Gnome or KDE

Ello, which GUI do most of you linux users prefer. KDE or Gnome, and why? Please list pros/cons.

/Thanks/

I run redhat 9, and I used to have KDE installed, but last time I reinstalled linux, it defaulted to gnome. I think I like KDE better, but honestly don't know enough to even know why.

I think kde has more themes available, more apps that work well with it.

I don't use either, I use ICE-Experimental. Besides the lack of a desktop, it loads really fast, basically finish hitting enter, and I'm pretty much ready to go, and the con is no desktop but that doesn't bother me.
When I used KDE or Gnome, I prefered KDE as it didn't freeze on me as much as Gnome did.

KDE is working well for me on RH9. Gnome does a few things better, though, like browse smb networks.

I prefer KDE. Can't give any specific reasons really though. It just FEELS better to me and more responsive.

the philosophies behind Gnome and KD are very different too - KDE gives more choice as far as customizing, and I like that a lot.

I have Gnome installed so I can try it every now and then when updates come, just haven't ever been impressed enough to switch.

I like KDE - but talk about bloat! (at least, on Mandrake) But it's pretty, and seems to do quite a lot.

LNCPapa 07-30-2003 11:56 AM

Guess I'll join in on the KDE chime - just feels more responsive - plus I had bad experiences with Gnome+Nautilus a long time ago and I guess I was burned... :(

I use Fluxbox - it uses almost no memory, is quite minimalistic, and is very customizable, on the fly. I recommend checking it out, just as something else to try. You never know, you may like it.

KDE has more right-click options and is easier to configure/customize the way I want to look.

Gnome does some things better but not enough for me to switch.

I use gnome
I find that it has more usefull panel options.
Moreover, almost all of the pretty addons I've downloaded want me to use it.
So I do!

Wombat 07-31-2003 04:45 AM

I used to use KDE exclusively, but on my latest install I'm using Gnome.

I have no idea why. :)

Latch 07-31-2003 06:21 AM

I used to use fluxbox, on a reinstall I just went back to Gnome.. I like it more than KDE.

twister002 07-31-2003 09:52 AM

Fluxbox
is my favorite, compiled with the KDE and Gnome support.
Barring that, I like KDE better. Not sure why. I think it's the K-apps that come with it.

mathmo 07-31-2003 10:12 AM

I've been KDE since Redhat 7.2 and have never even tried Gnome. KDE works well so I'll stick with that.

-Anders 07-31-2003 11:12 AM

I would go with KDE if i had to chose between the two.
Otherwise i would prefer: matchbox, evilwm or fluxbox.

juanvaldes 07-31-2003 12:53 PM

This install I went with KDE as default.

zero2 07-31-2003 05:51 PM

KDE as well

ratbastid 07-31-2003 05:58 PM

I'm currently using gnome, but not because of any strong preference.

I REALLY like enlightenment, but it was too much of a hog on my PIII 1ghz, and too easy to screw up and misconfigure. After looking at broken grey-box window borders a few times, I figured I'd wait for e17, and kick back to gnome while I wait.

Whatever desktop shell/window manager combo I use MUST include the ability for a lowered window to have input focus. That's absolutely crucial to me, and THE main reason I'll never use Windows for anything serious ever again.

Speed_Gibson 08-01-2003 01:54 AM

last time I used gnome was on RH 6.1 - have been using KDE 3.1 on MD 9.1 lately. Looking at blitzing the *nix box and installing BeOS though, so who knows what that is going to run on there then.

bullgoose 08-01-2003 04:25 AM

I prefer XFCE; lightweight and fast, and it's pretty.
