if the paper's hitting a roller after the ink's deposited, then your inkjet was designed by a whack job. The rollers should be underneath the paper. Nothing should touch the printed surface of the paper after it's been printed on until your fingers do when you snatch it from the tray.
What inkjet do you use? I've never had an inkjet that uses this design. Check out the Lexmark Z53 - it's been a good realiable printer for me, and I gotta admit I love the speed. 12ppm in b&w kicks ASS.
