cd drive not working.
have this laptop that i bought from www.ibuypower.com and its not a brand computer.. its one that they built on thier own. but anyways. i bought it and it has worked great for about 5 months no problems. and now today my cd rom/dvd/cd burner is not responding to opening up. i tought the eject button and it doesnt do anything. i used a needle to use that "emergency" release and it works. i go to the drive on the my computer icon and right click on it and it ejects but i go into device manager and it seems to be working properly and it has exclamtiion point or anything saying that its not working properly. so all looks good..
and i restarted the machine too. i did anti virus scans, (dont know how that owuld make it not work.) but did it anyways. and when i put a cd in the tray. nothing happens!! it doesnt auto run like it use to. and i click on the cd icon and it shows as if there isnt anything in the cd file when there is a full cd in the tray. the last time i used it was last night when i made a copy of a cd!! eeerrr!!!!!! come on my fellow TFP'ERS!! help a oh so helpless one out!!! thanks.. Reinstall CD drivers?
Reinstall OS? Did you try to eject in the middle of it doing something heavy? (E.g burning stuff) In short, something's changed. Try to find it, I'll wager there's a setting somewhere within the drive configuration that's causing it. If all else fails back everything up and either restore the system to an earlier point or reinstall the OS.

First of all, don't use capitals for your post. That denotes screaming, and is considered rude by some.
As for the CD drive, take of the bottom cover of the laptop. There should be 8 to 10 screws that hold it in place. What you are looking for is the FCC label on the CD drive itself inside the laptopn case. It is usually on the bottom of the actual unit in laptop CD drives. Once you are looking at the label, look for the manufacturer and model number. If there is none, use the FCC id of the unit to look it up on the FCC page. The search by id function on the FCC page is buried somewhere in their site, so I hope another TFP member can point you to a direct link. Once you have the model # and manufacturer, call or email their sales office and ask for a price qoute for a replacement, or ask if this is a known issue to their tech Dept. It sounds to me like the eject mechanics have become faulty, which is sadly common in laptops over 24 months of age, but not common in newer laptops. For that matter though, at only 5 months, should your warrenty cover this?

Fcc ID Search is located here. It is quite handy for finding all kinds of oddball equipment info, especially old modems and network cards that arn't of an obvious brant to locate drivers for.

Wiggle the cable from the CD to the main board to 'clean' it.
If not better - remove it and reseat it. Do this carefully if there is no plug, just a cable with carbon connectors. Only do this once. You may have to lift a piece of plastic first. You are desperate at this point so go ahead and try it. |

To me, when it doesn't work it's broke
So change it? CD drives aren't meant to last a lifetime, that's why warranty is only a year :P But since it's only 5 months plus ... it'll be kinda sad if it's broke. But then again, it's not branded? CD writers are more prone to wear and tear Sorry to say.
