how to put a halt on menstrual cycle?
Here is my situation: I'm in university and my exam schedule is a b*tch! I have 4 exams in 3 days and I can't defer any of it and wats worse, i'm getting my period very soon, and i get them pretty bad :/
I want to see if i can at least postpone my period so i don't get affected by my period. To my understandng, contraceptives or some pill helps you put a halt on ur period for a bit until you get off the pill, am i right? Can i get the pill at my family doctor? Or do i need to go to a specialist for a prescription? I've never taken contraceptives pills or the like before.. so i want to ask those who knows or has the experience of ....and give me some advice! Thanks alot!!!!

If you've never taken contraceptives before, most doctors won't start you on them until after your next period- too late for you!
If I were you, I'd just go and discreetly talk to your professors one by one if you're that worried about your period affecting your exam schedule. Just let them know what's up, and voice your concern that your period might affect your performance on your exams. I don't think that's playing the "girl" card, I just think it's the truth! You should also go by your student health services and ask if they know of anything that could help with your period. Also, go buy a bottle of B-6 vitamins. Those help a lot... least for me!

I used to get them pretty bad as well-endometriosis is a bitch-but there are ways to overcome the worst of it. There are OTC's for them that will relieve pain and have mild diuretics to calm the pain and bloating. Eat healthy and light-I found staying off beef during my periods was a great relief for me. Sleep as much as possible, preferrably in one shot, but nap when you can for an hour. Meditate-anyone can do it-it's just a matter of taking 15 minutes, sitting back, tuning out and controlled breathing (you can try 'seeing' each breath as a color) If you also work, call in a 'me day' during your worst days, rest, study a bit, enjoy a good salad and pamper yourself. If there's a day of school that you know is just going to be easy, review or something, you can skip that if possible for your 'me day'. Contraceptives control the frequency and some of the bleeding, but, if like me, you get pain, headaches, etc., they might ease it all up, but won't eradicate it and your first month on them makes for some interesting changes.

Study like crazy! If you get stressed out enough, your period won't even come. At least, that's how it works for me. Stress totally postpones my periods.
Otherwise, I wouldn't tell your professors- that's just...weird. Unless, of course, you're on a personal level with your profs. Just take some Midol, soak in a hot bath at least once a day for cramps, and get someone to give you back rubs! And make sure you have tons of supplies with ya! Everyone knows what a drag it is to be taking a test and realise you forgot to restock the tampons in your backpack/purse. Last edited by la petite moi; 04-13-2006 at 10:13 AM.. |

Contraceptives won't help you. Even if you had started them immediately after your last period it's likely you'd still have spotting and some cramping at your normal period time. It takes time for your body to adjust to the pill.
The situation that you fear - I had it happen. The first semester of my senior year we were taking finals. I made it till 2 day left before it hit but I was miserable. I got about halfway through my Teaching U.S. History Exam and couldn't manage any further. I was getting dizzy and felt terribly miserable. I went to my professor halfway through my exam and asked if I could be dismissed as I was not feeling well. He took one look at my white face and told me to come to his office tomarrow if I was feeling better to finish the exam. I got back to my desk and when I leaned over to get my bag I passed out. Ended up in the school nurses office and in bed for the rest of the day. It was terribly embarrassing. I was able to go back to my professors office the next day to take the test. He told me to go back and change any answers that I felt I needed to since he believed I might not have done as well as I could have considering how poorly I had felt. It was a male teacher and he KNEW what had been my problem but he barely alluded to it. It was handled professionally and politely. Unless you are prone to fainting my advice would be. Stock up on the aleve, tampons and whatever else you need. Get one of those heat patches that are designed to help menstral cramps. They are discreet and really do help quite a lot. Keep your fingers crossed and do your best. If you get to an exam and feel terribly THEN go to your teacher and ask for an extension because you are not feeling well. OR as in my college's policy- you had to have a school nurses or a Dr's excuse, in that case - you might need to call them before it's time for the exams. I wouldn't recommend going to the teachers beforehand but it's not an idea without merit. Do the contraceptives if YOU want to. Don't worry about what anyone else says. Sheesh if you're in college still (and not graduating this spring) and you have a boyfriend - you better not be having sex or you better be on the pill. Too many college careers have been run off the tracks by pregnancy. It's your future you need to watch out for. If your boyfriend does not want you on the pill then he better be prepared to go without sex or maybe get left in the dust. I wish you the best of luck.

At most health food stores you can buy progesterone cream in a tube. a little of that on your tummy for a few mornings and voila you won't have a period. Usually used for women who are dealing with the changes of menopause but this sounds like an emergency, and it works.

very much off the topic here...sorry

maybe that from your side stems from your indirect experience...but you shouldnt go around thinking that way. sure, control from either side of a relationship is bad, but not all men who voice their dislikes to you are controlling. just some friendly advice now, back to the subject, i used to get very painfull period pain.it would put me out sometimes for two days.it was the worst. then one day i decided to go to the doctor.and he prescribed a very light contraceptive. he said it would take away the pain and i wouldnt have my period for as long as i used to. befor the pill, used to get it for 7-8 days.now that im on the pill it lasts 3-4 days. and, i dont experience as much pain as i used to. mostly now its just that uncomfortable feeling. for me, it helped the first time round. the next month when i got my period i was over the moon. it worked like a bomb. and also, if your bf does not like the idea of contraception, just let him know the pro's about it.tell him that it would benefit you in a way that it wouldnt affect you as much when it does come to your studies. its very helpfull.

I didn't intend to completely stop my period really. I just wanted it done in time for the weekend when we'd have a chance to swing. Sometimes I can go for up to 7 days and I wanted to be done in 3 days. I started using the cream as soon as I started my period and found that it ended in about 3 days of using the cream. I don't know about using on your belly but the directions on the jar suggested that I put it on my palms and the soles of my feet. It was a rich cream that was good for my skin as well so I figured it would at least be that if it didn't help end my period early. Also I was afraid it might end up with a rebound effect once I stopped using it. I only used it till the weekend was over and then stopped. I had no spotting or 'second' period. My verdict - this might at least be helpful to postpone or shorten the length of a period. I have not tested to see if it would delete one from my schedule altogether.

Let's say mine should start in 2 days or so and I want it completely gone by Thursday.
Should I start doing that now or wait until it starts? Sounds like we may have a winner of an idea!!! And is it available over the counter? (edit: just re-read the post and saw available at health food stores. Is that where you got the cream or did you MILs cream come via prescription?) |

I have found the cream at the Walmart pharmacy. It seems quite common as a menopause symptom relief product.

Period started Friday, finally, after what seemed to be at least a three day delay thanks to the cream.
Perhaps only use it as raeanna did, to shorten the length of time. I may try it again mid-period sometime to see if I get the same results...interesting |
