win98/dos file transfer
I run a computer with dos on it because that is all my cnc machine will take. And i use a win98 computer to Make the files that run the cnc machine. I then put the stuff on a disk and transfer it that way. Ive been doing it for years and im just tired of all these disks. I wanna find a way 2 just transfer it over a cable. Any suggestions are happy. I was thinking of hooking up a zip drive with a parallel port switch and turning on in win98 comp. then switching it over to the dos comp and turning it on so both comps think they are hooked up and then keep switching them. maybe getitng one of those switches that automaticaly switch it for you...kind of a bad way but if it works and is only way i may try it. Let me know what u guys think

Networking, Serial Cable, Parallel Cable....
Networking on DOS is a bit of a pain, but it can be done.. I suggest doing that if possible. Not sure what cnc machine is (besides running DOS), but can you run Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on it? That'll make networking a bit easier. |

I'm a linux whore so of course I have to suggest putting it on there, and network them with it, but that's beside the point. Not too much else I can think of that's practical without having that medium there, such as the zip drive, as you suggested. Another along those lines would be a file server with perhaps an ftp daemon running.
Besides that, I'm not too sure...

Buy a laplink cable and laplink that has a dos version, the parallel version is faster but not all pcs have suitable parallel ports,, most do though, it depends on how your CNC is connected, if it uses the parallel port you're with serial unless you also get a parallel switch box.
its about $50 shop around for cheaper versions, cable is about $14, a lot of places sell laplink parallel/serial cables http://www.laplink.com/products/llv/overview.asp Guaranteed simplest version is going to be serial, but the parallel is only going to be slightly less easier, if at all, but worth it for the faster speed, really depends on the age of your CNC PC again. You may even be able to find free software that does what laplink does. this one seems cheaper comes with 3 cables, but i know nothing about it, and the other PC must have 32 bit windows, so basically anything except dos or windows 3.x ( the machine you will be transferring from, not the CNC machine ) http://www.sewelld.com/PCtoPCFileTransfer.asp Make your own parallel cable if you feel the need http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...98121609495725 (also norton ghost can do pc-pc transfer, but its a PITA) |

You'll need to get yourself Microsoft's old DOS networking and protocol stack. It's tedious to get your DOS LAN drivers working but you'll find them in the NDIS folder for your LAN card.
Try here: http://www.i386.com/default.asp?c=6&k=12 Also try www.bootdisk.com and search around for a network boot disk for DOS. You can then use NET SHARE and NET USE commands to accomplish what you're looking for. Getting the LAN drivers setup is the worst of it. Try a boot disk and see what goes.

buy a network card that has dos drivers, it'll probably need qemm or something similar because it'll eat lots of memory. then setup a tcp stack or a mini windows network stack
try this http://members.iinet.net.au/~bdriver/bootdisk/ you'll probably need to cut down the size of the disk if you dont have a hard drive or extra floppy on it, plus you can always copy over the floppy to the hard drive and modify it ther.e |
