I run redhat 9, and I used to have KDE installed, but last time I reinstalled linux, it defaulted to gnome. I think I like KDE better, but honestly don't know enough to even know why.
I think kde has more themes available, more apps that work well with it.

I don't use either, I use ICE-Experimental. Besides the lack of a desktop, it loads really fast, basically finish hitting enter, and I'm pretty much ready to go, and the con is no desktop but that doesn't bother me.
When I used KDE or Gnome, I prefered KDE as it didn't freeze on me as much as Gnome did. |

I prefer KDE. Can't give any specific reasons really though. It just FEELS better to me and more responsive.
the philosophies behind Gnome and KD are very different too - KDE gives more choice as far as customizing, and I like that a lot. I have Gnome installed so I can try it every now and then when updates come, just haven't ever been impressed enough to switch.

I like KDE - but talk about bloat! (at least, on Mandrake) But it's pretty, and seems to do quite a lot.

I use Fluxbox - it uses almost no memory, is quite minimalistic, and is very customizable, on the fly. I recommend checking it out, just as something else to try. You never know, you may like it.

KDE has more right-click options and is easier to configure/customize the way I want to look.
Gnome does some things better but not enough for me to switch.

I'm currently using gnome, but not because of any strong preference.
I REALLY like enlightenment, but it was too much of a hog on my PIII 1ghz, and too easy to screw up and misconfigure. After looking at broken grey-box window borders a few times, I figured I'd wait for e17, and kick back to gnome while I wait. Whatever desktop shell/window manager combo I use MUST include the ability for a lowered window to have input focus. That's absolutely crucial to me, and THE main reason I'll never use Windows for anything serious ever again. |

last time I used gnome was on RH 6.1 - have been using KDE 3.1 on MD 9.1 lately. Looking at blitzing the *nix box and installing BeOS though, so who knows what that is going to run on there then.
