can someone tell me how good they work and does it matter if u spend 30$ or 100$. Beacuse in most things you get what you pay for. But something they just change more beacuse of the name brand. And i see tv tunners for like 30$ and some for 100+ dollers.

I've got an AverTV Stereo that works fine. The software leaves much to be desired, but it works fine as something to watch TV with.
I've heard good things about the ATI All-In-Wonder cards. As for the descramblers, I think it depends on your cable system. I've seen descramblers intended to work on European cable systems, but not in the US. My particular cable company puts blocks inline with the coax in their locked box on the back of my house, so there really isn't anything passing through to descrable. |

you do imo get what you pay for i have the ati tv wonder ve which retails for around $40 USD at bestbuy and other retailers. the software leaves a bit to be desired, the tuner does not work as advertised on my winxp pro box dunno whats up with that but when i try to close the tv viewing window it just hangs on screen and i have to reboot, ive used different versions of tuner software with the card and same results. had a friend of mine say he had lots of probs with the same card on an xp system too. more power to ya if it works fine for you, i have not however heard of any issues from the bit more pricey all in wonders which are a tuner and video card all in one.

I suppose it depends on what you use it for. I have a wintv radio that I use in my Mythtv (www.mythtv.org) box as a PVR, and going to the TV screen, there isnt much difference between it and the normal cable--and this is on a 42" HDTV. On a computer monitor, I can absolutely see the quality loss, but because a TV is such a lower resolution, there is next to no quality loss, and most of that is due to my processor not being able to encode at anything higher.

I'd really like to get a card with an MPEG encoder, but it will cost me a few more $$$. How do you like your MythTV setup? What are you using for a remote? |

I like it a lot. It does require patience (dont expect to get it up and running in an afternoon--it took me nearly two weeks of tinkering) and some basic linux knowledge, but the program itself is very polished. I was expecting it to be like many linux programs are--a sort of interminable beta, never feeling finished. I was pleasantly surprised with MythTV, it is very well done.
I still dont have my remote working. We just got the box running a few days ago, and I havent gotten a chance to play with the remote yet. I would suggest installing via KnoppMyth (www.mysettopbox.tv). It is a Knoppix based install that takes a lot of the annoyances out of compiling, etc. It is also ready for Hauppauge based remotes, so no kernel recompile. I would suggest a PVR-250 or 350 for a hardware based encoder. They both come with remotes too, and I believe KnoppMyth is already set up for the exact remote that it comes with.

It would work fine, but dont plan on gaming much with it, and its support under linux is spotty at best.
