I couldn't find the old thread, so here's a new one.

The second season of the BBC's rejuvenated Doctor Who is now airing in North America, and I'm curious how many of you are sticking with it.

I'm already a big fan, and as much as I liked Chris Ecclestone, in the first season, I'm really excited about what I've seen so far with David Tennant.

I wasn't sure if I'd like the new Doctor or not...but I'm really enjoying the new season. I'm looking forward to seeing more. As for Tennant, well, he's cute and that certainly helps (I'm such a girl).

Also, I noticed on IMDb the other day that they seem to be planning a spinoff for Sarah Jane. That should be interesting!

Having seen the second season already, I have this to say (no spoilers)...

I definitely like David Tennant better as The Doctor. However, the second season isn't quite as consistent as the first. That shouldn't stop you from watching by any means, just a heads-up. That, and episode 10 didn't actually happen.

All that said, there are also some GREAT episodes in season 2. The finale, which I'm sure most of you know what happens in by now, is quite excellent. I'm looking forward to season 3 very much, but until then there's Torchwood, which starts October 22!

I'm really enjoying it a great deal. While it's overshadowed by Battlestar Galactica, it's easily the second best program on the SciFi channel, and I watch it with great interest. I wasn't sure about Tennant at first, being such a fan of Eccleston and all, but I've been pleasantly surprised. He's proned to fantastic flights of overacting, and is able to capture the larger then life character quite well.

I'm sorry, I just have to say it. I know it's nitpicking, but I can't help it after seeing his name in giant letters at the beginning of every episode....

Having seen all of series two, I have to be fully honest and admit that I did like series one better overall. I think that has a lot to do with, as Secret pointed out, a certain lack of consistency. The episodes seemed to fit better together overall, and it felt like a full circle arc from the beginning to the end. And I am probably one of the very few who preferred the slightly darker Doctor that Eccleston portrayed.

That being said...David Tennant is excellent! He is certainly more of a "traditional" Doctor, and he brings such great energy and originality to the role. The effects in series two are a bit of a step up from series one, I was especially impressed by "The Beast" towards the middle of the series.

While there were aspects of series two that disappointed *cough*episode 10*cough* (seriously, skip it :lol:), I will <b>definitely</b> be tuning in for series three! And anxiously awaiting Captain Jack in Torchwood. :)

I just want to know one thing...will the big floating head guy (sorry, can't remember his name) be in any other episodes this season?

I'm pretty positive he only appears once in season 2, although it's been awhile since I watched it.

Tennant is excellent. Just another taste in an already overwhelming blend.

The "beast" two parter is good and the two parter season finale will break your heart a little. It's good stuff and if Torchwood is half the series we're in for some good times.

Just re-watched the final episode on BBC.

I'll consider myself warned about Ep. 10. At least my expectations are now sufficiently low enough that I might just be pleasantly surprised. Heck I didn't even mind Colin Baker (Doctor #6) so much, so I must have a high threshold for torture. :D

I can't wait for K-9 and Sarah Jane next week. :thumbsup:

Was looking forward to this. Must be me cant be bothered with it anymore. Used to love the old versions when i was a kid.

I am most definitely a fan of Eccelston over Tennent.
For all of my gripes that I shall spare everyone, I continue to watch the show and hope for better things.
I anticipate Torchwood and can only hope RTD hasn't fiddled with it too much.

I did enjoy Torchwood. Nothing spectacular but decent enough.

That's interesting, because I find Tennant to be much more "Doctor-y" than Eccleston. Not that I didn't think Eccleston was great, I just think Tennant has that...something.

Ok - I don't dig the show that much, but I was wondering if someone could explain why there is a different Doc? I missed that one.

Remember that Doctor Who has been running on and off since the 1960's. Actors age and move on, and David Tennant is the 10th actor to play the Doctor - not counting the 60's Movie doctor. In the mythology of the show, these transitions between actors are called "Regeneration". Basically, every time the Doctor is fatally injured, he takes regenerates a new body and personality, but retains his memories and feelings. Various Doctors have been shot, fallen off of Radio towers and so on. In Chris Eccelston's case, he absorbed the "Time Vortex" to save Rose, and this act did him in. He regenerated at the end of the 2005 Season.

Trivia note: The current canon is that the Doctor can only regenerate 12 times. However, there have been hints that this number is surmountable.

If you can get your hands on Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death, watch it. Rowan Atkinson is brilliant.

Nicely played. A pretty cool concept in all that I had no idea about. I can't say this will get me into the show, but it will help for sure. It's proximity to BSG is its main attraction. This info just might help me make it over the hump though.

True, Eccleston was a much more sombre and stern Doctor but I accepted that as a modernization.
Yes, Tennent returns to the more carefree style, yet, certain elements within his protrayal are a grand affront to me and a severe dishonor to the memory of the previous Doctors....but that's just my opinion. Again, I'll keep watching it and Torchwood. I remain ever hopeful.

"The Girl in the Fireplace" just aired here, and I have to say that it's been my favourite episode so far. The set up with the derelict ship, and the time windows and 18th century France was great fun, and the writing did a superb job of balancing the action with the Doctor's emotional state.

School Reunion, touched on these romantic elements as well wth Sarah Jane, but clumsily crammed them around a dull threat.

This episode was much tighter and I'm beginning to see what was said about this season being "inconsistant."

Regarding Romance and the Doctor, I also see a lot of Russel T. Davies' earlier series Bob and Rose(there's that name again) in it.

As an aside, If you enjoyed this episode as much as I did, I have to recommend The Time Traveller's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger. It's a time travel romance with a similar premise. Er... without any clockwork monsters.

Torchwood is an anogram or Doctor Who. Any idea when we'll get Torchwood in across the pond? We gave you Battlestar, it's the least you can do BBC Wales!!!

lol, we didn't "give" them Battlestar Galactica - SkyONE is/was involved in the making of it.

As for Torchwood, I'm not sure if we'll be getting it. For one thing, it's a bit more niche, since it's a spinoff of a show that isn't even all that popular in the US in the first place. On top of that, it can be pretty gory and the language is beyond that which is even typically seen on standard cable ("fuck" is not something that is unheard on the programme). Finally, there is speculation that it may be a "one-off" - a show which only has one season. So, who knows.

SkyONE payed through the nose to get it played in the UK and Ireland first, but I don't think they were involved in the creation or making of Battlestar. It was all SciFi (with NBC).

Maybe I'll just bit torrent Torchwood. I'd rather buy it, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Does Amazon.co.uk accept US dollars? If so, maybe I'll just buy the DVD (it's slated to come out in December, £14.89 + shipping, which is about $30US).

As I understand it, SkyONE was involved in funding the first season. Anyway, that's not important :)

Not sure about whether amazon.co.uk will take US dollars. I think the bigger question is, will they ship to the US? Money can always be converted.

Dave is a huge Dr Who fan, as is his father. He never misses and episode. Im not much into sci fi so I would just buys myself on the computer while he watches (I paid attention enough to know I didnt really care for Christopher Eccleston. I remember there was one episode that involved Queen Victoria that I actually watched and enjoyed,leave it to ME to start being interested in the episode that takes place in Scotland hehehe) so I started paying a little more attention.

well something has happened, I dont know if its because Im a David Tennant fan, or I wanted to be able to contribute to dinner conversations when we visited his parents or what but when season 3 started, I shut down the pc and watched (all the ones so far)

I went to Dave's parents for dinner last nite and ended up leaving with the DVD's of the very first the episodes and the dvd collection of the Tom Baker years and season one and season two of the current ones (and random episodes of the Jon Pertwee ones). NOW Im glad his dad has been watching for however long he has. Poor man spent dinner last nite explaining things I didnt understand.

It's a VERY entertaining show. I always find myself laughing and feeling satisfied by it.

Great Shani! I hope you stay hooked because you've got around 30 years of episodes to get though. Granted, a lot of the 80's episodes are for completionists only, but I'm sure you'll find plenty to enjoy.

The first Doctor, played by William Hartnell, was a bit cumudgeonly for my taste but those first episodes are still a lot of fun. The loopy streak you see channeling through David Tennant came in with Doctor #2, Patrick Troughton, and was solidified by the time Tom Baker came around. Let us know which classic episodes you really get into!

As for the current Season 3, I'm digging it a lot, despite some uneven episodes. Blink just aired here and it has been my favourite by far. Cracking good writing!

mmm . I dont really like the last season and this season.

I'm spoiled though... When I first encountered The Doctor, it was the incomparables - John Pertwee and into Tom Baker playing the roles.

I have jelly babies on my desk right now, and wore an excessively long multicolored stripey scarf for years because of Tom Baker. *grin*

The "Saxon" story arc in series three is brilliant, and the final three episodes that end the series are stunning.

One of the better shows to jump the pond, I'd say. I enjoyed Torchwood very much, and I'm looking forward to series 2 which is being shot right now. It'll be on BBC2 come early 2008, I believe.

Blink, by far, is the best episode of the season in my opinion. I mean, I like the old favorites, but that episode just blew me away when I watched it.

By the by, the guy who wrote that one also wrote one of my favorites from the previous season about Madame De Pompadour. He has also written a seperate project concerning Jekyll and Hyde that I'm smack dab in the middle of at the moment, but enjoying immensely.

I can't say the gap year is going to be too fun, but at least Tennant is hanging around for a bit longer.

I just watched Utopia and I'm freaking losing my mind. This show really has an excellent history and great writing. I started shaking towards the end.

I just saw Blink, and just, wow!

That was some pretty scary shit to think about.

I wonder how long the concept of "someoine/thing can't move if being observed" has been around?

I know it's been in a few games (Luigi's Mansion, a couple of the Zelda ones, etc.) but has it been in literature, too?
