Ask a Staples Employee
I am really bored tonight, so I decided to start a thread where people can ask questions about anything they need help with. I work in the "Machines" department, so I specialize in computers and printers, and other machines of that nature, and accessories as well. So ask away and I'll do my best to help answer your questions.

I once asked a Staples employee in the computer department, "Which different thermal pastes do you carry?", and the response was "Thermal paste? What's that?"
It's too bad most smaller towns have to rely on Staples to get their computer products (other than ordering online), because the prices are so high and the customer service sucks; but I guess I shouldn't single out Staples, as Office Depot and Future Shop are the same. |

You realize, that you're violating all sorts of Staple's employee agreements if you release any information that's not publicly available. Like published prices, you can do that. What Staple's actually pays, not good. While you're at it, if you even come accross as officially representing a company line, they can fire/sue you into a cave. You're not a company rep, off the clock for sure, and are likey prohibited from acting in any such capacity either way.
I just thought I'd put that out there. Some people talk about work on the internet, and lose their jobs. Granted, it's much more likely to get some in trouble than others, but hey, I just wanted to remind you. I guess, because if I ever decided to "leak" comany information, and it randomly somehow got noticed, I'd be out in two point one seconds. And that price on RAM is a freaking rip, but that's what you'd get for shopping at Staple's for RAM....

He's just trying to be helpful by giving out some general information, it's not like he's stealing company secrets and selling them for profit. And... it's Staples, what's the big deal? Of course you're not going to get the best prices at Staples, everything there is a ripoff. But he's just offering help with some simple technical stuff if anyone has questions

Circuit City as well. That's pretty much all we have around here. They're decent for some things, but my video card, that's only 163, with free shipping on newegg, is 205 at Circuit City, not counting taxes. It's silly. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/ATI-R...oductDetail.do ( It's $205 in my local store ) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-331&depa=0 |

Tylor - I think it is a good idea that you started this thread. People who go to Staples to get all their computer gear need to be ripped off anyway. Don't give me the small town mumbo either fellows - the internet is your friend in buying computer parts. It is not like Tylor said - flame me since I work at Staples so I can defend them. He said - ask me anything about my job or whatever you think I can share.
That being said, I was wondering about the best deals on paper. Good paper makes all the difference when printing, but some of the stuff is a total rip. Any secrets on what paper you would buy for high quality printing yourself? Since you work in machines, I will ask another one that is closer to home: regardless of price and whether or not I would buy it at Staples or anywhere else, what is the best printer for the money being spent? For example A $2000 laser printer can still be a great value when what you are getting is maybe better than comparable $4000 lasers. Same with a $400 injet ect. Finally, do you have any experience or knowledge of Samsung Laser Printers? What do you think? Thanks again for starting the thread and your advice.

heh I worked at Staples for a few days....I got put in the computer section by coincidence (I am a computer geek btw) and on one of my first customers with the manager guy nearbye, asked me for a price. I go look it up and my first reaction was "Whoah!" I wasn't employed much longer after that incident....

Do you sell the red stapler featured in the movie "Office Space"? Do you believe you come across as more knowledgable being a staples employee rather than a regular joe?
I ask because I'm curious if any place sells that stapler and because people think they are so smart when they work someplace that you'd think smart people would have to work. |

I know you can buy that stapler at Hot Topic, there's one of those stores in all the malls around here. If you're so smart, why aren't you helping people with questions they have? He's just trying to be helpful, which is better than bitching about someone trying to do something decent.

is there any special way to tell is something is on clearance? i know for officedepot xx.04 means its in the begining stage of clearance. xx.01 means its the lowest prices its ever gonna be and its nearly gone and probably only display model.
also, will you hook us up with some black friday ads when they come around? haha o and, i read a thread a long time ago not on this board but another about dumpster diving and how people would find whole hard-drives, cd-rom drives, and other stuff in the dumpsters of stores like staples, cc, and officedepot. i never really believed it. does your staples throw out completely good stuff in the dumpster? Okay, wow. First of all Billege - I appreciate your concern, but I am doing nothing to violate Staples policies, thanks.
Second, Mondak - Thanks for defending me and I do know that paper makes all the difference is printing quality. For instance, if you have an InkJet printer and you use Laser Printer paper the ink will smear, and if you use inkjet on laser the quality is awful, so you want to make sure you get the printer specific paper, brands don't really make much of a difference, but i have had problems with HP Laser paper, the toner doesn't seem to fuse to one side, which makes for an inconvience. Personally I like the PaperMill paper the most. As for your other question, an inkjet that i really like is the HP 6540, which is sold at $149.99. A photo printer that we just got in, it's a beast for size, is the HP Photosmart 8540, which is expensive, not sure if it's worth it, sold at $299.99. One that i do like and isn't ridiculous is the 7760 for 149.99. As for color laser I personally like the Okidata 5100n for $349.98. Last Xepidemic I do not know of any way to find clearance deals other than actually going to the store, it doesn't mean there is no other way, i just don't know of it. Sorry. |

sweet - thanks Tylor. I always figured Laser Paper = better. Makes sense that it would smear since they use heat to melt the ink into the paper in most cases. Now to figure out a foolproof way to find the "right" side of the paper to print on.
I will look into that Photosmart 8450. Sounds like it could be nice. $349.59 for a color laser? It prints good? Wow.

Tylor, perhaps you should try a different brand of laser paper. It's been a trick in the graphics world for well over a decade now to use laser paper in an inkjet for the highest quality printing. Laser paper is smooth because there are fewer and smaller pores in it.
The more pores you have in paper, the more the ink will run into them, which makes it lose clarity. Generally, unless it's cheap crappy laser paper, you'll get a much sharper print. I use weyerheuser myself, and it always works just fine. I should add that you CAN get even higher quality prints off of photo paper rather than laser paper. . .but with photo paper at around $1 per sheet, I'm stickin' with laser paper |

Huh, Shakran, that's interesting because i've had nothing but trouble with laser paper in inkjet printers. Well then again it might depend on the printer itself, like the way it loads the paper through it, like whether it goes over rollers after the ink is on it or not, because i found that when it goes over the rollers the ink stays on the roller rather than the paper :/. I will try some new paper as well as new printers to see if i can get this "trick" to work for me. Thanks!

if the paper's hitting a roller after the ink's deposited, then your inkjet was designed by a whack job. The rollers should be underneath the paper. Nothing should touch the printed surface of the paper after it's been printed on until your fingers do when you snatch it from the tray.
What inkjet do you use? I've never had an inkjet that uses this design. Check out the Lexmark Z53 - it's been a good realiable printer for me, and I gotta admit I love the speed. 12ppm in b&w kicks ASS. |
