Ruger 10/22 Jamming
Hey guys,
My brand new (3 weeks) .22LR(semi-auto) is giving me some problems. I went to the range a few times with no problems...As soon as I got home I cleaned it with the kit the salesman gave me, followed all instructions. Fast forward 3 weeks...Today The gun consistantly jammed everytime I reloaded the magazine...The shell isn't ejecting all the way, gettin stuck in the action. I bought a brand new Ruger magazine....same problem...What gives? |

what ammo are ya using? The 10/22 is a gas operated gun, it sounds like the ammo your using is a little light for a semi auto. My 10/22 isn't terribly fond of Remington thunderbolts at all. It does like high velocity hollow-points like winchester super x, and similar products. I would try that.

Have to agree with the consensus, but we should ask you first if you used the same ammo when it WAS working right? It's always possible you've done something to retard/block the bolt's rearward movement to the point that the shell isn't being ejected properly. Just covering all bases. I'd think that something like that would point itself out in other less pleasant ways, but it wouldn't hurt to disassemble the receiver and make sure everything's correct.

The ammo i was using while jamming was federal something(non-hollow) and American eagle (hollow), i also had a few jams with remington "game loads". The Fed and AE were 2x the price. The stuff i used the first time didn't jam once...but I don't remember what it was called.

I just talked to a gun dealer about this problem- seems some ammo types dont feed worth a shit in the 10/22- it was just an in passing discussion when we were stuck beside each other at a gun show, each tending our tables, so I dont remember what brand he recomended, said that both he and a friend had had the problem that you describe, and that if you found an ammo brand that would work, then it worked like a champ and was one of his favorites....

The 14 has always had that reputation, unlike the 10/22.

The 10/22 actually does feed just about everything short of CB caps and some subsonic ammo, but many of them are notorious for the extractor slipping off of the shell before it's extracted. Many of the stock 10/22 parts are made to... nonexacting tolerances, to say the least. I reccommend checking out www.rimfirecentral.com to learn a bit about your 10/22, and you can also find some good online shops for aftermarket parts there, HawkTech Arms, for example.
Since you're having problems with extraction, I would reccomend getting a Volquartsen exact edge extractor, which should eliminate most feeding problems. Also reccomended would be a Volquartsen target hammer, which will cut the horrible trigger pull nearly in half. If you decide to get the hammer kit, install only the hammer and not the springs that come with it to avoid light primer strikes. Also check out Winchester Dynapoint ammo, which is available in bulk (500 rd boxes) for about $10 at most Wal-Marts or $13 at K-marts. I've had incredible results with this ammo... it's insanely consistent, especially for being bulk, cheap ammo. |

I had that exact same problem with mine. Got it for Christmas, so I wasn't enthusiastic about sending it in. i'm pretty comfortable disassembling/cleaning guns, so I took the receiver apart and found that the spring which goes into the back of the trigger wasn't installed correctly. Instead of going into it, it was caught on the outer rim and was all cock-eyed.
Anyways, that fixed the problem, probly been a few thousand rounds thru it since then. |
