I'm a linux whore so of course I have to suggest putting it on there, and network them with it, but that's beside the point. Not too much else I can think of that's practical without having that medium there, such as the zip drive, as you suggested. Another along those lines would be a file server with perhaps an ftp daemon running.
Besides that, I'm not too sure...
