Eats is the only cooking show that I watch, and I watch it every week.

Alton Brown just appeals to the Geek in me. I can certainly see why some people might not like him but for a nerd like me he's the perfect host. His approach to teaching cooking is more about how things work rather than; here is a recipie for cheese sauce (for example).

To paraphrase an old proverb:

If you give a man a recepie for cheese sauce he'll have one meal; if you teach a man how to use a roux to base a sauce on, he will cook for a lifetime.

Love the food channel...love food shows, period.

-Molto Mario is a favorite. Guy loves to cook italian food, all his bowls and various 'accoutrement' are super colorful and have these cool, bold 'italian' designs. Vain son of a bitch. Can talk his ass off. Wins "Best Kibbitzer Award in a Cooking Show".

-God bless Paula Deen. She's such a sweet, happy-go-lucky southern gal. Can't stand her show.

-Sara Moulton is like watching a dripping faucet. Astonishing how she drains every last bit of joy out of cooking. It's like watching someone sew.

-emeril
Don't care for the campy, obnoxious audience "cook-along" theme, but I like emeril. Super friendly, authentic, enthusiastic kinda guy who loves to cook. Handles everything in the kitchen with loving care, which I like a lot. Ate in his restaraunt, "Delmonico" in New Orleans and it was phenomenal. He's the real deal.

-bobby flay
Ditto. Too full of himself. Obnoxious, and brutal with the food, like its a chore. If Vegas ever runs a cooking show on stage, Flay will be their man.

-rachael ray
Hehe. Definitely an acquired taste. I didn't care for her at all at first, then I found out she was Sicilian and it all made sense. I like her now, she can't help herself. Alpha female. Vibrant and hyper-enthusiastic, and pulls it off with charm. I like watching her 'on location' in the real world when she visits restaraunts. I bet she's great in bed.

-giada de laurentis
Unwatchable. Cooking food is an art, not a damn beauty pageant. She needs to host an 'E" Entertainment show instead.

-jaime oliver... the "naked chef" dude
He's...another acquired taste. I don't care for his informal "freestyle" cooking method, flipping pepper mills like a bartender flips rum bottles. That's what he reminds me of - more a bartender parading around than a cook. Seems like a good kid though. Hehe.

-ming tsai
A dry, corporate-like FoodBot. And I LOVE chinese cooking/wok shows.

-alton brown
Oy vey this guy is obnoxious (sorry irate...) I can't tell if I'm watching a food show or Sesame Street.

-barefoot contessa
She bugs me too. She seems too damn happy about everything in general. Smiles when shes grating cheese. And she drives a BMW Convertible. I bet she drops a lot of Xanax.

I can't believe that you have forgotten the best/worst shoe on the food network "semi homemade with sandra lee". This woman is an insane lush who thinks that you can make any canned food "homemade" by adding a dash of vanilla or a sprinkle of parsley and putting it in a cute bowl. Her show always has an ill constructed theme (i once saw her make quesadillas for an indian food theme) and she ALWAYS makes some weird "cocktail" (beer-garitas anyone?).

I love you Alton.

Also: Why are all of the women on FoodTV cooking for their families and all of the men are "chefs"?

First of all, this is a great discussion.

Secondly, I despise Bobby Flay with a passion. The first time I saw an ad for "Iron Chef America" I almost vomited. Am I the only one who thinks he doesn't deserve to be on that show? He's a decent cook but all he ever did was have a couple of crappy shows with ignorant sidekicks like that redneck from chillin and grillin, and Jackie Malouf (who I actually hate more than Flay himself). Maybe what bothers me is the fact that he's so cocky because he cooks food on TV. The fact that they made him an Iron Chef truly makes me sick. It has to be staged, because the only "battle" he could actually win would be if the secret ingredient was BLUE CORN. I'm sorry, southwestern food is good, but it is not a cuisine worthy of being featured on Iron Chef, and Bobby Flay isn't worthy of being a judge on that show. Whew, I feel better.

I rambled there so I'll sum up quickly.

Hate:
Bobby Flay
Barefoot Contessa
Al Roker
Marc Summers
Emeril
That idiot Jack what's her name from "How to Boil Water"
Anyone who hosts dinner parties

Like:
Rachel Ray (completely un-arrogant, consistently creates good easy meals)
Tyler Florence (Greenville, SC native)
Paula Dean (how could you not love her)
Ming Tsai (old school Food Network)
Mario (a little too arrogant but really good)
Alton Brown (I've never once used one of his recipes but I always learn something that makes my cooking better)

Oh, and I can't believe nobody mentioned Giadas' huge melon. She looks like a BOBBLE-HEAD doll. I swear to god every time I watch her show I could swear they use a fish-eye lens in the camera.

And did I mention I hate Bobby Flay?

holy lord you guys are great! my HB hates watching food shows but i LOOOVVVEE the food network!

Alton Brown i will watch over any other show on TV (except if it conflicts with a Real Sex on HBO). i love how he explains everything and why it all works the way it does! he reminds me of Taco the Octopus at www.8legged.com

Rachel Ray is so yummy i could just eat her! (pun intended). that chick is HOT! plus i really like how her personality doesn't change between 30 min meals and $40 a day- i find it cool that she's being herself on the show. she seems like the kinda gal i'd like to have for a best friend. i don't really like her recipies tho... they're too... well, i dunno, they just don't appeal to me.

i like Iron Chef (the original) because i like to see the crazy ingredient of the day. ever see the squid battle? where they're wrestling the squid from the tank? THAT was entertainment! plus they come up with all this crazy stuff! and it's fun to hear the voice overs!

i also love Great Chefs of the World, which used to be on the travel channel but i've not seen it on in a long time- i LOVED the chick who translated and the stuff they made on the show was so varied!

Martha Stewart i think is great, yeah she's contraversial but i think she's totally cool, i wanna be the type of woman who can cook duck a la orange AND make a festive centerpiece AND have a prize winning rose garden AND be organized as hell!

alright, the good having been said, we come to the bad and the ugly:

Emril is wayyy to cliched... i mean, when you've got a cartoon parodying you (Elzar on Futurama) then its time to get a new stich

Paula Dean- is way too southern for me... she reminds me of a counselor at my HS boarding school...

Barefoot Contessa is always having a party, let's have a party, i cant bear to be alone with my fat self another minute, let's eat food together at my house in the hamptons so i don't feel bad about scarfing it by myself... it's like she wants to be Martha but realizes she'll never get there

holy god Bobby Flay- have you ever seen the BBQ show he had where he's had at least two of his GF's on "helping" him cook? he's like "hey! get your bitch ass over there and do dishes! i'm cooking!"
and the episiode of Iron Chef where he lost and got all pissy cause he said it wasn't fair and did a remach and was all like "yeah, take that you little chineese communist biaotch!" SUCH an ass!

the Calorie Commando guy- not only is his theme music totally and completely STUPID he is such a total washed out personality. and you can NEVER EVER make something JUST AS GOOD as the original by subbing in things that are "healthy" poaching will never be as good as frying, and no fat will never be as good as full o fat!

the guy who does "Unwrapped"- way way way too fake!

Nigella Lawson would be a great porn star... This woman LOOOOOVES her food... the hair thing is really annoying (I wouldn't want dinner at her house) but she's always plucking stuff out of the bowls, pots, whatever and popping it into her mouth and eating it with her fingers.... That could be completely hot, if a person was into women.

Ok, I like Emeril as a CHEF, not as a TV personality. He makes good food, but on tv he is obnoxious..and its what sells.. so I guess good for him. Emeril Live blows donkey nuts, Essence of Emeril is much, much better.

Bobby Flay- far too full of himself, fucking arrogant, and stupid. I don't like him at all. I did some work for him Thanksgiving of 2002.. yes I got $200 a day for 3 days, my flight was paid, I had my own hotel room, and there were 3 other people with me and we had a driver take us from our hotel to Mesa Grill every day. Not to mention we were plastered every night. He was cocky, arrogant, and very rude. Ill never work for him again.. ever. I wanted to stab him every time he opened his mouth.

Alton Brown- If only my food science class were this exciting. I love this man. Fantastic. I had my mom order the DVD's just so I can watch them over and over and learn. I hated food science.. but this man is the Beakman of the food world.

Ming Tsai, I dont know that hes even on any more, but I liked his show mmmm mmm Asian food.

Jamie Oliver- I liked Olivers Twist better than I liked The Naked Chef. Both shows were quality though

Giada DeLaurentis- Hot, but I hate how shes always fucking smiling, and so perky. She needs to get some other emotion.

Rachel Ray- Hot but fucking dumb. Good food, fast.. but still no personality and dumb as rocks. In real life shes a bitch, I have friends who met her and shes arrogant.

Calorie Commando dude needs to seek help. That shit cant taste good.

Ina Garten/Barefoot Contessa- good food but she needs to expand her vocabulary. Also I hate how she flaunts her wealth.

Paula Deen is awesome...mmm mmm home cookin. Plus her sons are hot.

Jack from how to boil water, totally dumb.. blonde to the max.

Tyler Florence- hot and good chef yummm yumm

I do love Rachael Ray. She makes some really good food. Her spinach and tomato soup is the so simple and yet so damn good! I do agree that she should either say EVOO or extra virgin olive oil not both.

Bobby Flay is a prick but he does have some good grilling tips occasionally.

Emeril is, as someone else mentioned, a parody of himself. That is a great description.

Alton Brown. How can you not love Alton Brown?

Jamie Oliver was great as the Naked Chef, but his second show was over-produced and, to me, useless.

Oh and Charlie Trotter BAD on TV.. have you EVER had his FOOD

OMG to DIE for. His newest book Raw is AMAZING.. I think hes my 2nd idol next to Julia Child.. Then Emeril...Emeril on TV is VERY different from Emeril in real life. Its a night and day difference just like his 2 shows.

Hrmm Graham Kerr when he was on my local PBS and he had a good run on Discovery Daytime was very awesome. His Galloping Gormet days were hilarious.. he was always drunk. Christ hes funny. His Minimax(his personalized low fat low cal cooking) was actually GOOD!!

I hate Bobby Flay still. Really I do. Bobby Flay is full of POOP.

Al Roker, nobody cares.. hes still a fatty who likes to eat.

I dont like those all american festival shows. Not even interesting.

Marc Summers, how do you not know who he is.. he did Double Dare, Family Double Dare... his 15 min of fame will not end. Even though it should.

Iron Chef America- Come on.... I think Iron Chef is hilarious and its amazing to see them use EVERYTHING, Iron Chef America sucks.

Wolfgang Puck- good guy, kinda hard to understand... yum food Im dying to get to Spaggo.

Jaques Torres- This man can do anything with chocolate, I am jealous. Its always perfect and beautiful.

Ill bitch more later....

Bumped down a few pegs isn't enough.

Bobby Flay needs to be strapped down to a table while various FoodTV chefs beat and torture him. First Morimoto can come in and beat the crap out of him with a cutting board, to teach him a lesson for jumping up on the counters on the real Iron Chef. Then Jackie Malouf, Jack Hourigan, and the redneck from Chillin and Grillin can come in and talk to him at the same time, that's enough to make any man break down. Then you let chairman Kaga come in and shove BLUE CORN down his throat until he starts to choke on his own vomit.

After that you could start cutting off fingers or attaching electrodes to his sensitive areas, I'm not really sure...I didn't really put that much thought into it.

Bobby Flay pretty much made all americans look like arrogant asses after he won an iron chef competition and stood on the cutting board and was cheering. Thats why i dont like him.

Man how do you folks not like Paula Deen? I love that lady. Guess you have to be of Southern roots to appreciate her and the cooking. I love her show the most because all of the food she makes has me drooling like Pavlov's dog every single time. And she looks like a genuinely nice and likable person.

Alton Brown is my food Sensei. If it's something I don't know how to make I go to see if he's got a recipe up on it or a show about it. You learn a ton and you are well entertained while doing so.

The only person on the Network that I really don't like is the Sandra Lee lady which looks more like an arts and craft show than cooking. And Jack Corigan. I hate ditzy blondes with a passion. I'm just waiting for her to turn on the blender and stick her hand in there she's that stupid acting. I say acting because I can't believe anyone is that retarded.

I really enjoy her show...one episode in particular comes to mind. She was making a punch for a Christmas party and poured half a bottle of Southern Comfort into the punch...and then decided that wasn't enough...and poured the whole thing in! YES! That's what I call punch.

I was watching Bobby Flay on Iron Chef the other day, when his dishes were being judged, he was talking back to the panel ("The Buffalo's too tough, yeah right"). I wanted to choke him.
I don't know if it shows in the States, but The Surreal Gourmet, hosted by Bob Blumer has to be my favorite show. This guy makes some of the most creative dishes I've ever seen. Last night he made deep fried apple rings, he served them in a plastic basket, like you'd get an order of onion rings in, he poured some maple syrup in a squeeze bottle and some icing sugar in salt shaker. He had everyone thinking that they were getting onion rings.

I was going to say Bob Blummer as well. A friend gave me his cookbook many years ago... I was pleased to see that he finally got a TV series too.

I guess it could but every time I watch her it's like watching the prototypical Southern Grandma and I can't help but like her. Nobody else on that station seems to get the out and out glee from cooking(and eating) like she does. Most everyone else is so damn self-righteous and uppity that it's just refreshing to see somebody like her on that network.

Favorites:

Alton Brown: My personal kitchen gadget god. This guy has gotten me to buy more kitchen stuff.... the great thing is that I use it all and it made my cooking even better.

Emeril: OK, I am from Fall River, MA so I have to give him props. I think he is vibrant and fun. I have tried some of his dishes and they are great. However I have to agree with the catch phrases and the wild screaming and applauding for alcohol and garlic. It's garlic, come on.

Paula Dean: She doesn't care that the dish she just made has enough calories for an elephant for the rest of the week and for that I love her.

Rachael Ray: This is a love/hate thing. I think she is cute and would love to have her in bed, unless she did that whole eye roll thing which she does after any bite of food, I just want to smack her. Her food is good though so she makes the list, well that and cause she's hot.

Giadia Delaurentis: Small, perky, hot. Does the same eye roll thing as Rachael, STOP IT! Good food though.

Iron Chef: I love this show. "Fukisan.... take it Ota" How can you not want to watch them make ice cream out of god only knows what. Oh and if reincarnation exists and I come back and a sea urchin, I am staying the fuck away from Japan.

Jacques Torres: Chocolate god. He's totally full of himself, but when you see what he can create with chocolate he's allowed to be.

Wolfgang Puck: Great food, but What did you say?

Ming Tsai - Also has a restaurant in Mass, so props to you, but where did he go?

Jaimie Oliver - Haven't seen him in a while. Always enjoyed his show.

Hates:

Bobby Flay: Dude, you aren't that great, so shut the fuck up. Everything is southwestern and you grill everything. This dog needs a new trick and a new attitude. Food Network loves this guy, I have no idea why. Iron Chef my ass, who did this guy blow at FN? He should commentate and Alton should be the chef.

Mario Batalli: Get this full of himself asshole off of my TV, and take off those obnoxious shoes!

Jack Horgan (How to Boil Water): This bitch is hot, and I would love to have her in bed, but how fucking dumb do you think we are? Cut the shit OK?

Calorie Commando: Dude just shut up, you'll be cancelled in a year. I don't give a fuck what you put in that cheesecake, it doesn't take like cheesecake.

Low Carb and Loving it: Just shoot that guy and his dry wife too.

Barefoot contessa: Ever wonder why her husband leaves on Sunday and comes home on Friday night? Cause he's banging the fuck out of Giada Delaurentis. When people come over stop that obnoxious laugh after every sentance, that really pisses me off.

Sandra Lee: She must be a fantastic fuck. If I had to live with this chick I'd eat a bullet. Wow! You can frost cake with store bought frosting! I'll bet no one's ever done that before, you're fan-fucking-tastic, here's your own show.

Tyler Florence: You arrogant prick, who the fuck do you think you are? Why are you such an ass to people who don't know how to cook? You are a professional, they aren't stop being a prick.

Bobby Rivers (Top 5): Someone please kill this guy.

Al Roker: He and Bobby Rivers should be gay together. Yes Al you can be the man. Between the two of them are some of the most annoying personalities on TV today.

Anyone watch the Thirsty Traveller? I like this show as well. Travel the world and sample the best of alcohol and food that country/region has to offer...

It's a little bit travel, a little bit booze, a little bit cooking...

The host seems like a good guy too... Someone you'd like to hang out with...
